For a limited time only William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice will hit the Broadway stage, along with some major star power. Al Pacino will be starring in director Daniel Sullivan’s production after the show completes its run at Shakespeare in the Park.

The announcement that made the public aware about the transfer from Central Park to the Broadway stage was made last month by the Public Theater. The executive director of the theater, Andrew D. Hamingson, said that response from the audience, critics, “and the desire of Al Pacino and the cast to bring it to a larger audience” encouraged the transfer.

The Merchant’s Broadway run will be produced by The Public with Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel. Richards and Frankel often collaborate with the Public, and The Merchant of Venice will prove to be no different.

The Merchant of Venice will feature Al Pacino playing the role of Shylock. The Broadway run is scheduled to being on Tuesday, October 19th, and will run through January 9th at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York City. This limited engagement will only have 78 performances due to prior commitments made by Pacino.

It has been one week since Jordin Sparks made her Broadway debut in the Grammy and Tony Award winning Best Musical In the Heights, and she couldn’t be more excited. “”It has always been one of my dreams, and it’s finally happening!” said Sparks.

The 20 year old was the youngest contestant to ever win “American Idol” when she was just 16 years old. Now four years later, Sparks can be seen on Broadway playing Nina Rosario in In the Heights. Her strong and beautiful voice blew the judges of American Idol away, and now she’s bringing that talent to the Broadway stage.

In The Heights is a Latin inspired musical set in Washington Heights, New York. The show manages to stay light even when telling the story of the problems that the characters come across. This musical is very energetic and has been compared to an uptown version of Rent.

Jordin Sparks’ engagement as Nina Rosario on Broadway will run through Sunday, November 14, 2010 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City. You don’t want to miss your chance to see this pop star take on Broadway!

Currently starring Tony Award Winners James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave, Driving Miss Daisy has added another member to the very talented cast. Boyd Gaines is a new addition to the cast who will be playing the role of Miss Daisy’s son.

Alfred Uhry’s Driving Miss Daisy follows Daisy Werthan, a 72-year-old Jewish widow living in Atlanta. Once Miss Daisy is considered too old to drive, her son hires her a chauffeur. The chauffeur is Hoke Colburn, an African American man, and that creates a bit of trouble for Miss Daisy in the beginning. However, the mismatch turns out to be for the best, as the two form a life-changing bond between each other.

Gaines is not new to the Broadway stage by any means. His other credits include Gypsy, Cabaret, Twelve Angry Men, Contact, and many more. He has also been in multiple Off-Broadway plays including The Extra Man, Major Barbara, and Center Stage. Gaines can be seen in films and on television in Funny Games, Heartbreak Ridge, “Fraiser,” and “Law and Order.”

The Broadway production of Driving Miss Daisy is set to open on Monday, October 25, 2010, with previews beginning on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at the John Golden Theatre in New York City. The show will run through Saturday, January 29, 2011 for a 16-week limited engagement.

Finally “Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark” will be coming to the stages of Broadway in a few months, despite the plethora of delays it has experienced. Since February the opening date of the musical version of the comic book, Spider-Man, has been affected by problems including the loss of its starring actress and actor.

Originally Evan Rachel Wood was set to play Mary Jane, the love interest of Spider-Man. However, she dropped out of the musical back in March due to a scheduling conflict. Along with Wood, the musical also lost Alan Cumming who was set to play the villain of the show also known as the Green Goblin. He too backed out due to a scheduling conflict.

The casting has been reworked, and the play will now star Reeve Carney as Spider-Man/Peter Parker, Patrick Page, and Tony Award nominee Jennifer Damiano as Mary Jane.

Finally, after being in the works for six years, the Broadway production of “Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark” is set to celebrate its opening night on Tuesday, December 21 in New York City with previews beginning on Sunday, November 19, 2010.

This month fans of Broadway and Mary Poppins should prepare themselves for a special reunion. For the first time in the show’s three and a half year run on Broadway, the original stars of the production will be back on the stage! New York audiences will be able to see the first Mary Poppins’ stars performing the roles they originally played nearly four years ago.

Beginning on Tuesday, August 24 Gavin Lee will rejoin the cast as Bert, while Laura Michelle Kelly will be opposite him as Mary. Both of these amazing actors were the first to play these characters on Broadway. When they reunite at the end of August, it will be the first time they have performed together since 2005 at the beginning of Mary Poppins’ run in London.

Producer and president of Disney Theatrical Productions Thomas Schumacher said “We are enormously excited that, at long last, Broadway will get to see the sublime on-stage pairing of Laura Michelle Kelly and Gavin Lee, our original Mary and Bert.” He made it evident that the audiences of New York are in for something special, and that their chemistry will delight you.

You don’t want to miss your chance to see the show’s original Mary and Bert back on the stage together. Get your Mary Poppins Tickets and many other Broadway Tickets at Select A Ticket!

Watch out New York, a new show with an excellent cast is hitting the Broadway stage! Alfred Uhry’s Driving Miss Daisy is a new Broadway production that will star Tony Award Winners James Earl Jones, and Vanessa Redgrave.

Before becoming a Broadway production, Driving Miss Daisy had a successful run Off-Broadway. Then in 1989 it was adapted into a film starring Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman. Now the Broadway production is set to open on Monday, October 25, 2010, with previews beginning on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at the John Golden Theatre in New York City.

Driving Miss Daisy is a Pulitzer Prize winning play, and is most certainly one of the most anticipated shows of this year.

The play follows Daisy Werthan, a 72-year-old Jewish widow living in Atlanta. Once Miss Daisy is considered too old to drive, her son hires her a chauffeur. The chauffeur is Hoke Colburn, an African American man, and that creates a bit of trouble for Miss Daisy in the beginning.
After originally premiering on Broadway in 1949, South Pacific was arguably one of the greatest musicals of the twentieth century. The original production won ten Tony Awards, and had audiences raving.

In 2008 the musical was revived, and audiences loved it just as much. The revival was a hit, which is proved by the amazing night it had at the Tony Awards two years ago. South Pacific was nominated for eleven Tony awards and took home the awards for seven including Best Direction of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, and Best Revival of a Musical. Two years later the musical is still a hit.

The musical is set during World War Two on a little island in the South Pacific. U.S. sailors who are preparing to make an attack against the Japanese Empire are occupying the island. The story follows a couple whose romance is threatened by the dangers of war and their own prejudices. South Pacific will take to you back in time where you will see if Nellie and Emile can overcome their prejudices, and not let the war tear them apart.

This Rodgers and Hammerstein musical revival is a one of a kind show. The musical runs every Tuesday-Sunday at the Beaumont Theatre in New York City.

Jersey Boys has been captivating audiences since its opening on November 6, 2005 at the August Wilson Theatre. Now in it’s fourth year, the musical has lengthened its booking to January 2, 2011.

Told in a documentary style, Jersey Boys is the story of the popular 1960′s rock and roll band, The Four Seasons. Band members Frankie Valli, Tommy Devito, Nick Massi, and Bob Gaudio are all blue collar boys who together become a huge hit sensation. The musical tells the coming of age of the band while highlighting their rise, fall, and success.

The musical opened to great reviews from the New York Post, Star-Ledger, and others. Then in 2006 Jersey Boys was named the winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical. Audiences and critics agree that this one of a kind musical is still going strong.

Jersey Boys would not be as successful if it weren’t for all of the people involved including two-time Tony Award winning director Des McAnuff, writers Rick Elice and Marshall Brickman, and choreographer Sergio Trujillo. The musical features amazing music by Bob Gaudio and lyrics by Bob Crewe. Surely you will enjoy the music from this show, and you may even recognize some of the tunes such as “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “December 1963 (Oh, What A Night).”

Since opening night nearly eight years ago, Wicked still remains the most popular musical on Broadway. This Broadway production is the most well received musical in New York City, and some fans even would go as far as to say it is the best musical of this century.

Wicked is an outstanding musical that takes you on an enchanted adventure to the past where you find out what happened before Dorothy ever went to see the Wizard of Oz. Known as the untold story of the Witches of Oz, Wicked gives you insight to when Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West meet for the first time as college roommates.

Not only is the storyline spellbinding, but the musical as a whole is too. Wicked features a large stage, and a magnificent set with great lighting which brings it to life. In addition the costumes are show stoppers from Glinda’s pink puffy dress to the outfits of the natives from Emerald City. The choreography, music, and lyrics top off the whole amazing experience to make Wicked the best musical of the century.

Wicked has appeared on our Top 5 events list numerous times, including the past five weeks in a row. You don’t want to miss out on seeing this spectacular Broadway musical.
Among the many problems delaying the opening of the Broadway musical, “Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark” is yet another hindrance. This time the actress set to play Mary Jane has dropped out. In a statement made by the producers of “Spider-Man” they said that Evan Rachel Wood dropped out of the musical due to a scheduling conflict.

Just 15 months after the announcement was made that she would be starring as Mary Jane, Wood made her departure public. The statement made by the producer, Michael Cohl, made it clear that Evan Rachel Wood was not required to stay with the musical, and that a search for a new Mary Jane was in progress. He also announced that the opening of the show would be delayed until later this year.

The creators and producers of “Spider-Man” have began to worry that other cast and crew members would also be taking on other projects and would therefore drop out of the musical. Cast members include Reeve Carney, who is set to star as Peter Parker and his alter ego, Spider-Man, and Tony Award winner Alan Cumming.

No dates have been set for rehearsals, preview performances, or an opening night. But you can sign up to be alerted when tickets are on sale.

The last week in February made for a slow week at many Broadway box offices. The New York City area has experienced many heavy snowstorms this winter which made ticket sales decline for many musicals and plays on the stages of Broadway.

Many plays in previews such as “Looped,”and “Next Fall,” had a slow week in sales. Some of the Major musicals experienced a drop of 30% or more in their weekly box office grosses. “West Side Story,” “Mamma Mia!,” “The Lion King,” and “Chicago” were a few out of the many musicals that were affected by the harsh snow storms in the NYC area.

However, there was one musical that did actually do well at the box offices. “A Little Night Music” is a musical revival which had a return from its star, Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Broadway’s slow end to February grossed a total of 14.2 million as opposed to the $17.8 million grossed the week before.

Now that the snow storms are over, it is your chance to come enjoy the beautiful New York City weather and see a Broadway play such as Phantom of the Opera, Jersey Boys, American Idiot, Wicked, and more!

The Broadway production of Wicked is standing the test of time. According to the people, it has been and is remaining to be the best and biggest Broadway musical in New York City. Seven years since opening on Broadway, Wicked still continues to break barriers. In early January the production broke the $2 million barrier in one-week. This was the third time doing so since November 2009.

The two witches meet in college, and hate each other in the beginning. However, before their lives go their different ways they learn to care for each other.

The incredible music of Wicked written by composer and lyricist, Stephen Schwartz has been delighting audiences for years with amazing numbers including “The Wizard and I”, “Popular”, and the enchanting “Defying Gravity.”

The Addams Family, featuring the bazaar and beloved characters, is coming to Broadway! It will begin previews at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on March 5, 2010, and will have its Opening Night on April 8, 2010.

The Addams family was created by legendary cartoonist Charles Addams. He is most known for his creation of the characters of the Addams family that formed the television show. The characters existed separately, but were never collectively called The Addams Family, until the TV show was created.

The Broadway musical production is based on this wonderfully weird family that is put to the test when outsiders come to dinner. This puts the whole family in the position to have a night that will change them forever.

This new show was created by Rick Elice and Marshall Brickman, most known for creating Jersey Boys, with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa. The Addams Family will be directed by Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch.

Talented actors and two-time Tony winners, Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth are to star as Gomez and Morticia Addams. Joining them will be Kevin Chamberlin as Uncle Fester, Jackie Hoffman as Grandmama, Terrence Mann as Mal Beineke, Zachary James as Lurch, Krysta Rodriguez as Wednesday, and Adam Riegler as Pugsly.

See this ghoulish American family come to life on stage by getting yourself Addams Family Tickets now!

The two-character Keith Huff play, A Steady Rain began previews on Thursday, September 10 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. The production is only for a limited 12-week period; It opens on Tuesday, September 29, and runs through Sunday, December 6, 2009.

The production stars Hollywood super heros Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig. They play a pair of Chicago police officers who were once life long friends, but are torn apart by a foul investigation.

A Steady Rain marks Craig’s Broadway debut, but he has worked in London with the Royal National Theatre and the Peter Hall Company. While this is Craig’s Broadway debut, Jackman is no stranger to the Broadway stage. He earned a Tony Award for his work in the Broadway musical The Boy From Oz. He also was in productions of Beauty and the Beast and Sunset Boulevard in Australia.

A Steady Rain is bound to be successful because of the team of people who put it together. It is directed by Tony Award nominee, John Crowley, and is produced by a mix of talented producers such as Barbara Broccoli, Raymond L. Gaspard, Frank Gero, Jeffery Sign, Michael G. Wilson, Cheryl Wisenfeld, Fredrick Zollo, Michael Rose Ltd, The Shubert Organizations Inc. and Robert Cole.

The production features original music and sound design by Mark Bennet, set and costume design by Scott Pask, and lighting design by Hugh Vanstone.

Avenue Q will play its final performance on Sunday, September 13 at the John Golden Theatre in New York City. This Tony Award winning Broadway show for Best Musical will have played 22 previews and 2,534 performances when it closes. Based on the book by Jeff Whitty, this show features music and lyrics written by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx with direction by Jason Moore.

The show is greatly inspired by Sesame Street. Some of the characters are in fact puppets that sing, as do the live characters. The show is definitely an adult advancement of Sesame Street that can be enjoyed by both adults and teenagers because of its relation to real life.

Avenue Q is about a broke college graduate named Princeton who wants to move to New York City and make a life for himself. He has a hard time fulfilling this dream due to his empty pockets and the high cost of living in the City. The only place he is able to afford is Avenue Q! When he moves to Avenue Q he meets all kinds of quirky people and makes many new friends. They struggle together to ultimately try to find their purpose in life.

For over four years the Broadway show, Jersey Boys, has been playing to sold out audiences. Audiences and critics agree that Jersey Boys is a sensational one of a kind musical. In 2006, the show won several Tony awards including Best Musical.

The show features the 1960′s rock and roll band, The Four Seasons, formed by members Frankie Valli, Nick Massi, Tommy DeVito and Bob Gaudio. Jersey Boys the musical follows the band’s coming of age and tells the story of their rise, fall, and success.

Uncommon for a musical, Jersey Boys has a documentary style storyline. The show is told by each member of the band taking turns narrating the story.

Each individual band member, and the band collectively have many life struggles, such as gambling debts, Mafia threats and family disasters, that they are forced to deal with throughout the musical. The band grew up together in the tough neighborhoods of New Jersey where they sang, rehearsed, and they ultimately used their innovative style to their advantage and founded the Doo Wop genre.

You’ll definitely enjoy the music from this show, and you may even recognize some of the tunes such as “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” and “December 1963 (Oh, What A Night).”

What was once a huge hit in London has made its way to Broadway at the Imperial Theatre in New York City. Billy Elliot has out shined many Broadway musicals by being nominated for Best Musical and fifteen other Tony awards including Best Original Score, Best Costume Design of a Musical, and Best Choreography.

With a little help from musical legend, Elton John, this Broadway show is based on the critically acclaimed British feature film and comes to life on stage. Elton John wrote a brand new score for the Broadway version of Billy Elliot. The show stars David Alvarez, Trent Kowlaik, and Kiril Kulish uniquely sharing the role of Billy.

Billy Elliot, an eleven year old child who is without a mother, is growing up in a northern town where men box and work in mines. He manages to find his way out of boxing practice and into a ballet class. He is attracted to the grace of ballet and secretly continues to take dance class in hopes of attending the Royal Ballet School in London. Billy Elliot is a story of one boy trying to follow his heart and make his dreams come true!

Disney’s The Little Mermaid will have its last performance at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City on Sunday, August 30. The number one selling Broadway musical of 2008 has been seen by nearly one million people. Since January 2008, the show has had 685 performances and 50 previews

It’s no surprise that the show receives rave reviews because of the dedicated cast and crew. The Little Mermaid is directed by the award winning Francesca Zambello and is produced by Thomas Schumacher. The show stars Chelsea Morgan Stock as Ariel, Drew Seeley as Prince Eric, and Faith Prince as Ursula. The show is choreographed by Olivier Award Winner Stephen Mear and has costumes from designer Tatiana Noginova.

The score of The Little Mermaid was created by Oscar-winner Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman. The show features songs from the film that you definitely want to see live such as “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl,” “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” and “Part of Your World.” There are also ten new songs by Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater. These songs include “The World Above,” “Her Voice,” and “If Only.”

The broadway production of 9 to 5: The Musical is scheduled to have it’s final show labor day weekend on Sunday, September 6 at the Marquis Theatre. This hilarious, fun, and entertaining musical will have performed 148 shows when it closes.

This musical comedy is based on the 1980 film starring Dolly Parton with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton herself. Allison Janney, Megan Hiltyas and Stephanie J. Block star in the musical as three female office workers who turn the tables on their sexist boss. This is definitely a girl power musical that is sure to make anyone laugh out loud.

This broadway production of 9 to 5: The Musical is directed by Joe Mantello, who is a Tony award winning director. He also directed shows such as Wicked, Take Me Out, and Assasins. This production is choreographed by the Tony award winner, Andy Blankenbuehler. It is also written by the multiple Grammy award winning songwriter Dolly Parton. That’s an all star crew putting together a five star show!

With catchy musical numbers like “9 to 5″ and “One of the Boys” you can’t even think about missing this broadway production. Get yourself tickets to see 9 to 5: The Musical, or any other broadway show now.

New York Yankees vs Tampa Bay Rays

You never know what’s going to make the list, so come back next Monday and see what events top all the others!

Welcome back for another weekly installment of Hot Tickets from Select A Ticket.

In the past week, these five items were the most popular events on www.SelectATicket.com.

Legally Blonde

Phantom of the Opera

2009 MLB All Star Home Run Derby

Mamma Mia!

Lion King

And there you have it for the past week. A big suprise to some might be seeing the 2009 MLB Home Run Derby listed there but bigtime baseball fans know that if you want tickets, you need to act fast!

Come back next week to see what tops the list for the next 7 days. My guess is we’ll see some changes and maybe some different Broadway shows making the list along with some concerts or sporting events. Only way to find out is come back next Monday and see!

Throughout the week of June 30th Joan Rivers will guest host a show on Sirius Radio entitled “Can We Talk… About Broadway.” The show will be an hour at noon ET, with an encore broadcast at 6 pm ET. It will run from Monday through Friday, July 4th. The entire show will also be rerun on Sunday, July 6th at 9 am and 9 pm.

The show will feature Rivers’ outrageous sense of humor and love for Broadway. She will introduce show tunes, play songs, and offer special commentary on her favorite Broadway shows. She will also feature rarely heard excerpts from the “Ed Sullivan Show” from the 60’s.

This marks a great opportunity for Broadway fans to hear entertaining discussion about their favorite topic. It’s also a great chance for those who haven’t been exposed to Broadway and all of its glory to become familiar with the world of theater. Anything that promotes this often-overlooked art form is a good thing for the theater. Hopefully it will inspire more people to purchase Broadway tickets.

Sirius Radio delivers more than 130 channels. All broadcasting is commercial free, in satellite radio. There are 69 music channels. There are 65 channels with sports, news, talk, entertainment, traffic, weather and data. It’s the future of radio. It’s nice to see Broadway getting it’s due with such a great media form.

Last week brought a lot of excitement and activity to www.SelectATicket.com.

The most popular event last week was The Lion King on Broadway. SelectATicket has a great selection of seats for most Lion King performances in New York and all at competitive prices.

The next event on the list of the hottest tickets is South Pacific tickets. Once again, SelectATicket proves itself as a popular web site for Broadway tickets.

Not to be outdone, the long-running Phantom of the Opera comes in third on the list this past week. Despite being on Broadway for several years, this timeless classic still is a hot ticket.

Yet another Broadway musical makes the list as Jersey Boys tickets were a hot commodity on www.SelectATicket.com last week. The story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons still packs the crowds and Select A Ticket is happy to help you acquire these hard to find tickets.

Last but certainly not least, a lot of the Select A Ticket faithful visitors are die-hard New York sports fans so it comes as no surprise to see that the Fourth of July Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees Tickets at Yankee Stadium were among the top 5 Hot Tickets from Select A Ticket last week. Everybody loves a rivalry and there is nothing like the bad blood between the Yankees and Red Sox to provide their own fireworks on the Fourth of July!

Be sure to come back next Monday to see which events top this week’s list of Hot Tickets from Select A Ticket.

Pop star and Broadway star, Clay Aiken is going to be a father. The mother of the child is his best friend and producer, Jaymes Foster. The 50-year-old woman was artificially inseminated.

A report at TMZ.com suggest that he’ll be very active in the child’s life. Foster was divorced several years ago. Since that time, she and Aiken have become extremely close. He lives in her home whenever he’s in Los Angeles.

Fans of the singer can see him perform by buying Broadway tickets for the New York production of Spamalot. He’s been a part of the production since January of this year, playing the part of Sir Robin.

He’s the third most successful contestant from American Idol, right behind Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. He’s the most successful male contestant. And he’s the most successful contestant to win second place.

I was glad to see Aiken finding a place on the stage in New York. Although I think he’s got a great voice, he doesn’t have the typical persona of a pop star. Judging by a performance I saw of his on “Scrubs,” I think he’s got talent as a character actor. I see a bright future for him acting and singing, and there’s no better place for that than Broadway.

Broadway touring groups have been concerned about their effect on the environment. They emit thousands of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere through the large trucks that transport all of the stage equipment from one city to the next.

Unfortunately, there aren’t alternative technologies available that will allow these touring companies to still get where they need to go, without contributing greatly to the environmental problem. So what do they do to “go green?”

The solution is to fund short- and long-term projects that offset the impact of the emissions. This is accomplished through NativeEnergy, inc., one of the leaders in high quality carbon offsets. These offsets will be created by new wind turbines, methane digesters on American family farms, and landfill gas projects.

When you consider that the Broadway League brings Broadway to 30 million people in New York and more than 240 cities across North America, the effect on the environment from their touring can be very large. Being ever mindful of the needs of the environment, the industry has responded appropriately to help offset their energy usage.

I think that this action represents the future of modern environmentalism. It doesn’t require huge sacrifices. We can still enjoy touring groups for our entertainment. But these groups, which generate large amounts of capital in their industry, have to take appropriate actions to make up for their large carbon footprint. You can continue to buy tickets to Broadway shows with a clean conscience.

You don’t have to be in New York to buy Broadway tickets to “Wicked.” A current tour of North America has been an amazing success. So much so that a second tour has been announced.

The simple fact is that there’s been an overwhelming demand for tickets. To call it a smash hit would be an understatement. It’s broken house records in every single city that it’s played. Producers felt that even with a second tour, the show would continue to break records.

The tour will start in Fort Myers, Fl. It will then go to Birmingham, Jacksonville, Norfolk, Indianapolis, Memphis, with additional cities to be announced.

“Wicked” opened on Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at the Apollo Victoria Theater in London. Various language versions have been added throughout the world.

It’s based on a novel by Gregory Maguire. It has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The original cast recording has been one of the fastest selling Broadway recordings, having gone platinum.

The play tells the store about two girls who come to Oz. it tells the story of how they become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.

Quite simply, it’s considered to be one of the greatest successes in Broadway history. It has a story that appeals to young and old. Everyone wants to see it, and you may be able to see it in your hometown soon.

And there you have it for this past week. Not surprising that there are three Broadway shows as last week’s weather in New York was perfect for a night out on the town.

The movie star system has been part and parcel to the entire industry since its inception. And it’s vital. Because a movie basically has one weekend to succeed. If it doesn’t the movie will likely not make money

Studios build up actors’ careers as recognizable brands that carry over from movie to movie. It’s always an enormous risk to hire a no-name actor for a big movie requiring a big payoff.

This poses problems for musicals. The perfect actor to sell the movie may not be a Broadway level singer. Sometimes you can fudge, and it works, as was demonstrated by Johnny Depp’s wonderful performance in “Sweeney Todd.” But Johnny Depp is sort of an exception to the rule. It doesn’t matter what the role, if you can get Depp you go with him.

But other actors have been less successful. “Chicago” and “Moulin Rouge” come to mind. Those starts were okay but they didn’t blow me away like many stage performers might have been able to do.

I’m reminded of Julie Andrews not getting cast for “My Fair Lady” because she wasn’t a big name. She then got cast for “Mary Poppins” and won an Oscar. My fear is that there may be some potential stars like Julie Andrews that will never get their chance in the current movie climate.

Broadway tickets sales suffers from this trend. Because the more successful musicals and Broadway performers are on screen, the more they’ll be able to draw people to the theater.

If you like Broadway theater, you may enjoy the new film, “Hamlet 2.” It’s not exactly Broadway quality, but that seems to be part of the fun. The trailer is available online here.

The film tells the story of a failed actor, Dana Marschz, played by famous British comedy actor Steve Coogan. After accepting that his life’s dreams will never come to be, he accepts a new career as a drama teacher.

But then the school administrators threaten to cut his department, inspiring him to do something really bold to save his job and his department. His response is to write a sequel to the most famous of Shakespeare’s masterpieces. Thus spawns a new, not quite masterpiece, “Hamlet 2.”

Of course, it must be remembered that everyone dies at the end of “Hamlet.” Marschz solves this issue with a time machine. He then employs a gay chorus and he’s off and running, with what’s looks to be big laughs.

Amy Poeler also joins the cast as a civil rights attorney who comes into save the play from being shut down. Elizabeth Shue also joins the cast in an unusual bit of casting, playing herself, a former successful actor who is now a nurse.

All in all, I think “Hamlet 2” could be a bit of fun in the Cineplex, and maybe slightly offensive.

18 year old Daniel Radcliffe is well known by pretty much everyone in the world as the title character in the Harry Potter movie series. But he also caused controversy and critical praise for his portrayal of a mentally ill stable boy in the Tony Award-winning play, “Equus.”

The play is coming to Broadway on September 5th, and he won’t be wearing his famous spectacles, or much of anything else. The play caused controversy when it was revealed that he’d appear nude in the play, a shock to those who think of him as a star of a children’s franchise.

The play also will star Richard Griffiths, reprising his role from the London production, as the psychiatrist who treats the stable boy. Griffith is also known by Harry Potter fans as the mean muggle Uncle Vernon.

Although I haven’t seen the play, I get the idea that the nudity is appropriate given the subject matter. I also get the sense that it isn’t sexual in nature.

This could hopefully appease the fears of parents who have daughters who might dream of romance with the young star and hope he’s setting a responsible example. But if not, they’ll have to skip purchase of any Broadway tickets and stick with the more family friendly “Potter” movies.

I never realized that the Tony Awards have such a complicated eligibility process. Some people have questioned it. But regardless of it’s fairness, it’s the most important award for theater in the U.S. So everyone in the industry is certainly pining to be recognized.

Rules are new every year. The decisions for eligibility are complicated.

This year, for example, they just announced that “The Little Mermaid” would be eligible for nomination in the Best Score category. This was in question, given that many of the songs were originally written for the movie. But since more than 50 percent was written for the play, the decision makers deemed it eligible.

The biggest criterion to consider is the required opening dates for eligibility. The management established that for the 2006-2007 year, the cut off date was May 9th, 2007.

Another criteria to consider is the actual theater. A Broadway theater is defined as one having more than 500 seats. Although the definition of Broadway theater does not take into account the location of the theater, the committee determines the list of eligible theaters, which only consists of theaters in New York City.

This Administration Committee has 24 members and determines eligibility. The Nominating Committee makes the actual nominations for the categories.

To see this year’s competitors, get your tickets for Broadway plays online and enjoy.
