Top Kentucky Derby Contenders Are Emerging Already

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Little is more American than the Kentucky Derby. Inaugurated in 1875, people have gathered every year to watch what has been called “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports.” Attendance for the Derby ranks highest in North America and usually eclipses all other stakes races.

At the Kentucky Derby, three-year-old horses are pitted against each other on a one and a quarter mile racetrack called the Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The winner is rewarded with a fat purse, a blanket of 554 red roses, and the chance to win the Triple Crown. The event is rich with history and tradition, making it much more than just a race.

The 2012 Kentucky Derby cannot come soon enough for those who have been to the event previously. There are whispers of who the next champion horse and jockey pair may be. Although it is still too early to know exactly which pairs will be in the race, there are is a long list promising contenders.

The top 3 ranked horses are currently Creative Cause, Majestic City, and Overdriven, all of which are Kentucky bred. If you find yourself in the mood to experience a pastime older than baseball then come out to the 2012 Kentucky Derby, especially because there might not be a 2013.

Kentucky Derby’s 137th Winner: Animal Kingdom

Friday, May 13th, 2011

One week ago at the 2011 Kentucky Derby, a mystery horse named Animal Kingdom beat 20-1 odds to become the winner of the 137th annual of the race.  He was a come-from-behind winner, who had never even raced on a dirt track before.

In fact before this year’s Derby, Animal Kingdom’s career only consisted of four prior races. He has raced once on turf and three times on artificial surfaces, but never on old-fashioned dirt… until now.

In terms of history, the Exterminator was the last horse to take the Derby after racing just four times before in 1918. Additionally, Animal Kingdom raced in the Derby after a six-week layoff. The last time a horse won the Derby after a layoff this long was Needles in 1956.

Animal Kingdom’s win also represents his jockey, John Velazquez, and trainer Graham Motion. Velazquez was initially supposed to run Uncle Mo during this year’s Kentucky Derby, but when the horse scratched just before the race he was left with no one to ride. However, Animal Kingdom’s original jockey was injured, and left Velazquez for the job.

Next year’s Kentucky Derby will be held on Satuday, May 5, 2012 at the Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

One Month Left Until Kentucky Derby

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

And the countdown begins! There is exactly one month left until this year’s Kentucky Derby, and racing fans are getting excited. However, fans will have to wait until the first Saturday in May until they can fulfill the Kentucky Derby fix that they have been waiting for all year.

In the meantime, fans can absolutely look forward to major prep races, as well as other Triple Crown Races before the actual Derby. These races include the Illinois Derby, Arkansas Derby, Lexington, and this weekend’s Wood Memorial Stakes.

If history repeats itself, it appears that Uncle Mo will be having another cakewalk race in Saturday’s Wood Memorial. This Kentucky Derby favorite has performed extremely effortlessly in other prep races including his debut, which he rocked. Additionally, Uncle Mo took the Champagne stakes by close to five lengths.

Another example of an awesome Uncle Mo performance is the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile as he took first place by just about four lengths. The bottom line is that Uncle Mo is a force to be reckoned with, which will most likely be proven this weekend.

The 2011 Kentucky Derby will be held on Saturday, May 7 at the Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

Mucho Mucho Man a Kentucky Derby Hopeful

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

As time until the 2011 Kentucky Derby quickly winds down, hopefuls are beginning to emerge from the pack. A horse with a ton of buzz surrounding its chances for qualification in this year’s Kentucky Derby shares most of its name with a classic song from the 1970′s by the Village People.

Mucho Macho Man has moved up in the Run to the Roses top-10 contenders, and has now secured the No. 3 spot. The 3-year old horse is also favored to win his last prep race before May’s Kentucky Derby.

Following Mucho Macho Man in the No 2 spot is The Factor who was very successful at last weekend’s Rebel at Oaklawn Park. Bob Baffert, The Factor’s Hall of Fame trainer, must be excited that his horse is giving him a good chance at winning another Derby, his fourth to be exact.

Remaining at No. 1 is Uncle Mo, who is undefeated, and currently staying in Florida before traveling for his final prep race in New York City. The Kentucky Derby is just over a month away, but anything can happen during that time. Stay tuned to see what horses will be the top contenders in this year’s Derby.

The 2011 Kentucky Derby will be held on Saturday, May 7 at the Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

Road to the Derby

Friday, February 18th, 2011

There are only 73 days left until the exciting 2011 Kentucky Derby. Preparation for this Triple Crown race has already begun, and will continue with three preparatory races beginning this Saturday.

The races will kick off on Saturday at the Fair Grounds in Louisiana with the Risen Star Stakes. They will continue with Sunday’s San Vicente at Santa Anita, followed by Monday’s Southwest at Oaklawn Park. It is likely that from these stakes, possible top contenders for this year’s Derby could become evident.

Although top contenders will inevitably emerge through this trio of races, they could also surface during the first Derby Futures pool that opened today at noon. Uncle Mo seems to be the individual favorite at 2-1, but there are 23 other horses in the pool that could take over the top spot of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

There is still plenty of time for hopeful contenders to take over the No. 1 spot of being a standout racer for this year’s Kentucky Derby. The 2011 Kentucky Derby will be held on Saturday, May 7 at the Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

Kentucky Derby Festival Princesses Announced

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

Last week the Kentucky Derby revealed which five lucky women of Kentucky will be the princesses in the 2011 Derby’s Royal Court. The first time a Derby Festival Princess was crowned was back in 1957, during the festival’s second year. Former Princesses include Gail Gorski, the first female United Airlines pilot, and former Governor of Kentucky, Martha Layne Collins.

The court will join Gail Gorski and Martha Layne Collins in representing the city of Louisville and the Derby Festival as official ambassadors. In order to act as ambassadors for this year’s Derby Festival, these five young women will attend almost every official Derby Festival event. This means that the court must be present at nearly 70 events over a two-week period.

By a spin of the wheel, one of the five women will be crowned the Derby Festival Queen on Friday, April 15 at the annual American Founders Bank Fillies Derby Ball. This year Lauren Smith, Caitlin Carter, Laura Don Oliver, Katie Huber, and Trisha Maclin are all on the Royal Court, and are hoping for their chance to be named the Derby Festival Queen.

The 2011 Kentucky Derby will be held on Saturday, May 7 at the Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

Kentucky Derby Odds

Friday, April 30th, 2010

The odds for the Kentucky Derby have been changed a bit because the favorite, Eskendereya, is now out of the running for the 2010 Kentucky Derby. When the opening odds were released, Eskendereya was a 6/1 favorite to win the Derby.

Since Eskendereya is out of this years’ race, Lookin at Lucky (9-1) took over as the favorite. Lookin at Lucky has been the winner of five out of his eight races. He finished third at the Santa Anita Derby, which was his last race.

However the odds have changed once again, and now Super Saver is the favorite at 7-1 odds. This year Super Saver has raced in two races, but just missed first place in both of them. In the Arkansas Derby he finished second, and in the Tampa Bay Derby he finished in third place.

Super Saver’s trainer is Todd Pletcher who, although has never won the Derby,  is arguably one of the best trainers in the United States. His jockey is Calvin Borel, who may know Churchill better than any other. He has been the winner for two out of the last three Kentucky Derbies.

Other contenders in the 2010 Kentucky Derby include Ice Box, Stately Victor, Dean’s Kitten, Devil May Care, Mission Impazible, Awesome Act, Homeboy Kris, and others.

The 2010 Kentucky Derby will be held on Saturday May 1, 2010 at the Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

Long Shots Win Kentucky Derby Prep Races

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

A couple of long shot Kentucky Derby contenders are now on their way to the Derby after what happened on Saturday during two of the Derby’s most important prep races. After the Blue Grass Stakes and the Arkansas Derby, Stately Victor and Line of David, surprised everyone and are now headed to the Derby. This is a huge upset for the Derby because one of the horses had never won a graded stakes race, and the other was never even a part of one.

At the Blue Grass Stakes on Saturday with 40-1 odds, Stately Victor was the longest shot of all the horses on the board. Last year he earned sixth place in his only stakes race, but this year he was able to win the stakes race by 4 1/4 lengths.

At the Arkansas Derby, Line of Davis was another long shot, and his odds of winning were 17-1. He made his stakes debut on Saturday at Oaklawn, and pulled off a major and unexpected win.

The next question on everyone’s mind is, do they have a chance in the Run for the Roses? The 2010 Kentucky Derby will be held on Saturday May 1, 2010, and you can see in person if these two longshots can run their way to the front.

Eskendereya, Kentucky Derby Favorite

Monday, April 5th, 2010

The winner of the Wood Memorial horse race on Saturday was Eskendereya, and after this impressive win this horse is likely to be a favorite in the 2010 Kentucky Derby. Ridden by John Velazquez, Eskendereya’s made it clear that he is the horse to beat at the Derby considering that this was his second win by a significant margin in a row.

It seems as though Eskendereya may be his trainer’s first real shot at winning the Kentucky Derby. Todd Pletcher has won practically every race, but is 0-24 at the Derby and cannot seem to claim victory.

The Kentucky Derby in May is 1 1/4 miles, and has a 20-horse limit that Eskendereya has more than qualified for. It is clear that this horse is the top contender. Eskendereya is joined by another standout named Lookin At Lucky who finished in third on Saturday at the Santa Anita Derby. Despite this, Eskendereya will still remain the number one choice for the Derby.

The 2010 Kentucky Derby will be held on Saturday May 1, 2010, and you can experience Eskendereya’s and the other horses race for the win in person.
