Wicked: A Popular Culture Addiction

We’re all familiar with the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, named the most-watched motion picture by the Library of Congress. The musical Wicked, based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, is a parallel to the classic film.

Instead of following Dorothy in her quest to return to Kansas the musical tells the stories of the witches of the Land of Oz. The plot begins well before Dorothy’s arrival, when Elphaba, an outcast with green skin, and Galinda, a popular and charismatic beauty, were just two unlikely friends. Rivalry ensues between the two friends over opposing beliefs and a shared love-interest, which leads to Elphaba becoming the Wicked Witch of the West.

The musical, called “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” by the New York Times, has come a long way since its premiere on Broadway in October of 2003. It has since opened up five other North American productions, two national tours, and a number of international productions in places like Japan and Germany.

Tom McGowan Becomes The Wizard

Tony Award nominee Tom McGowan will be back on the Broadway stage once again. Praised for his work in Broadway’s original production of La Bête, McGowan will be joining the cast of Wicked beginning on Tuesday, May 3, 2011.

McGowan has previously appeared on Broadway in numerous shows including Ivanov and Chicago, as well as off Broadway shows like The Winter’s Tale and The Food Chain. Beginning this spring, he will transform as he takes on the role and becomes The Wizard in Broadway’s Wicked.

The actor will be joining a great company, and a talented cast. He will be performing along side of Katie Rose Clarke, Teal Wicks, Kathy Fitzgerald, Tom Flynn, and more.

Wicked is a unique and one of a kind musical that takes you on an enchanted adventure to the past where you find out what happened before Dorothy embarked on her adventure to Oz to see the wondeful Wizard. Wicked Welcomes New Cast Members

Despite opening seven years ago to this date, the Broadway production of Wicked is still no stranger to Select A Ticket’s Top 5 Events list. This enchanting musical is preparing to welcome two new cast members to the show on November 2, 2010. Alex Brightman and Timothy Britten Parker, the current cast members playing the roles of Boq and Dr. Dillamond, will perform their final show on Sunday, October 31.

The role of Dr. Dillamond will now be portrayed by Tom Flynn who has appeared on Broadway in plays such as How to Succeed, Tommy, and Juan Darien. He has also assumed roles in a handful traveling shows including Les Misérables.

Etai BenShlomo will also join the cast, as he takes on the role of Boq. Although he has appeared in workshops, and national tours, Wicked will be BenShlomo’s Broadway debut. This talented actor attended the University of Michigan where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Wicked is a spellbinding musical that takes audiences of all ages into the past where they find out what happened before the 1939 movie classic “The Wizard of Oz.” The story follows Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda the Good Witch before Dorothy ever dropped into their lives. The two witches meet as roommates college, and hate each other in the beginning. Eventually the witches take their own separate paths, but not before learning a great deal from each other.

The Broadway production of Wicked is standing the test of time. According to the people, it has been and is remaining to be the best and biggest Broadway musical in New York City. Seven years since opening on Broadway, Wicked still continues to break barriers. In early January the production broke the $2 million barrier in one-week. This was the third time doing so since November 2009.

Real New York Princesses Go See Wicked

I recently saw the movie Enchanted that starts out as an animated Disney spoof and ends up in real life New York City. Yes, they call the real world hell, and the characters enter it through a manhole in Times Square. And what do you think is one of the first things you see when Giselle (Amy Adams) comes up, as the camera pans the surroundings? A poster for the broadway show Wicked. I wonder if it was a product placement!

Incidentally, it’s not just Wicked posters and wicked witches in this movie – a few of the songs were written by Stephen Schwartz and Alan Menken. Schwartz wrote Wicked. Here’s another tie-in Wicked actress India Menzel (who plays Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West) plays Patrick Dempsey’s girlfriend.

Either way, see the movie. And when you’re in New York, you must see Wicked. It’s one of the Broadway tickets online you can find at Select-A-Ticket.
