New York Rangers Make Minor Trade
Friday, February 3rd, 2012Center Erik Christensen has been unable to consistently crack the New York Rangers lineup over the past two seasons. As a result and somewhat of a reward for being a good soldier, the New York Rangers have traded Christensen to the Minnesota Wild along with a 7th Round Pick in exchange for minor league forward Casey Wellman.
The deal not only lightens up a log-jam at forward for New York, it also removes Christensen’s salary from their cap hit and frees up a spot for defenseman Steve Eminger who is just about ready to come off the Injured Reserve List.
New York Rangers head coach told the New York Daily News there are no hard feelings and he wishes Christensen well in the future with Minnesota:
“He gets another opportunity. For us to get to the roster, we wanted to get some other people in. He had some opportunities here, great guy… I wish the best to him, but we need to move by that right now and look at other things.”
Wellman has seen action in 27 NHL games over the past two years with the Wild but has also been unable to solidify a spot in the lineup. In those 27 games played he has recorded 2 goals and 4 assists to go along with 4 penalty minutes.
He is the son of former San Francisco Giants infielder Brad Wellman.
The New York Rangers are currently in first place in the NHL’s Eastern Conference with a total of 69 points in 49 games. Their next game is Sunday versus the Philadelphia Flyers at Madison Square Garden. The Flyers are hot on the Rangers’ tail with 66 points so Sunday’s game will be a battle just like it always is between these bitter rivals. The Rangers have defeated the Flyers by scores of 2-0, 4-2 and of course 3-2 in the NHL Winter Classic.
