NY Red Bulls Sign Rafael Marquez
Monday, August 2nd, 2010Just two days after being released by Barcelona, Rafael Marquez signed with the New York Red Bulls. Today the former captain of the Mexican national team joined Major League Soccer. Not only did he join the Red Bulls, but he also paired up with Thierry Henry, his former Barcelona teammate.
The 31-year old Mexican national league captain scored 11 goals in 94 matches with Mexico. At this year’s world cup Marquez scored against South Africa, and at the 2002 World Cup he was sent off the field after head butting USA’s Cobi Jones.
Marquez played in 242 matches with Barcelona, and scored 13 goals. He helped them to win numerous championships including four Spanish league championships, two Champion League titles, a European Supercup, and a Copa del Rey trophy.
The New York Red Bulls will have their next match on Sunday, August 8, 2010 against the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois.
