New York Giants Tops in NFC East

Friday, November 18th, 2011

As week 11 in the 2011-2012 NFL is now underway following Thursday night’s 17-13 Broncos victory over the Jets, the other New York team is looking to put more distance between themselves and the other teams in their division.

The New York Giants are currently sitting atop the NFC East standings with a record of 6 wins and 3 losses. The Dallas Cowboys are in second place with a record of 5-4 and the division is rounded out by Philadelphia and Washington with identical 3-6 records.

The Giants host the Eagles Sunday night at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. Earlier this season, in week 3, the New York Giants defeated the Philadelphia Eagles by a score of 29-16.

Earlier in the day, the Cowboys visit the Washington Redskins. The Cowboys are also looking to add some separation from the pack in the NFC East and turn it into a twp-team race against the Giants.

Philadelphia and Washington are in desperate need of putting together significant winning streaks to save their respective seasons.

The Eagles may be without starting quarterback Michael Vick who suffered broken ribs in last week’s game. The Eagles are being coy up to this about in terms of revealing his availability but reports indicate that practices this week featured backups Vince Young and Mike Kafka preparing for the Giants. It is still unclear which player will get the start but with their season all but on the line, entering this final stretch with a backup as your starter cannot be a great feeling for the Eagles and their fans.

Sunday night’s matchup will be a major influencing factor on the NFC East standings. The Giants need to hold server with Dallas to maintain their lead. If Dallas wins in the afternoon, the Giants need to win at night to maintain their current lead.

There are still some good New York Giants tickets available for Sunday’s game and every home game for the rest of the season.

Giants Win Home Opener

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Mother Monster, Lady Gaga, was spotted enjoying the New York Giants crush the St. Louis Rams on Monday at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. Gaga showed love for her team by rocking a Giants hat mismatched with a classy dress, and poured out a glass of champagne during the fourth quarter in honor of their 28-16 victory.

Monday night’s win was exactly what the Giants needed, especially after a poor performance and disappointing loss in their season opener against the Washington Redskins. Two of New York’s touchdowns were completed passes by Eli Manning. Manning slipped away with one interception while completing 18 of 29 passes for 200 yards.

The final Giants’ touchdown spawned from a crucial mistake by the Rams. The Rams opened the gate to New York’s victory by playing carelessly and fumbling the ball. Michael Boley took full advantage of this mistake, and scored an essential touchdown on a 65-yard fumble return.

The Giants are entering the NFL’s third week where they will compete against Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles. The New York Giants will play their next game against the Eagles at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday, September 25.

NY Giants Tickets on Sale as Lockout End Draws Near

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

It seems as though the NFL’s four-month lockout will be coming to an end very quickly. Although the deal has not officially been done, the owners and players of the NFL are moving towards ending the lockout any day now.

On Tuesday a settlement draft was finalized in order to be presented to the players and owners on Wednesday. The legal teams worked diligently in order for the document to be able to be under review, and possibly approved. The deal will first be presented to a group of 13 men called the NFL Players Association executive committee, as well as the NFL labor committee and its 10 man backing.

The goal of Wednesday’s review is ultimately for the group to seek a deal approval from the NFL players. The agreement set forth would need a majority vote from close to 2,000 players in the National Football League.

Will the current deal in the works be sufficient enough to end the four month NFL lockout?

If so, the New York Giants will play their first preseason game  against the Carolina Panthers on August 13, 2011 at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC.

Giants Playoff Chances Update

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

Two weeks ago, the New York Giants lost the opportunity to set themselves up to be the winners of the NFC East. On December 19, New York was leading by 21-points in the fourth-quarter, but ended up losing 38-31 to the Philadelphia Eagles during the very last seconds of the game.

Unfortunately for the Giants, they were unable to pull it together in order to recover from that devastating loss. Instead, they lost their game in Green Bay on Sunday against the packers by a huge margin. In New York’s 45-17 loss they played extremely lousy, and allowed a season-high of 515 yards. Becacuse of this loss, the Giants were unable to secure a wild-card slot.

If the Giants want to reach the postseason, they will first have to defeat the Washington Redskins. In their last five games against the Redskins, New York has won all five. A sixth straight will not guarantee them into the playoffs, as the Giants also need the Chicago Bears to beat the Green Bay Packers if they want to make a playoff appearance this season.

The New York Giants are headed to Washington where they will face the Redskins on Sunday, January 2, 2010.

NY Giants Look to Make the Playoffs

Friday, December 24th, 2010

It’s that time of year. Week 16 of the regular NFL season has begun, and the New York Giants are on a mission. On Sunday the Giants will face the Green Bay Packers, as both teams fight for that Wild Card spot that will guarantee them a spot in the playoffs.

Although the Giants are looking to secure a win on Sunday to ensure their Wild Card spot, they could still win the NFC East. The 9-5 Giants are currently second in the NFC East only to the Eagles. If the Giants win their last two games and the Eagles lose their last two, then the Giants will successfully control the NFC East.

Worst case scenario: the Giants do not make the playoffs. This could happen if the Packers are victorious this week, and also beat the Bears during their last game in Chicago. If the Packers lose to Chicago, and the Giants beat the Washington Redskins, then the Giants are in luck.

Although New York is still picking up the pieces from last week’s devastating and surprising loss to the Eagles, they will need to shake those bitter memories off in order to make this win happen.

The New York Giants will play their next game in Green Bay, Wisconsin against the Packers on Sunday, December 26, 2010.

NY Giants WR Steve Smith Injured

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Over the past month the New York Giants have had many injured players, which has caused them a few problems along the way. A partially torn pectoral muscle has left wide receiver Steve Smith out of four games. He returned to the game in Monday night’s 21-3 win over the Minnesota Vikings, only to leave the game facing another injury.

The injury was to cartilage in his knee, and will require surgery along with a lengthy rehabilitation period. The season ending knee injury occurred during the fourth quarter of Monday’s game. The injury could possibly even set back his return to training for the 2011-2012 season.

The bad luck surrounding the Giants’ receivers this season has been less than favorable. Now the Giants will have to face their division rivals on Sunday. Since both teams are tied in the NFC east with 9 wins and 4 losses each, this game will be a fight for the top spot.

As far as losing Smith goes, the Giants will have to work with what they have. The top receivers Eli Manning will be looking for now include Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks, although they are both struggling with injuries as well. Manningham left Monday’s game with a hip injury, and Nicks just returned but admitted to feeling sore after Monday night. Manning will also be looking to Derek Hagan, Devin Thomas, and Michael Clayton to make some amazing receptions against Philadelphia.

The New York Giants will host their next game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, December 19, 2010.

NY Giants Offensive Line Still Strong Despite Injuries

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Numerous injuries on the New York Giants over the past month have caused the team to make a few changes to their offensive line. On Sunday the Giants proved that this has not negatively affected them with their 31-7 win over the Washington Redskins.

Quarterback Eli Manning has shown great strength even with the loss of the injured offensive players, as he has not been sacked in last five games. In Sunday’s game against the Redskins, Manning threw 48 passes without taking a single sack. With only 12 this season, he has the fewest sacks in the league.

Offensive lineman David Diehl and wide receiver Steve Smith are both practicing this week. Head coach Tom Coughlin said that he is anticipating their return on Sunday against the Vikings.

Smith has been out for four games in a row. Last week, his strained pectoral muscle enabled him only to do limited work such as catching passes. Although he knows that his injury will limit him for the rest of the season, he is hoping to play against Minnesota this Sunday.

Coughlin is unsure of the status of wide receiver Hakeem Nicks. After being treated for compartment syndrome two weeks ago, it is still unknown when he will be cleared to return to practice.

The New York Giants will travel to Minnesota to play their next game against the Vikings on Sunday, December 12.

NY Giants Attempt to Fill Receiver Void

Saturday, November 27th, 2010

A little over two weeks ago, the New York Giants were coming off of five straight wins, and worked their way to the top of the NFC East with a 6-2 record. Now, with all three of the receivers who helped get them to that point sidelined for injuries, the team must find ways to fill this void.

Hakeem Nicks took the latest blow on Monday when he was treated for compartment syndrome. The injury occurred in his lower right leg, and is a condition where swelling compresses nerves and blood vessels. According to Giants’ coach Tom Coughlin, the treatment on Monday afternoon included a fasciotomy to relieve the tension and pressure.

Steve Smith is a receiver that Nicks will be joining on the injury report. The Giants second-leading receiver is expected to at least miss Sunday’s game, and it will remain in question if he will be able to play on December 5th when the Giants face the Redskins. With a partially torn pectoral muscle Smith will have limits as to what he can do even if when he returns to the game.

Combined, Nicks and Smith have been a major powerhouse with 98 catches, 1,170 yards, and 12 touchdowns. The Giants will have to rely on Mario Manningham and Derek Hagan to make up for their loss.

The New York Giants will host their next game at the New Meadowlands Stadium against the Jaguars on Sunday, November 28, 2010.

Osi Umenyiora Earns NFC Defensive Player of October

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Osi Umenyiora, defensive end for the New York Giants had an amazing October.

Within the Giants’ four October victories, he had 18 tackles (10 of which were solo) six forced fumbles, and seven sacks. His efforts did not go unnoticed, and earned him the NFC Defensive Player of the month. Since October 2001 when Michael Strahan earned the title (and broke the sack record), Umenyiora is the first Giants’ defender to achieve this honor.

Last year Umenyiora ended the season thinking his time with the New York Giants could possibly be done with. After complaining about the way he was used during the season by defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan, Umenyiora was not coach Tom Coughlin or GM Jerry Reese’s favorite person.

After suggesting that Osi could perhaps be better off somewhere else at the end of last season, coach Tom Coughlin thought the award given to the 28 year old for his outstanding performance in October was “well-earned.”

The New York Giants will travel to Qwest Field in Seattle to face the Seahawks on Sunday, November 7, 2010.

Solid Offense and Defense Lead Giants to Victory

Monday, October 11th, 2010

On Sunday the New York Giants produced their second win in a row. Last weekend they beat the Chicago Cubs 17-3, and this weekend they beat the Houston Texans 34-10. The Giants had a solid offense and defense, and looked like a completely well rounded team.

Together Hakeem Nicks and Eli Manning were basically unstoppable. Two out of Manning’s three touchdown passes were completed to Nicks, who finished the game with career highs of 130 yards and 12 catches. Manning’s final touchdown pass occurred in the fourth quarter, and was thrown to Steve Smith. He finished the game completing 27 of 42 passes and threw for 297 yards.

A lot must be said for the Giants’ defense on Sunday as well. New York held Houston to a franchise low of 24 yards rushing. The Texans entered Sundays game leading the NFL with 172 yards rushing, and this seasons leading rusher, Arian Foster. The Giants were able to hold foster to just 25 yards on 11 carries.

Linebacker Brian Cushing made a great first impression on during his season debut by making four solo tackles. Defensive end Osi Umenyiora did not make it easy on Texans quarterback Matt Shaub, forcing two sacks on him.

The New York Giants will play their next game at the New Meadowlands Stadium on Sunday, October 17, 2010.

Giants Show Lack of Discipline in 29-10 Loss to Tennessee Titans

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

Earlier today the New York Giants had a disappointing performance in their 29-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans. The Giants incurred a multitude of turnovers and penalties, which proved they are lacking discipline.

The Giants could have guessed that the game was not going to go in their favor when their first turnover of the game happened during the very first drive. Quarterback Eli Manning threw a pass intended for Hakeem Nicks. Nicks attempted to catch the ball, but the Titans’ Cortland Finnegan nailed him from behind. The ball flew into the air and Sen’Derrick Marks of the Titans recorded his first interception as he caught the ball just before it hit the ground.

Before the game was over Eli Manning through another interception, and Ahmad Bradshaw fumbled the ball inside the Titans’ 10-yard line.

There were five personal fouls called against the Giants that severely hindered the team from succeeding. Brandon Jacobs, David Diehl, and Antrel Roelle all had one personal foul penaly each, while Kareem McKenzie had two.

The penalties and turnovers from this game were detrimental for the Giants, but hopefully next time the team will be able to show more discipline and land a victory. The New York Giants will play their next game at the New Meadowlands Stadium against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, October 3.

Giants Seek Revenge in Stadium Opener

Friday, September 10th, 2010

It may be a new season for the New York Giants, but what happened at the end of their last season still sticks in the players’ heads. The pain from their ugly loss to the Carolina Panthers in the Giants Stadium closer last December still lingers with the Giants.

On that Sunday in December the Giants played their final game in Giants Stadium, and took a horrible 41-9 beating while in the process. When the NFL schedule was released, and the Giants saw that they would be playing Carolina in the new stadium opener, we can assume they were prepared to get pumped up.

Left tackle David Diehl said, “The only way to take care of those memories is to take care of things now. We have to take care of the present. We’re ready to do that.”

Hopefully the Giants can turn the pain from that day into something useful in order to successfully attain the revenge they are seeking during the season opener against the Panthers.

The regular season will begin for the New York Giants on Sunday September 21, 2010 when they face the Carolina Panthers at the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

New York Giants Need Work Before Start of Regular Season

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

During the New York Giants’ third preseason game, coach Tom Coughlin realized the amount of work needed to be done before the start of the regular season. Last Saturday’s game was not the Giants’ best as they lost 24-10 to the Baltimore Ravens.

Although Coughlin mentioned that “some people played well and played hard,” he made it clear that he felt like some of the most important players on the team did not show up the way he expected them to.  He said that the next couple of days are really important for the Giants, and that he needs “to see a lot out of” the players within the coming days.

The players who did notably well in the game definitely stood out. Corey Webster, a cornerback for the Giants, made an interception and also broke up three passes. Defensive tackle Rocky Bernard who was filling in for an injured Chris Canty had two sacks, along with defensive end Justin Tuck. As for the other players, let’s just hope they can shape up in time for the 2010-2011 regular season.

The New York Giants will play their first regular season game, which will also be the first regular season game ever to be played at the New Meadowlands Stadium, against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, September 12, 2010.

Giants Open New Stadium Without Eli Manning

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Saturday night was the first preseason home game for the New York Giants at New Meadowlands Stadium.  Unfortunately for the Giants, their star quarterback, along with several other players were unable to remain healthy enough to experience this monumental event on the field.

Eli Manning watched on the sideline as their third string quarterback Rhett Bomar got his first taste of NFL football in a 24-17 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was able to complete 13-of 26 passes for 167 yards, proving that his passing game could use some improvement. Luckily for the Giants, Manning – injured in the Jets games the previous week – had the 12 stitches in his forehead removed, and should be ready to return to practice this week.

Along with Manning, the team was also missing two of it starting guards, Chris Snee and Rich Seubert. Unfortunately there was also a surprise player added to the injury report. Brandon Jacobs suffered from a stiff neck after lifting weights, which lead him to sit this game out as well.

The New York Giants opened the New Meadowlands Stadium last week “on the road” against the Jets, and will now travel to Baltimore to battle it out against the Ravens on Saturday, August 28, 2010 for their next preseason game.

NY Giants TE Kevin Boss Hindered by Injuries

Friday, August 13th, 2010

The New York Giants currently have four tight ends who are unable to participate in training camp due to injuries. One of those tight ends is starter Kevin Boss, a player who never seems to be able to remain healthy for an entire season.

All last season Boss experienced pain in his right ankle, and even had to undergo surgery. Once he was recovering from his ankle surgery, he thought everything was going to be all good.

Unfortunately for the 26-year-old, that was not the case. He endured two helmet-to-helmet hits that were pretty brutal, and back in January he needed surgery on his pinkie finger.

After the surgery on his ankle in May, he was only out for four to six weeks. However after returning to practice he overcompensated  for his ankle that was still recovering, and felt his hamstring pull. Boss is no longer practicing, and he definitely is “frustrated” about it.

Boss said, “They’re trying to be real conservative about it and tell me they need me for the season, not for practice.” He did mention that it is improving, and that he is trying not to make it any worse.

The New York Giants will be opening the New Meadowlands Stadium, along with their co-tenant the New York Jets on Monday, August 16, 2010 as their first pre-season game.
