The 2013 NHL Winter Classic is officially to be held at Michigan Stadium (The Big House) in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Scheduled for January 1, 2013, this will not only be the biggest Winter Classic event yet it will be the biggest NHL game in history.

The Big House hosted over 104,000 fans for the Michigan vs Michigan State “The Big Chill” game and now for the Winter Classic the projected crowd is 115,000 which would set a new single-game attendance record for the NHL.

Featuring the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs in a classic Original Six matchup, the Winter Classic is going to be a great one in 2013. For the first time a Canadian team is involved and anybody who knows hockey knows the Maple Leafs fans are truly FANATICAL about their team and will surely come out in droves to attend the Winter Classic. Detroit, the self-proclaimed “Hockeytown”, has generations of dedicated fans themselves so this is going to be one raucous crowd of over 100,000 die-hard hockey fans cheering their respective teams on.

Who can forget the thrilling finish to the 2012 NHL Winter Classic where the New York Rangers traveled to Philadephia and overcame a 2-0 deficit to win the game 3-2. It took a defiant save by goaltender Henrik Lundqvist on a Daniel Briere penalty shot in the closing seconds to seal the deal in what was a dramatic finish to a thrilling contest.

Be a part of this historic game and experience hockey like you never have before – outdoors like it started way back when. Find 2013 NHL Winter Classic tickets today and witness this epic battle between the Red Wings and Maple Leafs.

The National Hockey League’s fifth annual Winter Classic game will be played in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Philadelphia Flyers will square off against their long-time Atlantic Division rivals, the New York Rangers on Monday, January 2, 2012.

An alumni game between former Flyers and Rangers players is scheduled for December 31st. The game will be broadcast live by Versus.

The Rangers shut out the Flyers yesterday when the two franchises met for the first time this season. This win was New York’s sixth straight victory at home. This is their best Madison Square Garden start in nearly 20 years.

The scoreless first period featured a bout at center ice 4 seconds into the game between New York’s Brandon Prust and Philadelphia’s Zac Rinaldo.

”It’s been a long time coming and we’ve been waiting for it. The game was a little more in the spotlight and everyone is looking forward to this Winter Classic,” said Prust, referring to the outdoor game at Citizens Bank Ballpark in Philadelphia. ”It always feels a little more like a playoff atmosphere with Philadelphia.”

Rangers’ rookie Carl Hagelin, playing in his second NHL game, netted his first career goal 5 minutes into the third period.

”I’m just going out and playing my game,” Hagelin said. ”The puck bounced out to me and I just whacked it in.” It was the Rangers’ third-straight win against the Flyers, dating back to last season, outscoring Philadelphia 12-2 in those contests. This was only the third loss this season for the Flyers on the road. The Rangers will also host the Flyers at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 23, a little over a week before the Winter Classic.

Last week, 2012 Winter Classic Tickets were the hottest tickets on SelectATicket.com. Rightfully so, as the Winter Classic has become a January tradition for the National Hockey League. The tradition also entails taking the game to its outdoor roots, this time in Pennsylvania for the second year in a row.

Last year’s Winter Classic held on New Year’s Day was at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field and featured the Pittsburgh Penguins against the Buffalo Sabres. This year Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park will host a cut throat hockey game between the New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday, January 2, 2012.

This year’s Classic will be reigniting a fierce rivalry within the Atlantic Division. The Rangers and Flyers will meet twice during the regular season, both in New York City, before duking it out on January 2 in Philadelphia.

The Rangers may feel as though they have much more to prove, given the recent history between the two teams. Back in 2010 the Flyers made it to the playoffs by the skin of their teeth, which can be attributed to their huge win over the Rangers on the last day of the regular season.

The 2012 NHL Winter Classic featuring the New York Rangers against the Philadelphia Flyers will be held on Monday, January 2 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, PA.

On New Years Day, rainy circumstances forced a delay on the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals at the 2011 NHL Winter Classic. Since the game was outdoors, the NHL decided to change the start time to 8pm due to weather conditions. Rain continued to pour, but that did not stop the Washington Capitals from snagging a 3-1 win.

Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field was transformed from a football field into a wintery outdoor ice haven in under a week. The NHL’s 4th annual classic held on New Years Day 2011 was an exciting event, and next year’s will not disappoint either.

Fans of the NHL already have their suspicions regarding who will play in the 2012 Winter Classic. Many believe that the New York Rangers will be featured at the New Meadowlands Stadium, or at Citi Field in New York. Many followers of the NHL believe that since the Rangers are an Original Six team, and are located in the largest media market of the United States, then they will be featured in an upcoming Winter Classic. Fans are also speculating that possible opponents include the Tampa Bay Lightning or the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Earlier tonight when the Pittsburgh Steelers home game ended, Heinz Field was put completely in the hands of the NHL’s Facilities Operations Manager. Dan Craig said he’s been ready to begin transforming the football field into an outdoor hockey paradise since Tuesday.

Craig arrived in Pittsburgh on Monday night where he immediately began to plan the rink’s construction for the NHL Winter Classic. This is not an easy feat, as he is facing a noon December 30 deadline in order for the Capitals to face the Penguins in this year’s Classic.

Although Craig spent Sunday watching the Steelers’s game on television to study the wind patterns at Heinz Field, and planned the entire construction, actual work is not set to commence until Christmas Day. Craig said, “We’re hoping that all things considered, Mother Nature will be good to us and we will be making ice by 9 p.m. on Christmas night, and we’ll be building ice from that point on.”

This year’s Winter Classic will feature an intense face off between Alex Ovechkin of the Capitals and Sidney Crosby of the Penguins. Both players are looking to lead their respective team in the Classic, an even that Forbes magazine called “the best new sporting event” of the last ten years.

The NHL Winter Classic is an exciting outdoor game that has become a must-see for all hockey fans. This year will mark the exciting fourth annual Winter Classic featuring the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals at Heinz Field.

New this year, HBO’s “24/7″ will give audiences a behind the scenes look at what goes on with the Penguins and Capitals. Episodes three and four of “24/7 Penguins-Capitals: Road to the NHL Winter Classic” will give fans a sneak peak into the hockey club and the players.

Filming will commence as soon as Heinz Field begins the transformation from a football field to an NHL skating rink. A 12-man crew led by NHL Facilities Operations Manager Dan Craig will transform Heinz Field into a winter wonderland as they build a game-ready ice rink on top of the field. Along with the building of the ice rink, the crew is also responsible for making the surrounding area all things hockey as well.
