For the second consecutive year, fans of Major League Baseball are becoming interactive, and voting to select their favorite players to participate in the MLB Home Run Derby. The ballot allows fans the choose three of their favorite players from both the National and the American League to compete in the Derby. The MLB will of course have the final say in the players who are actually chosen to participate, but only after the initial fan votes are tallied.
The top 3 American League players are Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins in first place, Nelson Cruz of the Texas Rangers, and Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers in third.
Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies leads the National League poll, while Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals trails at second, and Prince Fielder of the Milwaukee Brewers is holding on at third. It is no surprise that Howard is at the top of the list as he won the Home Run Derby back in 2006.
Both Howard and Mauer started out with an early lead in the fan poll, and have been able to maintain it. The only question is for how long will they be able to continue gaining fan votes? The players who will actually be participating will be announced prior to the Home Run Derby.
The 81st annual MLB All-Star Game will be held on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, and the MLB Home Run Derby will be held the night before on Monday, July 12, 2010 at Angel Stadium.
