Last night the Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeated the Seton Hall Pirates 60-48, and became one step closer to clinching a double bye for the Big East Tournament. Coming home from three consecutive wins on the road, the Irish were able to improve their home record to 16-0 with their victory over the Pirates.

Although the Irish were able to beat the Pirates, it was not a pretty feat. Notre Dame shot at 32 percent, and had seven turnovers during the game’s first half. Luckily they were only down by three points at halftime, and were easily able to make it up. Early in the second half, Notre Dame took control and did not fall behind the rest of the game.

The ninth-ranked Notre Dame will have their chance to make their hopes of getting a double bye come true on Monday night when they face the No. 15 Villanova Wildcats. If the Irish win on Monday night, then this will mark the first time in three years that they have gone undefeated at home.

The Big East Tournament will be held on Tuesday, March 8 through Saturday, March 12, 2011 at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

On Monday night, Pitt destroyed Syracuse’s perfect 18-0 start with a 74-66 victory over the Orange. The game took place as part of a special in college basketball on Martin Luther King Day, and was perhaps the most exciting of the day. It was an epic Big East Battle, as both teams were vying for the chance to become a No. 1 seed in March.

No. 5 Pitt now has a 19-0 lead, while No. 3 Syracuse had their undefeated start ruined in their only regular season game against Panthers. Since 2001, the Panthers are now 12-3 against Syracuse. However, since Pitt was ale to gain complete possession of first place, this win was especially important.

The Pittsburgh Panthers are now off to a 6-0 start, their first in Pitt’s Big East history. If Pittsburgh continues their success, they have a great shot at attaining the Big East title.

Syracuse’s 70-58 victory over No. 14 Notre Dame this weekend showed how well they can takeover a game. The Orange only led 34-33 at the half, but took advantage of their 3-point shooting game to earn them the victory.

The Big Ten’s lousy 0-5 performance in 2011 Bowl Games has shifted the world’s college sports attention from basketball to football. The Tournament is rapidly approaching, and should be something impressive to see.
