NY Jets Making Coaching Changes
Thursday, January 12th, 2012Ending the season a disappointing 8-8 following two consecutive trips to the AFC Championship Game, the New York Jets have parted ways with Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, Line coach Bill Callahan and Wide Receivers coach Henry Ellard.
Replacing Schottenheimer as offensive coordinator will be recently ousted Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano. Replacements for Callahan and Ellard are expected to be forthcoming in the off season.
The offensive struggles of the Jets this season have been blamed on Schottenheimer and quarterback Mark Sanchez. Sanchez has now been in the league for three years and has not shown any improvement nor ability to lead the team despite head coach Rex Ryan’s insistence that Sanchez is a leader even to the point of having made him a captain of the team.
There have been published reports from unnamed players who are putting Sanchez down and claiming they want the Jets to pursue Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning should he become available via trade.
This is not the tight-knit team that Ryan wants in place as cowardly anonymous quotes in the New York tabloids are certainly not signs of a close team. Players like that need to be weeded out as Derrick Mason was earlier this season when reports came out he was displeased with Schottenheimer’s offense.
The Jets had two good seasons in a row and had a setback this year. Are they that far from where they were last year or was this just a brief stutter-step before regaining their position among the AFC elite?
The 2012 New York Jets season is going to be very telling in providing fans with that answer. Additional coaches will be brought in, there will be a new offense for Sanchez to learn, or will they really pursue the aging, injured Peyton Manning? Is Sanchez too young to give up on or not good enough to wait for? Big decisions need to be made to get Gang Green back on track.
It is going to be a thrilling season with lots of added drama as head coach Rex Ryan may be the next one on the chopping block if things don’t turnaround quickly for the Jets.
