As if there wasn’t enough drama surrounding Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez already, now he is in a verbal feud with team General Manager Brian Cashman.
This reminds some fans of the old days when owner George Steinbrenner would grab headlines while fighting with his own managers and players.
The trouble began when the injured Rodriguez tweeted that he’s been deemed fit to resume play.
In response, Cashman told ESPN New York that A-Rod “should keep his (expletive) mouth shut.” A rather harsh quote which leads one to believe there’s more underlying tension than perhaps any of us realize between the two sides.
A-Rod has been out of the lineup since last year’s playoffs and the Yankees have had difficulty scoring runs thus far this season. Whether he’s still got enough game to help them offensively is to be determined if and when he returns to the batting order.
In more positive team news that real fans want to hear about, the Yankees were victorious last night as Ichiro hit a walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure a 4-3 win and give the Yankees a record of 42-34 on the season.
The Yankees trail Boston by just 2.5 games in the AL East standings and look to inch closer tonight and tomorrow with two more games against the Rangers to closeout the homestand.
