As hockey fans know, the NHL Winter Classic was canceled due to the lockout earlier this season. What you may not know is that in addition to the rescheduled Winter Classic (Detroit and Toronto will faceoff in Ann Arbor in 2014), the NHL reportedly is also planning on holding a number of outdoor games next season. The least of which not being the return of the Heritage Classic.
Started in 2003 when Montreal and Edmonton met outside, the NHL Heritage Classic is an outdoor game played Canada and, so far, has featured Canadian-based NHL teams only. The second Heritage Classic saw Calgary and Montreal play to a 4-0 Flames victory at McMahon Stadium in 2011.
Now it appears the Heritage Classic, Winter Classic as well as other outdoor games will be the featured events for the NHL in 2014.
Some of the venues bandied about are Yankee Stadium, Dodger Stadium and all cities in Canada… how about that?!
