Giants Sign Top Draft Picks Last Minute

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

Training camp for the New York Giants began last Sunday, and the very night before the Giants added two new teammates to their roster. General manager Jerry Reese signed Jason Pierre-Paul, and Linval Joseph, his top two draft picks.

Pierre-Paul was the 15th overall pick in the draft held in April, and he is a rookie that will have some of the best players including Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck to show him the ropes.

Pierre-Paul went pro after his junior year of college. The 270-pound defensive end only played one season in high school and also at Fort Scott Community College and College of the Canyons in California before playing at a high-level college football team at South Florida.

Pierre-Paul’s five year $20,050,000 contract was the last of the Giants draft picks, but earlier that day they also signed Linval Joseph. Joseph is a 6’4″ defensive tackle who was selected in the second round of the draft. He was drafted from East Carolina, and the terms of his contact with the Giants have not been discloed yet.

Joseph is another rookie the Giants have added to their team, and he could perhaps be the rookie to make the biggest difference in the Giants. In the offseason workouts he was very impressive to the Giants, and they are expecting him to perform well when it counts.

The New York Giants will play their first preseason game against the New York Jets on Monday, August 16, 2010 as they both open the New Meadowlands Stadium together.

New York Giants Osi Umenyiora Will Play Through Injury

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

The New York Giants will begin training camp on Sunday, and defensive end Osi Umenyiora is expected to be on the field regardless of an injury he is suffering to his hip. Even though the injury may eventually need surgery, Umenyiora will be in Albany for training camp when it opens.

In 2006 Umenyiora suffered from a torn hip flexor, and got a second opinion regarding his injury in early July. Jerry Reese, the general manager for the Giants gave confirmation to the fact that Umenyiora was cleared to begin practicing. He also confirmed that the doctors for the Giants said Umenyiora would most likely need surgery, but practicing with the injury would not make it worse.

After consulting with the Giants, the doctors, and the general manager, Umenyiora has made the decision to begin practicing. Reese told the Daily News, ”I’m assuming that if he needs to have the surgery and wants to have the surgery that he’ll do it sometime after the season. But our plan is for Osi to be ready to go at training camp.”

The New York Giants will play their first preseason game against the New York Jets as they open the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Monday, August 16, 2010.

NY Giants Lose Hixon for 2010 Season

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Last week the New York Giants announced that they will be losing one of their most essential players for whole 2010 season.

In the middle of minicamp practices last week, the team announced that Domenik Hixon suffered from an injury to his right knee during practice the day before. Hixon, the Giants’ leading punt and kickoff returner last season, endured a torn anterior cruciate ligament after hyperextending his knee.

Team physician Russell Warren made the diagnosis, and followed the injury up with an MRI at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. It was determined that within the next two weeks the five year veteran will have surgery in order to fix the torn ligament

The Giants’ reliable wide receiver was returning a punt when the injury occurred at the New Meadowlands Stadium during the teams’ first practice ever in their new home.

Although training camp does not even begin for more than five weeks the Giants are already aware of their loss, and are looking into their other options to replace Hixon for the 2010 season. The Giants will play their first preseason game against the New York Jets as the opening game for the New Meadowlands Stadium.

New York Giants Schedule Announced

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

The New York Giants played their 273rd and final game in their old stadium against the Carolina Panthers. They were put to shame during the closing of the old Giants Stadium by losing 41-9.

The rematch is quickly approaching as the Giants will play the Panthers on September 12, 2010. Funnily enough the Panthers were the last opponent in the old stadium, and now will be the first opponent for the Giants in their new $1.7 billion stadium.

The Giants will play a total of four home games during the first six weeks of the season. You can also expect them to play four times in prime time during, which will include an intense game where Eli Manning of the Giants will play his brother’s Indianapolis Colts.

Tom Coughlin, the coach of the Giants, said that their schedule may be a little “challenging.” The Giants will play numerous games against teams that made it to the 2009 playoffs, and five of those games will not be on their own turf. New York will finish their season on the road at Minnesota, Greenbay, and then Washington all in a four-week time frame.

The New York Giants will play the inaugural game at the new Giants stadium on August 16, 2010 against the New York Jets, but their season begins against the panthers on September 12, 2010.

New York Jets and New York Giants Host New Stadium’s Opening Game

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

The New York Jets and the New York Giants will meet on August 16, 2010 as they both host the opening game at the new Meadowlands stadium. The NFL changed the original preseason schedule to allow this game to be the opening one for each of the two teams as they wished. Considering it is the The Jets’ turn to be the host in this rivalry, they will be the home team at their 42nd meeting ever in a preseason game.

Giants Stadium has been considered home to the Giants since 1976. The Jets moved in 8 years later in 1984 and became a new tenant. This new stadium will stop the Jets from feeling like a second rate team because the two teams will share a 50/50 partnership. It will be the only stadium that is shared by two teams, as was the old Giants Stadium.

The Giants and Jets flipped a coin to see who would open their regular season first. The Giants won, and will play their first regular season game on September 12. The Jets will open at the new Meadowlands stadium on the following Monday. However, in August you can experience the inaugural game between the two occupants of the new Meadowlands stadium. This is a once in a lifetime chance that you do not want to miss out on!

Osi Umenyiora and Giants At Odds

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Osi Umenyiora, defensive end of the New York Giants, did not find satisfaction with his role on the team in 2009, and on Thursday when he spoke with the media during a break in the Giant’s workout program it was made clear that he is still at odds with his team. His silence spoke a thousand words when he answered questions about his lasting knee injury, role on the team next season, competition for a starting position, and retiring or trading with, “no comment.”

Umenyiora said he wants to be truthful to the media, but if he were to be truthful it would reflect badly on the Giant’s coaching staff. He seems to be keeping his troubles to himself after last season when he publicly said some things that got him in trouble with the Giants.

After an 8-8 season, Umenyioria made it public that he was not yet guaranteed his starting job for next year by general manager Jerry Reese and coach Tom Coughlin. Since this upset Reese and Coughlin, it seems as though Umenyiora learned his lesson by keeping his mouth shut on Thursday.

During the 2008 season Osi Umenyiora did not play in any games due to a major injury during a pre-season game to his left knee. Last season he insisted that his knee did not prove to be a problem, and started in 11 games finishing with 45 tackles seven sacks, which is a team high.

Despite everything, Umenyiora expects that this will be “a very, very good season” for him with the New York Giants.

Can the Giants Take Control of the NFC East?

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

By losing the last 5 out of 6 games, the New York Giants have successfully jeopardized their playoff chances. If they can get their act together, they might be able to take control of the NFC East. New York has 3 straight NFC East games that can make or break their season.

The New York Giants started the season strong. They went 5-0 in the beginning of the season against opponents such as Washington, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, and Oakland. But the Giants have played badly for almost 2 months now, falling to teams such as New Orleans and Philadelphia. Their last victory was on October 11 in overtime against the Falcons. However, the Giants did play well in week 2 against Dallas when they won 33-31.

On Sunday, the Giants will face the Dallas Cowboys who are in first place. The Giants are currently 2 games behind the Cowboys. A loss of this game will almost certainly kill the Giants’ chances of being division champs. Next they will host the Philadelphia Eagles before traveling to Washington to play the Redskins.

The 6-5 Giants are up against some tough competition. They need to beat the 8-3 Cowboys, 7-4 Eagles, and the 3-7 Redskins. Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys is the time to start.

New York Giants Defeat the Falcons in Overtime

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

On Sunday afternoon, the New York Giants were able to defeat the Atlanta Falcons in overtime 34-31. A great game by quarterback Eli Manning led to the Giants’ first win since October 11.

Manning had some of his best throws of the year to receiversMario Manningham and Steve Smith. He completed 25 of 39 passes for 384 yards. This was his career high and his first 300 yard game at home ever. He threw 3 touchdown passes and 1 interception.

The New York Giants had a 14-point lead in the final 6 minutes of the 4th quarter, but they blew it by allowing a touchdown drive by the Falcons in the final drive of the game.

This drive lasted for 12 plays, 76 yards and ended with an 11-yard touchdown pass with under 30 seconds left of the game which made the score even at 31-31. This was the second time in two games the defense allowed this to happen.

The game ended with a 29-yard pass from Eli Manning to Mario Manningham which set up a game-winning 36-yard field goal from Lawrence Tynes.

The New York Giants will play their next game in Denver against the Broncos on Thanksgiving day, Thursday, November 26.

New York Giants fall to New Orleans Saints

Monday, October 19th, 2009

In week 6 of the NFL regular season, the previously unbeaten New York Giants were not able to maintain their perfect start to the season after Sunday’s game against the undefeated New Orleans Saints.

The Giants arrived with the meanest defense in the NFL and a 5-0 record. They left with 48 points on them and their first loss of the year. The Saints crushed the giants 48-27, and ruined Eli Manning’s homecoming.

For Eli Manning, it was his first game in the Louisiana Superdome, but it wasn’t exactly the start he was looking for. He was 14 of 31 for 178 yards. In the second quarter he was able to connect with Mario Manningham for a 15-yard score, but he overthrew a deep pass to Steve Smith that could have been a touchdown. In the fourth quarter, after the game was out of reach, Manning was replaced by David Carr.

New Orleans quarterback, Drew Brees was able to throw 369 yards and 4 touchdowns against the Giants, the team that is the NFL’s top-rated pass defense. With 7 touchdowns, the Saints scored the most points on the Giants in 10 years.

The New York Giants hope to redeem themselves with their next game against the Arizona Cardinals on October 25.

Eli Manning Injured

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

The undefeated New York Giants will return home on Sunday, October 11 against the Oakland Raiders after winning 3 games on the road. The real question is… will Eli Manning be with them when they do?

The 4-0 New York Giants had another easy win on Sunday over the 0-4 Kansas City Chiefs but it was overshadowed by Manning’s injury during the game. It was a non-contact injury that occurred with about 13 minutes left in the game when he attempted to throw a pass to Giants receiver, Steve Smith. As he planted his foot he hopped a little, stepped to throw, and after he released the ball he immediately dropped to the ground.

After the injury, Manning did stay in for one more play which was a short pass to Hakeem Nicks who was successfully able to turn that short pass into a 54-yard touchdown. At that point, the Giants were up 27-3 so the coaches pulled him from the game and the trainers began taping his foot.

Manning said he did not think that the injury was “awful,” and initially was not intending on missing Sunday’s game against the Raiders, but he said he would refrain from playing if he couldn’t play adequately or if it could make the injury worse. Also, Giants Coach Tom Coughlin made it known that they are being cautious with the injury.

The New York Jets Two Point Victory Over the New York Giants

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

Saturday night’s preseason game between the New York Jets and the New York Giants was a close one. Rookie quarterback, Mark Sanchez, guided the way for the New York Jets’ 27-25 victory over the New York Giants.

This was Mark Sanchez’s first game since the big decision on Wednesday. Although Sanchez has improved over his last game, it’s hard to say if the decision was a good one or not considering this was only a preseason game. Sanchez completed 10 of 16 passes in the first half for a touchdown and over 115 yards, justifying Coach Ryan’s instincts. It will be exciting to see if the Jets’ head coach, Rex Ryan, made the right choice when the season starts on September 13.

As Sanchez could not have been much more on point, Eli Manning had a tough time with his receivers. Out of twenty-one attempts, he only made nine completions. However, it was not only Mannings fault! The receivers were not always where they needed to be. Also, when Manning through a pass for 60 yards down the middle second year receiver, Steve Smith, dropped the perfectly thrown pass.
