Center Erik Christensen has been unable to consistently crack the New York Rangers lineup over the past two seasons. As a result and somewhat of a reward for being a good soldier, the New York Rangers have traded Christensen to the Minnesota Wild along with a 7th Round Pick in exchange for minor league forward Casey Wellman.

The deal not only lightens up a log-jam at forward for New York, it also removes Christensen’s salary from their cap hit and frees up a spot for defenseman Steve Eminger who is just about ready to come off the Injured Reserve List.

New York Rangers head coach told the New York Daily News there are no hard feelings and he wishes Christensen well in the future with Minnesota:

“He gets another opportunity. For us to get to the roster, we wanted to get some other people in. He had some opportunities here, great guy… I wish the best to him, but we need to move by that right now and look at other things.”

Wellman has seen action in 27 NHL games over the past two years with the Wild but has also been unable to solidify a spot in the lineup. In those 27 games played he has recorded 2 goals and 4 assists to go along with 4 penalty minutes.

He is the son of former San Francisco Giants infielder Brad Wellman.

The New York Rangers are currently in first place in the NHL’s Eastern Conference with a total of 69 points in 49 games. Their next game is Sunday versus the Philadelphia Flyers at Madison Square Garden. The Flyers are hot on the Rangers’ tail with 66 points so Sunday’s game will be a battle just like it always is between these bitter rivals. The Rangers have defeated the Flyers by scores of 2-0, 4-2 and of course 3-2 in the NHL Winter Classic.

Two rivals will meet for the first game after the All-Star break when the New Jersey Devils host the New York Rangers tonight at the Prudential Center. Tonight’s matchup is the second of six meetings this season. The rivals will meet five times in the next six weeks.

With 66 points, the Rangers head into tonight just one point behind Detroit for the most in the NHL. They have a three point lead over the Philadelphia Flyers for the lead in the Atlantic Division.

The Devils are currently locked in a three-way tie with the Florida Panthers and the Toronto Maple Leafs for the final two playoff spots in the East. They have also lost their last three games. The Devils also lost their first bout with the Rangers this season, 4-1, at the Prudential Center on Dec. 20

Marian Gaborik is returning from the All-Star game on a hot streak after being named MVP and scoring a hat trick, the 16th in All-Star Game history. Two of the three goals were against Rangers’ goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.

“I was just fortunate to be lucky against him,” Gaborik said. “I think he’s one of the best, if not the best, goalie in the league, but I am glad I could get a couple of goals against him.”

Gaborik is the fifth Ranger to claim All-Star MVP honors. He is also leading the New York Rangers with 25 goals.

Find New Jersey Devils tickets for this and all home games at Newark’s Prudential Center.

The NHL Board of Governors revealed a plan to do away with the current 15-team Eastern and Western conferences and their three sub-divisions. Their plan is to now have four conferences.

This new alignment does have its benefits. It will increase regional rivalries and competition for playoff spots, in addition to decreasing travel time for teams out West. The alignment will also guarantee home-and-home series among all teams.

The new look conferences, which have yet to be named, are as follows:

New Jersey Devils, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes

Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, Buffalo Sabres, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning

Detroit Red Wings, Columbus Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators, St. Louis Blues, Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild, Dallas Stars, Winnipeg Jets.

Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Phoenix Coyotes, San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche.

Based on statistics, the Rangers, Devils and Islanders are set to do battle in the most difficult of the four new conferences. Since the 2004-05 season, the teams in this new conference have combined to send 27 teams to the playoffs. This is the highest percentage out of all the new conferences. These same teams have also averaged 92.2 points in the standings over that same time period as well, another best out of the new conferences.

With this new alignment, only four out of the seven teams in the conference the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers are in will make the playoffs. This will make the intra-conference rivalries even more intense than they already are!

Find New Jersey Devils tickets and New York Rangers tickets online and enjoy the fastest game in town.

Following last night’s victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, the New York Rangers are on fire with 3 consecutive victories and 7 in a row on home ice. The Rangers appear to finally be putting it all together at Madison Square Garden, fans will recall that over the past several years the Rangers have had a rough go of it at MSG but this season they have so far been able to own their building. The Garden Faithful have been rocking this season, too!

Only three points behind Pittsburgh for first place in the Eastern Conference and with 4 games in hand on the Penguins, it cannot be stressed enough just how important it was for the Rangers to win last night’s game. Storming out to a 4-1 lead in the second period on goals by Marian Gaborik, John Mitchell, Brad Richards and Ryan Callahan, the Rangers surrendered a late 2nd period goal to the Pens and held on for their lives in the 3rd period to squeeze out the regulation time victory. Points in the standings are important no matter what time of year it is as the conference is tight and every season the playoff spots aren’t decided until the final games of the year. It would be nice for a change to see the NY Rangers head into the last month of the season with some breathing room instead of fighting tooth and nail just to reach the playoffs.

The NHL season is already 25% complete and the Rangers are looking to continue their strong play into the next 21 games. They are among the stingiest defenses in the league so far and all of this has been done without All-Star shutdown defenseman Marc Staal in the lineup. Staal has yet to play a game this season as he deals with post-concussion symptoms but a positive sign was revealed this week as he has started light skating at the Rangers practice facility. If the Rangers can add their all-star defenseman to the already formidable current lineup, it can be nothing but a huge bonus for the team.

Be among the most passionate fans in hockey, see the Rangers dominate on home ice at historic Madison Square Garden by ordering New York Rangers tickets today!

The New York Rangers extended their winning streak to 5 on Wednesday night with a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators. This fifth straight win for the Rangers was also the fourth loss in a row for Ottawa. Extending his point streak to 4 games, Marian Gaborik scored twice. Derek Stepan had a goal and two assists. The Rangers’ top line of Artem Anisimov, Derek Stepan and Marian Gaborik combined for all seven of the Rangers’ points.

“I think we feel pretty good out there,” Gaborik said. “Arty and Step are playing with a lot of confidence. We scored a couple of goals off great forechecks by those guys. Hopefully we can keep it up.”

The Rangers were outshot by Ottawa, 31-19. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 29 shots for New York (8-3-3), which hit the road for the first time since a 4-1-1 homestand. This was Lundqvist’s fifth win of the season. The Rangers haven’t lost since Oct. 29 when Ottawa rallied from a third period three-goal deficit and won 5-4 in a shootout.

Daniel Alfredsson, the Senators captain, missed his fifth straight game because of a concussion. Alfredsson was injured on a hit to the head by Rangers forward Wojtek Wolski when the teams previously met. The hit drew a minor penalty for Wolski but no supplemental discipline.

Sean Avery had his first fight of the season when gloves were dropped in the first period against Zenon Konopka, a former Islander. Konopka leads the league with 59 penalty minutes.

After demoting super pest Sean Avery to the minors during a pre-season trip to Europe, the New York Rangers have recalled the agitator from the AHL Connecticut Whale.

Being a veteran, Avery had to pass through re-entry waivers. While there was slight concern the rival New York Islanders might put in a claim just for PR purposes, Avery cleared through all the other teams in the league and is back on the New York Rangers’ roster. Avery is not expected to be in the lineup tonight when the Rangers faceoff against the Anaheim Ducks as head coach John Tortorella understandably wants to stick with a winning lineup. The Rangers convincingly defeated the San Jose Sharks 5-2 on Monday.

Avery may return to the lineup Saturday night at Madison Square Garden versus Original Six rivals the Montreal Canadiens. The New York Rangers fans are largely split on their opinion of Avery.

There are fans who believe he is overrated and a distraction, having scored only 3 goals last year and spending a large amount of his time in the penalty box. Other fans see him for the galvanizing force that he can be at times, playing his rambunctious style to liven the crowd and inspire his team.

Either way, you can bet that Sean Avery’s return to MSG will not be uneventful!

New York Rangers tickets are an interesting item this year for fans of the Broadway Blueshirts as Madison Square Garden is in the midst of a renovation.

The seating has changed, the lockerrooms and the concessions and bathrooms have all undergone a makeover.

So if you love the New York Rangers or just seeing hockey in general, snag yourself some New York Rangers tickets!

Following a seven game road trip to open the season which took them from Sweden to Long Island to western Canada and finally back to Manhattan, the New York Rangers had their first home game at Madison Square Garden last night. Undergoing major renovations for the next few years, Phase I of the Madison Square Garden makeover is complete and ready to host the Broadway Blueshirts for the 2011-2012 season.

While the homecoming was a disappointing 4-2 loss to fellow Original Six team the Toronto Maple Leafs, the NY Rangers are glad to be off the road and back in New York. Their next home game is tomorrow afternoon, a 3pm start versus the Ottawa Senators. Surely a bid road-weary, the Rangers hope to put the loss to Toronto behind them and get back on the winning side of the ledger.

Star goaltender Henrik Lundqvist has been strong in the early goings this season and sniper Marian Gaborik has been the best forward on the team. All Star defenseman Marc Staal is out with post-concussion symptoms and cannot be counted on returning to the lineup anytime soon. In his absence, Dan Girardi has stepped up his game to hold down the blueline but he cannot do it alone. If Staal is going to be out much longer, the Rangers are going to have to look to make a trade for a top 4 defenseman to take his place in the lineup.

Aside from Gaborik, newly acquired center Brad Richards has played well and team captain Ryan Callahan has been his usual physical self. Brandon Prust and Brian Boyle continue their strong play from last season and Ruslan Fedotenko has done everything the team has asked of him and performed well. The rest of the top six forwards need to pick up the scoring however if the Rangers are going to have a shot at going anywhere this season. They need their top two lines to be offensive threats and the power play must be better than last season.

With Ludqvist in goal, a healthy Gaborik and a productive Richards, this team has the potential to go places and fans at Madison Square Garden know it. Among the most passionate fans in hockey, New York Rangers fans do not let the team take a night off. The atmosphere at the revamped Garden is going to be electric as fans sense this team is ready to take the next step into the upper echelon of NHL clubs.

Be among the frenzied crowd at MSG this year and find New York Rangers tickets today.

The New York Rangers could be in bad shape for awhile, as their center Chris Drury is dealing with an injury that may leave him sidelined for quite some time. The injury occurred during a scrimmage game that was held over the weekend. Drury blocked a shot, but unfortunately broke his left index finger while in the process.

Drury is expected to be out for up to a month which will leave him sidelined for the entire preseason, along with the first couple game in the regular season. Without Drury playing center, this leaves a spot on the ice open for the taking.

This could mean one of two things. The first being that Brian Boyle, Tim Kennedy, Derek Stepan, and Todd White will all be fighting for his spot during the preseason games, or that head coach John Tortorella will move left wing Vaclav Prospal to center, creating a spot for Sean Avery on the left.

Hopefully the Rangers will be able to succeed in the preseason, despite the loss of Drury. The New York Rangers will play their first preseason game at Madison Square Garden against the New Jersey Devils on Thursday, September 23.

Last week at the Staples Center in Los Angeles a “dream come true” occurred for the first-round pick of the New York Rangers. Dylan McIlrath was drafted to the Rangers, who even at 18 years old understands the history of the Rangers and their home at Madison Square Garden.

McIlrath, along with the rest of the Rangers’ 2010 draft class took the opportunity to tour Madison Square Garden, and even preview what the new Garden will look like after the renovations take place over the next several years.

McIlrath acknowledged the tremendous history by mentioning the banners, and the famous hockey greats that have played at the Garden. “Just the history and the whole atmosphere, I’m sure, it’s going to be great once the building is packed. I’m looking forward to playing here,” McIlrath told NHL.com.

The transformations at the Garden will occur just as McIlrath himself will be improving, and transforming into a “complete player.” He said a the process would be long, and would be beginning this summer as he will try to improve his speed, strength, and size.

The Rangers will play their first preseason game at Madison Square Garden in New York City against the New Jersey Devils on Thursday, September 23, 2010.

Earlier this week the New York Rangers lost to a very strong team, the Buffalo Sabres. One day later they played an opponent who would provide the Rangers with a more equal matchup. The Rangers ended up blowing the Toronto Maple Leafs off of the ice by beating them 5-1 on Wednesday.

This win was clutch for New York as it enhanced their chances to enter the playoffs. The Rangers now have 84 points, and find themselves in ninth place. They only trail eighth-place Boston by one point, and they are two behind Philadelphia who is in seventh-place.

The journey to the playoffs for the Rangers has been a rough one. Considering they had lost eight out of 12 games before going into the Olympic break, the chances of the blueshirts actually entering the postseason was very unlikely.

The Rangers only need to do one thing now to be a part of the postseason, and that is to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers in both games. The New York Rangers will be given their first opportunity at victory on Friday, April 9 when they suit up and hit the ice in Philadelphia.

The New York Rangers lost to the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden. This 4-3 loss did not help the Rangers advance their place in the playoffs. Even though a loss from the Boston Bruins last night did help the Rangers, New York still finds themselves tied for ninth place with the Atlanta Thrashers.

The Rangers quickly fell behind, but ended up leaving the first period with a 2-1 lead over the Blues with goals from Ryan Callahan and Marian Gaborik. Callahan scored on a power play with assists from Olli Jokinen and Gaborik, and Gaborik’s goal was his 37th of the season.

The only other goal made by the aRangers on Thursday night did not come until the third period when Wade Redden tied the game at 3-3. The goal made by Redden was the first time he scored in 58 games, and was only his second of the season.

Playoff hopes for the New York Rangers are slowly winding down. They needed to do well in this game, and they did not show up the way they needed to. The New York Rangers will play their next game in Boston against the Bruins on Sunday, March 21, 2010.

An announcement was made today by Glen Sather, President and General Manager of the New York Rangers, which said that Donald Brashear has joined a new team. Unfortunately for him, that new team is the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League. He was sent to the Wolf Pack after he cleared waivers, and did not have any takers from the teams of the NHL.

With the Rangers this season, Brashear has played in 36 games, and has missed a total of 25. This number includes the last eight games in which he did not dress. In those 36 games he has had 73 penalty minutes, and ranks third on the team for the most penalty minutes. In the Rangers’ 5-2 win over Phoenix, he registered his first and only point with the Rangers as an assist.

In spite of that, he is still a veteran of the game. He suited up for his 1,000 career NHL game this season against Atlanta on November 12.

The New York Rangers won their last game vs Tampa 8-2 on January 19. The Rangers will play their next game on Valentine’s Day, Sunday, February 14 at 1pm against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Late Monday night a trade was made between the New York Rangers and the Calgary Flames. The deal was completed after the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Flames 3-0 where questions of whether Olli Jokinen would continue his time with Calgary.

The trade sent the Rangers’ left winger Christopher Higgins and right winger Ales Kotalik to the Flames in exchange for center Olli Jokinen and left winger Brandon Prust. Kotalik, Higgins, and Jokinen are all experiencing bad seasons, but this trade gives them opportunities for fresh starts. The Rangers are hoping that their new center, Olli Jokinen, will be a great asset to NHL star, Marian Gaborik.

Out of Christopher Higgins’ 55 games with the Rangers, he only had six goals and a mere eight assists. Although Higgins was previously a first round pick from Yale, this is the second time in less than a year he has been traded.

In July Ales Kotalik signed a $9 million deal with the Rangers that was was supposed to last for three years. What the Rangers got was not what they were expecting. Instead of a power-play specialist, and a top player they received a team member who started off great, scoring six times in his first 17 games, but only managed to score twice after. Shortly after, head coach John Tortella sent Kotalik to the benches.

The New York Rangers will play their next game in Los Angeles against the Kings on Tuesday, February 2, 2010.

The New York Rangers were shut-out by the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night in Philadelphia. However, that was not the biggest news of the night. The fight that ensued between the Flyers Daniel Carcillo and New York’s Marian Gaborik became the hit story of the night.

It is no surprise that Daniel Carcillo would attack and begin a fight because he is one of hockey’s more well known enforcers. Last year he had 22 fights and was ranked 4th in the league for most fights. It is surprising however that he chose to fight Marian Gaborik, a Ranger superstar who has only been in one prior fight in his 551 game career.

Marian Gaborik is one of the NHL’s lead scorers. In 10 seasons he has had 248 goals, and he is one of the best players for the New York Rangers. This act of violence by Carcillo is “in hockey terms, a cowardly act.”

However, Carcillo claims to not have expected to fight who he did. It is unclear who dropped the gloves first, but the replay does show Carcillo grabbing Gaborik around his neck and punching him in the face with his gloves still on. The fight lasted for seven punches all by Carcillo as Gaborik landed none.

The New York Rangers will play their next game in Montreal against the Canadiens on Saturday, January 23.

The New York Rangers earned a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins on Monday night at Madison Square Garden to give the Rangers their 2nd victory in 10 home games. A late goal by Christopher Higgins was the shot that led the Rangers to victory after controlling most of the game, and almost letting it slip away.

The Rangers took the lead halfway through the first period. They took this lead through Ales Kotalik’s power-play. This goal was his first goal since Novemeber 5 of last year. The Rangers added to their lead with a goal by Erik Christensen in the second period. This was his second score in 3 games. At this point New York seemed to be the sure winner.

The Bruins finally showed up to the game late in the third period when they struck twice. Matt Hunwick made the first, and Blake Wheeler was right behind him scoring just over a minute later.

Christopher Higgins saved the game for the rangers when he struck with just 1:29 remaining in the game. The goal led the Rangers into joint seventh in the Eastern Conference. This goal was especially special for Higgins as this was his first goal at Madison Square Garden since October 6, 2005 when he was a rookie with Montreal.

Vinny Prospal of the New York Rangers will be out for at least the next 10 days, and it could be up to three weeks. New York’s second-leading scorer will be recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery that he had on Monday morning.

Prospal suffered from a torn lateral meniscus, which was cared for by Anthony Maddalo, the team doctor. He was injured on during Saturday night’s game when the Rangers’ lost in overtime to the New York Islanders at Madison Square Garden. Despite the injury, he played for 22 minutes in Saturday’s game.

The 34-year-old Czech was still feeling sore on Sunday afternoon so he did not participate in Sunday’s practice, and was sent for medical examination. The surgery could effect his chances of becoming a member of the Czech Olympic team.

Prospal signed a one-year contract with the Rangers this year. He has 8 goals, 32 points and 24 assists in 38 games this season. His assists are the 19th best in the NHL. He has played either on left wing or center with Marian Gaborik at his side.

The injury comes at one of the busiest times in the Rangers’ schedule. In the next 33 days they will play 18 games. 12 of those games will occur over the next three weeks. The New York Rangers’ next game is Thursday night at Carolina.

Chris Drury, captain of the New York Rangers, suffered from a concussion on Saturday, November 7. The concussion occurred during the Calgary Flames game when Drury endured a blindside hit to his chin from the shoulder of the Flames’ Curtis Glencross.

Drury began practicing and skating again on Saturday. He then returned for the first time in 5 games on Wednesday night against the Florida Panthers.

The New York Rangers won 2-1 in a shootout over the Panthers. This was the 2nd shootout for the Rangers of the season, and P.A. Parenteau made the winning shot in both of the games. This victory gave the Rangers’ back to back wins for the first time since October.

The captain entered Wednesday’s game against the panthers with 4 assists and 2 goals in 18 games. In Drury’s two seasons with the Rangers, he has averaged 33.5 assists and 23.5 goals.

Drury helped set up the first goal of the night for the Rangers. In the final half minute of the 2nd period, Marian Gaborik gave the Rangers an early lead with a power play from Drury.

The New York Rangers will play their next game in Tampa Bay against the Lightning on Friday night.

The New York Rangers will be playing their first pre-season game at Madison Square Garden against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday, September 15 at 7 p.m. Here are a couple games you cannot miss: Thursday, October 27 vs. New Jersey Devils, Saturday, December 26 vs. New York Islanders, and Wednesday, December 30 vs. Philadelphia Flyers.

This will be the New York Rangers’ first training camp and full season under head coach John Tortorella. Tortorella has a chance to make them the fast, aggressive team he likes to coach. With strong goaltending from Henrik Lundqvist, Tortorella feels his team can afford to take offensive risks because Lundqvist will bail them out more often than not.

The New York Rangers have made many line up changes during the summer. Marian Gaborik is the new high-scoring forward who signed on to play in the off-season. The team traded Scott Gomez to Montreal for Long Island native, Chris Higgins. They also traded Lauri Korpikoski to Phoenix for the talented Enver Lisin.

The New York Rangers signed tough guy winger, Donald Brashear, and speedy winger, Ales Kotalik. They decided to walk away from arbitration ruling, making Nikolai Zherdev a free agent. And finally, they signed veteran forward Vaclav Prospal.
