A Broadway favorite will be welcoming Jordin Sparks to the stage for her Broadway debut. The 2008 Tony Award Winner for Best Musical, In The Heights will be graced with Sparks’ presence for a limited 12 week engagement.

Beginning Thursday, August 19, 2010 you can see the 2007 American Idol winner making her debut as Nina Rosario in In The Heights. The Jive Records platinum artist will play Nina through Sunday, November 14, 2010.

Sparks was just 16 years old when she auditioned for Idol, and to this day she remains the youngest contestant ever to win the singing competition. Her voice blew the judges and America away, and you can bet she will be bringing that talent with her to the Broadway stage in In The Heights.

The 64th annual Tony Awards were live on Sunday, June 13 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The Tony Awards are to recognize and honor the greatest theatre achievements. The winners at this year’s Tony Awards, also known as The Antoinette Perry Awards for Excellence in Theatre, included many famous actors and actresses including Denzel Washington.

Denzel Washington won his first Tony Award ever on Sunday for his work in Fences where he was recognized for having the Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play. Washington was not the only A-list celebrity on the winners list as Catherine Zeta Jones and Scarlett Johansson picked up awards for their work on Broadway as well.

Zeta-Jones took home her Tony for the Leading Actress in a Musical for A Little Night Music, while Johansson was deemed to have the Best Performance Featured Actress in a Play in A View from the Bridge.

Memphis won several major awards including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score Written for the Theatre, and Best Orchestrations. The nominees for the 64th annual Tony Awards were announced this afternoon. Tony Award nominee Jeff Daniels and Broadway star Lea Michele announced the nominees for 26 different categories pertaining to the art of theatre on Broadway. The Tony Awards are the most prestigious awards in Broadway, and are among the most coveted within the entire entertainment field.

The 26 competitive categories include Best Revival of a Play, Best Revival of a Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actor, in a Play, Best Direction of a Play, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Orchestrations, Best Lighting Design, Best Sound Design, Best Choreography and more.

A new Broadway play will be hitting the Circle in the Square Theatre in New York City. Lombardi will be coming to life on stage in the fall of 2010. This new American play is based on the biography written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author, David Maraniss, called When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vincent Lombardi.

The play surrounds the life of Vince Lombardi, one of the most successful NFL football coaches of all time, and a man with a puzzling personality. This Hall of Fame coach was not only known for his coaching abilities, but he was also known to be one of the most inspirational people who had many motivational quotes and teachings to offer.

Lombardi is a play by Eric Simonson who is an Academy Award winner, and a member of Steppenwolf Theater Company. Thomas Kail is the Tony Award nominee directing Lombardi, while Dan Lauria of The Wonder Years will be leading the cast.

After the musical about the birth of rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950’s received a visit from first lady Michelle Obama, and first daughters Sasha and Malia, it got the jump it needed. Without an unfamiliar title and starring actor in addition to a mixed review opening, the show is becoming a legitimate hit at the box office.

Sue Frost, one of the lead producers of Memphis the Musical says what the show is experiencing is a “slow and steady build.” It seems as though this is the case since the show opened in the Fall of 2009, and is finally picking up speed now.

Memphis the Musical is set in Memphis Tennessee where a white DJ named Huey Calhoun has a love for the music he hears in the black bars. He falls in love with a rising black singer named Felicia Farrell. Megan Mullally was set to star in the Broadway revival of “Lips Together, Teeth Apart,” a Terrence McNally play. However, she quit the show this week causing the opening of previews to be postponed for the spring season. The Roundabout Theater Company announced the postponement on Thursday following Mullally’s decision to quit.

Megan Mullally, best known for playing Karen Walker on “Will and Grace,” abruptly quit the show. Frustration with the lack of experience from her co-star Patton Oswalt led to her departure from “Lips Together, Teeth Apart” on Wednesday.

In a statement, Roundabout Theater Company’s artistic director Todd Haimes said that they were “surprised and disappointed,”  and that it was a breach of contract. Her replacement will be named shortly, but since the show was supposed to start preview performances on April 9 the first preview will be delayed.

Although the first preview of the show will be delayed, Haimes did say that the opening date will remain on Thursday April 29, 2010. Other cast members for the show include Patton Oswalt, David Wilson Barnes, and lily Taylor.

Among the many problems delaying the opening of the Broadway musical, “Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark” is yet another hindrance. This time the actress set to play Mary Jane has dropped out. In a statement made by the producers of “Spider-Man” they said that Evan Rachel Wood dropped out of the musical due to a scheduling conflict.

Just 15 months after the announcement was made that she would be starring as Mary Jane, Wood made her departure public. The statement made by the producer, Michael Cohl, made it clear that Evan Rachel Wood was not required to stay with the musical, and that a search for a new Mary Jane was in progress. He also announced that the opening of the show would be delayed until later this year.

The creators and producers of “Spider-Man” have began to worry that other cast and crew members would also be taking on other projects and would therefore drop out of the musical. Cast members include Reeve Carney, who is set to star as Peter Parker and his alter ego, Spider-Man, and Tony Award winner Alan Cumming.

The last week in February made for a slow week at many Broadway box offices. The New York City area has experienced many heavy snowstorms this winter which made ticket sales decline for many musicals and plays on the stages of Broadway.

The Addams Family, featuring the strange and beloved characters, is coming to Broadway! It is beginning previews tonight at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. The Broadway production will have its official Opening Night on April 8, 2010.

The Addams family was created by legendary cartoonist Charles Addams. He is most known for his creation of the characters of the Addams family that formed the television show. The characters existed separately, but were never collectively called The Addams Family, until the TV show was created.

Almost one year ago the Broadway production of God of Carnage began previews at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. Since then, it has become the 2009 Tony Award Winner for Best Play, and was given the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. The play was originally scheduled to be a limited engagement, running only until July 19, 2009, but has become so successful that the producers have extended its time on Broadway.

The current cast of the play includes Annie Potts, Jimmy Smits, Ken Scott, and Christine Lahti. They will be having their last performance on February 28, 2010. After their final performance a new cast will be taking over.

A new comedy based on a real event is coming to Broadway. Looped follows a summer night in 1965 when celebrated actress Tallulah Bankhead was called into the sound studio. She was called into the studio to re-record (or loop) the words “Die, die my darling,” a line from her final film.

However, when she shows up to loop the line she is completely intoxicated. Tallulah Bankhead was known to be a rebel. She was a party girl who experimented with alcohol, drugs, and bisexuality. She was definitely a bad girl in Hollywood at her time. During this recording session, she was far too inebriated to properly loop the line for the film, and a fight begins between the editor of the film, and Ms. Bankhead herself.

Starring in the Broadway show is Valerie Harper, whose claim to fame was as Rhonda on the Mary Tyler Moore Show. She became a Broadway star with her performance in The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife. The director of the show is Rob Ruggiero who is nationally recognized for both his musicals and plays.

Green Day’s 2004 album, American Idiot is coming to broadway and is a full-blown musical production. Both Broadway, and punk rock fans will enjoy this stage production.

The conceptual Grammy Award-winning album was based on the post 9/11 overall feeling of the time. The first-ever revival of the musical Bye Bye Birdie is now on Broadway. The Roundabout Theatre Company revival of this popular broadway show is the first show to play at the newly renovated and reborn Henry Miller’s Theatre.

The current cast for this show includes Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini, and Marcia Gay Harden. This cast is scheduled to appear through November 14, and the cast beginning November has yet to be determined.

The Broadway production of God of Carnage began previews at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on February 28, 2009. It officially opened on March 22, 2009 and was scheduled for a limited time, set to close on July 19,2009. Because of the success of the play, the run has been extended until February 28, 2010.

South Pacific is back on Broadway! It is based on a Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel by James A. Michener, entitled Tales of the South Pacific, which dealt largely with the issue of racism.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid will have its last performance at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City on Sunday, August 30. The number one selling Broadway musical of 2008 has been seen by nearly one million people. Since January 2008, the show has had 685 performances and 50 previews

In this time of economic turmoil, we hear almost on a daily basis about various companies losing various amounts of money and how the economy is hurting everyone – from the auto industry, to the entertainment industry. In fact a recent report from the Wall Street Journal highlighted the specific effects of the recession on the entertainment industry.

Superstar musicians were effected the most, as Elton John is believed to have lost nearly 1/3 of his portfolio while Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney came in second and third on the ominous list with estimated losses of around 22 and 15 percent, respectively.

However, the survey also listed the biggest winners in the entertainment industry, and – by no surprise, one of the recession-proof Broadway producers topped the list. Judy Craymer, whose Abba-based and film stage show sold no shortage of tickets on Broadway and managed to gross more than 2.5 billion worldwide, turned in a 2008 profit of 29%. In these tough times, that ain’t bad at all!

American Idol creator, Simon Fuller and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber also made significant gains in ’08.

When Oscar-winning actor Geoffrey Rush made known his intentions to perform on Broadway after a long and extremely successful on-screen career, there were many skeptics. After all, he has never done a Broadway show before, even though he was classically trained on the stage in Australia.

But Rush chose a great role – as a 400 year old king in the absurdist comedy, “Exit the King” and his comedic and dramatic abilities were showcased and extremely well received. The New York Post said “a major injustice has finally been rectified” with the 57-year-old actor finally making an appearance on the US’s biggest stage.

“Were he a Brit instead of an Aussie, New York theatergoers would rave over Rush instead of Simon Russell Beale or Ian McKellen,” wrote New York Post critic Elisabeth Vincentelli. “And we’d probably have seen him in something like ‘Macbeth’ or ‘Uncle Vanya’ by now.”

“Exit the King is scheduled for only a three-month run, so grab Broadway tickets today to see Rush in all his glory.

“Race”, a new play by legendary stage and film writer, David Mamet, has found a director for its Broadway run – a director who is well versed in the works of David Mamet and even his most recent creation.

David Mamet will be directing his own play on Broadway, which is set to open in December. At this point, that’s about all we know, as very little has been released about the show, which is still in the very early stages of pre-production. No cast or even so much as a plot description has been announced, but suffice it to say, Mamet is the perfect choice to direct this show.

If you are fan of Mamet, put this one on your radar, and be prepared to buy Broadway tickets as soon as they go on sale.

After a 29-year hiatus, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s “West Side Story” has returned to Broadway yesterday to a packed house and to mostly positive reviews. Critics from across the Broadway sector had their say about the direction the musical has taken under 91-year old producer (and original creator of the book), Arthur Laurents.

The show revolves around doomed lovers Tony and Maria, caught in the middle of a clash between the Jets, a self-styled Anglo gang, and the Sharks, a Puerto Rican gang. The 1957 musical, which was made into a film in 1961 starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer and Rita Moreno, features such classic songs as “Tonight,” “Somewhere” and “I Feel Pretty.”

David Rooney of Variety :”It’s rewarding to report that after nearly three decades’ absence from Broadway, this masterwork has been given the revival it deserves. Under the knowing direction of Arthur Laurents, the 1957 show remains both a brilliant evocation of its period and a timeless tragedy of disharmony and hate.”

Melissa Rose Bernardo of Entertainment Weekly calls it an “uneven but enjoyable revival”, saying “whenever Scaglione or Olivo (Tony and Maria) are on stage the show kicks into gear.”

Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune calls this a “mostly successful revival.” “It retains the heart, soul and original moves and sounds of a theatrical masterpiece…. And yet this new production also radically updates and rejuvenates the show’s social milieu.”

Despite the tumbling profits of industries nation-wide, several sectors of the entertainment industry are managing to hang on and even thrive under the heavy recession that is causing some other sectors to balk and even fold.

Back in January, it was being reported that a record number of Broadway shows were closing due to the looming recession and producers were pulling the plug, rather than taking the chance of seeing red in ’09.

But that was then. This week it was reported that Broadway grosses are holding their own and some shows -notably the revival of “West Side Story” – are doing $1 million a week even in previews. However, the growth spurt seems to be mostly centered on non-musicals, as very few musicals in even in production – probably because of the high cost of producing them.

There are also a huge list of notable TV and film cross-over stars who are starring on Broadway – which could also be a huge reason for the growing numbers.

Freshly out of the “what the heck” files, we learned today that headlining the Broadway openings of 2010 will be “Spiderman”. It’s not going to be a low-budget production either… not at all. Rumors are persisting that a budget exceeding $30 Million will accompany the show when it debuts next winter.

A formal announcement was made yesterday that “Spiderman, Turn off the Dark” will officially open on Broadway on February 18, 2010 at the Hilton Theatre. As for casting, it looks like Evan Rachel Wood is a lock to play Mary Jane Watson, while the role of Spiderman is undecided at this point.

The title of the play seems to suggest the Venom may be a part of it as the black suited nemesis of our friendly neighborhood Spiderman. Much of the plot is still shrouded in mystery, but one thing is for sure, Broadway ticket holders will know in less than a year, what Spidey’s next adventure will be.

Rumors are swirling that Michael Jackson tickets may soon become available for Michael Jackson concerts in 2009. Speculation persists that Jackson will perform a series of concerts either in Las Vegas or in London.

As if that isn’t enough for Michael Jackson fans, Thriller the Musical tickets are expected to hit Broadway, possibly as early as 2009!

Much ado was made by Broadway fans when Kathleen Turner was chosen to star in this season’s comedy “The Third Story” at the Lucille Lortel theatre. The long-time television, film, and stage star is extremely well respected in Hollywood and in New York, and her re-appearance on Broadway was met with much excitement.

But many fans were sorely disappointed earlier in the week when Turner took a fall and injured her knee fairly severely. Three shows were cancelled this week while Turner was recovering and whispers began to spread that the show would be cancelled altogether. However, Turner announced on Friday that she would be returning this weekend with a leg brace and a cane after she was cleared by her doctors.

“Kathleen Turner personifies the attitude of the Broadway trooper,” said co-artistic director Bernard Telsey in a statement released today. “Against any odds, she must – and will – make her performance.”

Ohhh that Britney! The ‘former’ pop sensation who has since become more famous-for-being-famous (a la Paris Hilton) is back, and her path to a comeback may take her right down Broadway in NYC. According to recent reports, Britney Spears is heavily considering a spell on Broadway as she attempts to get her music career back on track.

Spears, whose sixth album is set to be released in December, has recently been seen in New York at Broadway shows, and reports say that she is researching in order to find the “perfect part” to make her stage debut.

Furthermore, many believe that she may be contemplating a move to New York City. A source told MSNBC however, “Britney always toys with the idea of going to New York. Obviously there’s no chance that is happening unless Kevin moves, too.”

Spears has always had the “itch” for acting, as she has made numerous television and film cameos, as well as starring in her own film in 2002, Crossroads. Additionally, she is no stranger to performing in front of crowds, though acting in Broadway and singing pop hits to teenagers, are certainly two very different things.

Another highly touted play, Equus, starring Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe is also performing well, bringing in $597,346 during week one. Katie can’t take all the credit, perhaps, for the success of All My Sons, as the show also stars veteran actors in Tony Award winner, John Lithgow and Academy Award winner Dianne Wiest.

One of America’s most endearing characters is about to receive a change as Broadway’s “Mary Poppins” is about to introduce a new actor in its starring role as well as Bert, the Chimney Sweep.
