New Jersey Devils Bolster Their Blueline

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

On Monday, the New Jersey Devils traded forward Rod Pelley and defenseman Mark Fraser to the Anaheim Ducks in return for defenseman Kurtis Foster and minor league goalie Timo Pielmeier. The deal also included a 7th round draft pick going to the Ducks in 2012.

Pelley went scoreless in the seven games played for the Devils this season, while Fraser went scoreless in four games played. The combined salaries for Pelley and Fraser, who will both be unrestricted free agents after this season, total $1.25 million.

Foster, in his seventh NHL season, has only played in nine games this season for Anaheim. He missed the first six games of this season recovering from thigh surgery. In those nine games he accrued only two points and eight penalty minutes. The Devils will be looking to Foster for help on their power play. 22 year old goalie, Timo Pielmeier, has been in Elmira (ECHL). He appeared in 10 games this season with a 3.45 GAA.

With these additions,Pete DeBoer will need to make roster moves when center Travis Zajac and defenseman Anton Volchenkov are soon taken off IR.

“I think we get a pretty good acquisition very soon in Travis Zajac, who will be back soon and Anton should be back by the end of the week,” Lamoriello said. “When you have such quality individuals (like Pelley and Fraser) who’ve given you so much each and every day in practice and in the locker room as support, you try and do the best for them. This is a win situation for both teams. They’re getting two role players who will be tremendous for them and we’re getting a player who has tremendous upside in the role we see that he’ll fit.”

New Jersey Devils Free Up Cap Space

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

After clearing waivers, defenseman Colin White and forward Trent Hunter were bought out yesterday by the New Jersey Devils for a $3.33 million salary-cap savings.

The buyout put an end to a 10 year career with the Devils for White. White joined the Devils late in the 1999-00 season and has only played for New Jersey throughout his entire NHL career. Often leading the team in penalty minutes, White established himself as a physical defenseman. During his tenure with New Jersey, White won two Stanley Cup Championships, one in 2000 and the other in 2003.  In 743 career regular season games White has totaled 20 goals, 105 assists, and 848 penalty minutes.

White’s agent, Ben Hankinson, is confident he will remain in the NHL. “I think there’s quite a few teams that are interested in his services,” Hankinson said. “We’re just sorting through our options right now. Colin White will be playing somewhere in the NHL this season.”

In exchange for another veteran forward, Brian Rolston and a second round draft pick next year, Trent Hunter was acquired from the New York Islanders last week.  While with the Islanders, Hunter played 459 regular season games, totaled 99 goals, 130 assists, and 201 penalty minutes.  He missed most of last season with a torn MCL.

In addition to opening up salary cap room for the Devils these buyouts will also free up space on the roster for some of their younger players, including defenseman Adam Larsson, the team’s 2011 first-round pick.

New York Rangers Win For Second Night in a Row

Friday, March 26th, 2010

The New York Rangers beat the New Jersey Devils 4-3 in a shootout on Thursday night. This win was the Rangers’ second win in two nights. The Rangers were behind the Devils all night, but managed to pull through with a 4-3 victory in Newark.

This was the second time this month that the Rangers were able to come back, and take the lead after having three separate one-goal deficits in Newark. During these two games Patrik Elias and Ilya Kovalchuk both put points on the board in each of the first two periods.

With 16.5 seconds left in the game on Thursday, Chris Drury made the goal that tied the game. Christensen sent him a backhanded pass who was able to score the tying goal, and that goal was his 12th goal of the season from the front edge of the crease. This only enhanced his reputation as being one of the most clutch players of the NHL. Erik Chistensen made the most important goal when he scored the Rangers’ fourth goal in the game during the shootout.

This game put the Rangers 10th in the Eastern Conference. They moved three points behind the number eight Boston Bruins, and five within the seventh place Philadelphia Flyers.

The New York Rangers will play their next game on Sunday, March 27 in Toronto against the Maple Leafs. Get your New York Rangers tickets from Select A Ticket now!

Devils Lose as Islanders Try to Climb Out of the Gutter

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Going into this weekend’s game the New Jersey Devils were ranked in the top of their division and 5th overall in the NHL, while the New York Islanders were pulling up the rear of the entire league, as well as the division, and the conference. With only 18 wins so far, the Islanders are certainly out of the playoff picture, but for one night, it was the Islanders who celebrated over their rivals.

The Islanders 4-0 win over New Jersey probably didn’t lift the spirits of too many fans, but it did show the teams potential to win big, and also perhaps exposed some of the flaws in the Devils team.

As 15,511 fans looked on, the Islanders struck early as Sean Bergenheim scored a wrist shot at 3:50 in the 1st period as he was assisted by Mark Streit. In the second period (at 8:45), Jon Sim backhanded an unassisted goal to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead.

The third period was all Islanders as well as Kyle Okposo and Bill Guerin both put in slap shots at 16:07 and 17:52, respectively.

The Devils are still the beat in the Atlantic Division, as the Islanders continue sit 20 games out but with just a little bit of pride in their weekend win.

The Florida Panthers had the answer to the New Jersey Devils last night as the pulled a 1-2-1 in order to beat the Devils 4-0 in front of 14,500 Fans in Florida. The loss puts the Flyers only 7 points behind the Devils as the season continues towards the playoffs.

Since the Devils had no offense, I’ll just run down the scoring summary for Florida:

  • Richard Zednik at 11:27 in the second period scored on a wrist shot – assisted by David Booth
  • Nathan Horton at 14:05 in the second period scored on a wrist shot – assisted by Zednik
  • Cory Stillman at 17:06 in the third period scored on a tip-in assisted by Weiss
