Michael Waltrip is hoping to compete in yet another Daytona 500. If the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team owner qualifies, then this year’s race would make it his 25th straight appearance in the great race.

In an interview on Thursday, Waltrip said, “This will be my 25th Daytona 500 in a row. I think two people have started that many. Richard Petty and Dave Marcis come to mind. Our plan is to race the Budweiser Shootout and 500. I’m looking forward to it.” Waltrip is aready a two-time Daytona 500 champion, and is certainly looking to make that three.

February is a big month for Waltrip, as he also has a book coming out next month. In his book, “In the Blink of an Eye: Dale, Daytona, and the Day that Changed Everything,” Waltrip’s emotions run loose as he speaks of the day his friend, Dale Earnhardt Sr. died in a car crash on the last lap.

The pothole at the 2010 Daytona 500 on Sunday, February 14 managed to almost steal the show. The Daytona 500 was halted on two different occasions because of the holes in the pavement at the Daytona International Speedway in Florida.

One of the potholes made an appearance on the asphalt a little after the halfway point of the race between the first and second turn. The officials of NASCAR had to stop the race on Lap 123 so the track officials could work to repair the 9x15x2 inch pothole. The damage took nearly two hours to fix before the race could continue on.

Forty minutes later the pothole appeared again, which led to another halt to the race of 45 minutes to repair the damage. Altogether the repairs of using a pink putty-like filler in the pavement took over two hours, and forced the race to last more than six hours. Could this be due to the fact that the Daytona International Speedway hasn’t been paved in 32 years?

Despite the pothole situation, there was still a winner of the 52nd annual of the Daytona 500. Jamie McMurray beat out Dale Earnhardt Jr. for his fourth ever NASCAR cup victory. Tickets for the Daytona 400 are among the most coveted NASCAR tickets throughout the racing season, and they sell fast.

After 51 years Jack Hege might miss his first Daytona 500 ever. Last year he was honored for his streak of never missing a Daytona 500 by the Daytona International Speedway and NASCAR. He also got the opportunity to meet the competitors in the race.

As of now, Jack Hege is planning to watch the race on television at a friends house. The 82 year old man did not buy a ticket, but he did admit that he would want to continue his streak of witnessing the Daytona 500 in person if he could get a ride.

Jack Hege may be the only person to have seen ever Daytona 500. He’s seen it all. Jack Hege witness Dale Earnhardt’s only Daytona 500 win, and also when he died in 2001 in a crash on the last lap. You name it, he has seen it!
