Mark Sanchez and Geno SmithIncumbent quarterback, the much maligned Mark Sanchez is holding his own but just how long will it last?

Despite reaching the AFC Championship game twice in his young career, fans have grown impatient waiting for Sanchez to fulfill his potential and the “what have you done for me lately” mentality is in full force.

Sanchez has done little to quiet his detractors, highlighted and underscored by a 5 turnover (4 interceptions and 1 fumble) Monday Night Football game against Tennessee which sealed the Jets’ fate in terms of missing last year’s playoffs. Losing that game by just 4 points, three of the five turnovers in the fourth quarter and fumbling the ball in the final minute of play in a game which eliminated the team from post season contention, it was a summation of Sanchez’s short-comings all in one game. Too many turnovers and choking at make-or-break moments. It is no wonder many fans have had enough.

Enter Geno Smith. In his last two seasons of NCAA football he threw for over 8,500 yards, 73 touchdowns and only 13 interceptions. His highlight reels look like something out of a video game. Mad scrambles, long bombs, multiple touchdowns per game… this is what has Jets fans salivating but can he do it at the NFL level?

The competition in camp is going to be something to keep a close eye on and the early pre-season Jets games are going to be meaningful and interesting as a result.

Visit New Jersey ticket broker SelectATicket.com where tickets remain available for all Jets pre and regular season games at MetLife Stadium.

David Wilson of the NY GiantsThe New York Football Giants open camp today in East Rutherford, NJ for the 2013 season.

As with every season, the Giants’ goal is to reach the Super Bowl, which this season just so happens to be in MetLife Stadium, right across the parking lot from their practice facility!

The team has seen a few players come and go this past off-season and during camp there is likely to be some more changes to the lineup.

Topping the list of prominent players to have left is running back Ahmad Bradshaw.

Expected to take his place will be the combination of speedster David Wilson and the brusing Andre Brown.

If Wilson and Brown can supply a consistent ground game, the Giants offense should be one to be feared as their wide receivers are as strong as any in the league with Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks and Rueben Randle leading the way.

The first Giants home preseason game is coming up on August 18 against the Indianapolis Colts. Tickets are starting at just $11 each. If you are a diehard fan and are looking for an affordable night out, it doesn’t get much cheaper than that!

The much-anticipated season home opener is vs Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos on September 15. Tickets remain available but the opening game is always a big one among fans so those looking to attend are encouraged to secure tickets well ahead of time considering this year it puts brother against brother as Eli and Peyton face off for what may be the final time of their careers.

Jagr and Brodeur

In an effort to replace the offense lost by the sudden retirement of Ilya Kovalchuk, the New Jersey Devils announced they have signed legendary right wing Jaromir Jagr to a one year deal.

The contract calls for Jagr to make $2 Million in base salary with a series of games played bonuses which could see him make up to $4 Million in total.

While he’s not the same dominant player he once was when he first broke into the league in the 1990-91 season, Jagr still is a strong puck possession player and a skilled passer.

It is far to early to start making up lines but it is conceivable he could be paired with fellow Czech Patrick Elias. Jagr has always excelled when playing with fellow countrymen and there’s no reason this pairing would be any different.

Having been in the league for so long, minus three seasons when he played in the KHL, Jagr has accumulated 681 goals and 1,007 assists in 1,391 games.

He’s been on so many teams that a very good ticket package could be created to see the Devils against his former teams:

  • Pittsburgh Penguins
  • Washington Capitals
  • New York Rangers
  • Philadelphia Flyers
  • Dallas Stars
  • Boston Bruins

Those would be some great games! Not to mention his second outdoor NHL game (he was on the Flyers for their 2012 Winter Classic loss to the Rangers) comes up on January 26 at Yankee Stadium against a team he once captained, the cross-river rival New York Rangers.

While he may not put up the big numbers, he is still a threat, will still provide quality scoring chances for his linemates and his wrist shot has not left him, either. His shifts may be shorter, his speed not always there, but make no mistake, Jaromir Jagr was the best offensive player remaining on the open market and the Devils are a better team with him than without him.

This guy is going to be remembered as one of the all-time greats, this season take advantage of being able to see him do his thing and order New Jersey Devils tickets to any home game, all games are available now at SelectATicket.com.

Ilya KovalchukSuperstar sniper Ilya Kovalchuk suddenly announced his retirement from the New Jersey Devils and the NHL yesterday.

Leaving with several years and $77M on his contract, Kovalchuk is expected to return to his native Russia and sign with a team in the KHL. A lower level league but they are willing to pay big money to big Russian stars like Kovalchuk.

The Devils are now left with a gaping hole in their forward ranks as Kovalchuk was the centerpiece of their offense and the main goal scorer on the team.

While they still have Patrick Elias and Adam Henrique, Kovalchuk is in a class above them in terms of talent.

What will General Manager Lou Lamoriello do now to fill this void?

Perhaps Kovalchuk’s retirement is a blessing in disguise however as the team is now freed from the huge salary cap hit his contract brought and now have more room to play with to bring in new players. For the $6M or so cap hit that Kovalchuk occupied, the team can bring in 2 or more serviceable forwards to fill out the roster.

There are still some skilled forwards available in free agency, namely Mikhail Grabovski (recently bought out by the Toronto Maple Leafs), the aging but still able Jaromir Jagr, Damien Brunner formerly of Detroit, and Brad Boyes who has put up good numbers in the past.

In the long run, this is probably a great thing for the Devils as they are freed up from the cap hit that Kovalchuk took up, but in the short term, the team is in desperate need of offense. Looking back over the past few years, one can’t help but wonder if the Devils could’ve Zach Parise instead of blowing the money they wasted on Kovalchuk but that is all water under the bridge at this point.

Lou Lamoriello is likely to come up with something to keep the team competitive, especially considering this may be Martin Brodeur’s final season with the New Jersey Devils.

The NHL officially announced the 2014 Heritage Classic, their outdoor game held in Canada, will be March 2 at BC Place in Vancouver.

The teams will be the Ottawa Senators and Vancouver Canucks.

With the Senators boasting newly acquired Bobby Ryan along with Erik Karlsson and Jason Spezza and the Canucks featuring the Sundin twins, this should be one outstanding game to showcase the sport of hockey.

This marks the first outdoor game in Canada since the Canadiens and Flames played in the 2011 Heritage Classic, as a result there is expected to be a high demand for tickets.

Interested fans can start making plans now to attend this matchup and are encouraged to register at Select-A-Ticket to receive an alert when 2014 Heritage Classic tickets are available to order online.

Victor CruzThe New York Giants have announced that wide receiver Victor Cruz has signed a 5 year, $43 million contract extension.

Now that’s something to dance about, right Victor?

Cruz had 86 receptions for 1,092 yards last season and has become a fan favorite over the past few years. His explosive speed and jubilant celebrations have endeared him to the MetLife Stadium crowd, and it doesn’t hurt that he makes big plays!

This deal will keep Cruz with the Giants until 2018 at which point he will be 32 years old. If his health holds up, he may be looking at another big contract come that time but for now the Giants have locked up their top receiver and can move on to solidifying the rest of the lineup.

A native of New Jersey, Cruz had this to say to the NY Daily News about his new deal:

“I think my deal is tremendous,” Cruz later said. “I think it’s definitely a great deal. I don’t want to be anywhere else. I don’t want to play anywhere else. Financially my family is set for the rest of my life. That’s all I could ask for.”

Speculation is that Hakeem Nicks will be the next wide receiver to be signed as the Giants look to keep Eli Manning’s top targets in the fold.

The season is right around the corner and now is the best time to find the best available seats for New York Giants home games, head over to SelectATicket.com and pick some up today.
