Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong In American Idiot
Friday, October 8th, 2010On Wednesday, September 29 the audience of American Idiot got an exciting surprise. Green Day front man, Billie Joe Armstrong, played the role of St. Jimmy in this big-budget musical based on his 2005 album. The audience was not sure if he would be appearing on stage that night as he was not listed in the playbook, and it was not announced that he would be filling in for the show until the house lights were dimmed.
Armstrong’s character did not come on stage until the second part of the musical, which gave the audience time to get hyped up for his arrival. Filling in for actor Tony Vincent, Armstrong jumped into the role as if he was on Broadway all his life.
He played the role of Jimmy, an evil apparition whose goal is to corrupt Johnny, the protagonist of the play. As he entered the stage he belted out Jimmy’s title track, “St. Jimmy” with spiked hair and a black jacket and the audience went wild. The applause went on for so long at the end of the song that the musical was forced to be paused for an extra minute.
Armstrong took a bow with the rest of the cast when the show ended, and the curtain fell. The curtain rose again, as he played “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” on his guitar. Armstrong and the rest of the cast took one final bow beofre blowing kisses and shaking hands as he stepped off stage.
