Incumbent quarterback, the much maligned Mark Sanchez is holding his own but just how long will it last?
Despite reaching the AFC Championship game twice in his young career, fans have grown impatient waiting for Sanchez to fulfill his potential and the “what have you done for me lately” mentality is in full force.
Sanchez has done little to quiet his detractors, highlighted and underscored by a 5 turnover (4 interceptions and 1 fumble) Monday Night Football game against Tennessee which sealed the Jets’ fate in terms of missing last year’s playoffs. Losing that game by just 4 points, three of the five turnovers in the fourth quarter and fumbling the ball in the final minute of play in a game which eliminated the team from post season contention, it was a summation of Sanchez’s short-comings all in one game. Too many turnovers and choking at make-or-break moments. It is no wonder many fans have had enough.
Enter Geno Smith. In his last two seasons of NCAA football he threw for over 8,500 yards, 73 touchdowns and only 13 interceptions. His highlight reels look like something out of a video game. Mad scrambles, long bombs, multiple touchdowns per game… this is what has Jets fans salivating but can he do it at the NFL level?
The competition in camp is going to be something to keep a close eye on and the early pre-season Jets games are going to be meaningful and interesting as a result.
