The leading lady who originally played the starring role in Mary Poppins has returned to grace the Broadway stage with her theatrical presence once again. Last Tuesday the Olivier Award winner, Laura Michelle Kelly, rejoined the cast of Mary Poppins at the New Amsterdam Theatre.

In 2004 Kelly won the Olivier and was recognized for creating the role in London’s West End premiere of the show. Then, in 2009 Kelly was seen on Broadway portraying Mary once again. This month fans of Broadway and Mary Poppins should prepare themselves for a special reunion. For the first time in the show’s three and a half year run on Broadway, the original stars of the production will be back on the stage! New York audiences will be able to see the first Mary Poppins’ stars performing the roles they originally played nearly four years ago.

Beginning on Tuesday, August 24 Gavin Lee will rejoin the cast as Bert, while Laura Michelle Kelly will be opposite him as Mary. Both of these amazing actors were the first to play these characters on Broadway. When they reunite at the end of August, it will be the first time they have performed together since 2005 at the beginning of Mary Poppins’ run in London.

Producer and president of Disney Theatrical Productions Thomas Schumacher said “We are enormously excited that, at long last, Broadway will get to see the sublime on-stage pairing of Laura Michelle Kelly and Gavin Lee, our original Mary and Bert.” He made it evident that the audiences of New York are in for something special, and that their chemistry will delight you.
