For the 2013-14 season the new Big East will consist of ten teams.

The 10 members will be the Catholic 7 schools that left the Big East – DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John’s and Villanova – plus Butler and Xavier of the Atlantic 10 and Creighton of the Missouri Valley.

According to ESPN.com, multiple coaches from the new league have stated the new Big East would play an 18-game, round-robin schedule in 2013-14.

The 2014 Big East Tournament will still be played at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Based at the Garden since the early 1980’s, the Big East Tournament has traditionally been one of the top conference tournaments in the country.

The final Big East Tournament as we know it will be played next week at Madison Square Garden. Games begin on Tuesday March 12 and the championship game will be played Saturday March 16.

As it stands now, several teams are leaving the Big East so this is the last chance to see one of the best college basketball conference tournaments in the country.

The current Big East basketball standings boasts Georgetown, Louisville, Marquette, Pittsburgh and Syracuse rounding out the top 5.

Not too shabby but when you consider Notre Dame, Connecticut, St. John’s and Villanova are also in the conference, you can see why Big East tournament tickets are one of the hottest items at SelectATicket.com.

The event unfolds at Madison Square Garden, as it has since the 1980s when the tournament really set itself apart as one of the best college sporting events in the nation.

In recent seasons the drama has continued, from Cinderella teams to marathon games going into multiple overtimes, there is always excitement and unpredictability waiting to unfold at the Big East Tournament.

Last night the Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeated the Seton Hall Pirates 60-48, and became one step closer to clinching a double bye for the Big East Tournament. Coming home from three consecutive wins on the road, the Irish were able to improve their home record to 16-0 with their victory over the Pirates.

Although the Irish were able to beat the Pirates, it was not a pretty feat. Notre Dame shot at 32 percent, and had seven turnovers during the game’s first half. Luckily they were only down by three points at halftime, and were easily able to make it up. Early in the second half, Notre Dame took control and did not fall behind the rest of the game.

The ninth-ranked Notre Dame will have their chance to make their hopes of getting a double bye come true on Monday night when they face the No. 15 Villanova Wildcats. If the Irish win on Monday night, then this will mark the first time in three years that they have gone undefeated at home.

The Big East Tournament will be held on Tuesday, March 8 through Saturday, March 12, 2011 at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
