The head coaches for the Winter Classic Alumni game this year will be Scotty Bowman and Barry Smith for Detroit and Red Kelly and Pat Quinn for Toronto. The event will be held on New Year’s Eve at Comerica Park in Detroit as part of the festivities surrounding the Winter Classic between the present day clubs. The Winter Classic will be held in Ann Arbor at Michigan Stadium.

So many past players on each side have expressed interest in the alumni game that they’ve decided to split the squads and play two games that day. This way fans get to see all their former favorites playing together again and each player will get their share of ice time.

Some of the players already announced for the Red Wings are:

Ted Lindsay
Alex Delvecchio
Mickey Redmond
John Ogrodnick
Luc Robitaille
Dino Ciccarelli
Chris Chelios
Larry Murphy
Mark Howe
Kris Draper
Kirk Maltby
Darren McCarty
Joe Kocur
Chris Osgood
Mike Vernon

The Maple Leafs have an equally storied tradition, dating back to the early days of the league. Some of the players from Toronto’s past who are expected to play in the alumni games are:

Johnny Bower
Ron Ellis
Jim McKenny
Darryl Sittler
Mike Palmateer
Rick Vaive
Darcy Tucker
Kevin Maguire
Dave Andreychuk
Doug Gilmour
Wendel Clark
Curtis Joseph
Felix Potvin

These games are going to be great for the fans. As witnessed by last year’s event between Rangers and Flyers alumni, the players enjoy getting out on the ice again just as much as the fans love to see their childhood heroes one more time.

New York Yankees third baseman Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez was drilled on the hand by an 88 mph Felix Hernandez change-up in last night’s game. Adding insult to injury, the Yankees lost the game 4-2 to Seattle.

A-Rod is expected to miss 6-8 weeks which would basically be the rest of the regular season. Having the injury almost anywhere else at this point of the year wouldn’t be so bad but being that it is his hand it has to raise concerns about his hitting ability upon his return. The injury will need to be fully healed in order for him to make full contact with an in-coming fastball or he risks potentially re-injuring the hand.

With this injury, fans and pundits have taken to speculating that the Yankees will look to acquire a replacement third baseman for the stretch drive. New York’s WFAN morning show hosts Boomer & Carton were discussing the Yankees could even try to acquire David Wright from the crosstown New York Mets. This deal, while certainly attractive to Yankees fans, would have Mets fans up in arms. There is no way simply from a PR standpoint that the Mets could allow Wright to become a New York Yankee.

Baseball fans can go to any Yankees games and see who will be playing third base. Immediately, the Yankees have promoted Ramiro Pena but GM Brian Cashman is also working the phones and kicking tires to see if he can acquire a third baseman to help the Yankees until Rodriguez makes his return to full form.

Ichiro Suzuki, commonly known by the single name Ichiro, is now a New York Yankee following a trade which saw him go from the basement to the penthouse as Seattle sent him to New York in exchange for two young pitching prospects, 25-year-old righties D.J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar.

Ichiro was quoted by the Associated Press as saying “I am going from a team with the most losses to a team with the most wins,” he said. ”It’s hard to contain my excitement for that reason.”

The Yankees also received cash in the deal.

Ichiro wasted no time in impressing his new team as he faced the Mariners right away, going 1-for-4 and having a stolen base for New York in a 4-1 win over Seattle.

Ichiro is expected to solidify the Yankees outfield and he still has some hits left in his bat.

It was a big day in New York sports in terms of trades as the New York Rangers hockey club also made a big splash by landing talented forward Rick Nash in a trade announced earlier in the day.

Ichiro is excited about playing for the Yankees and the chance to possibly play in the World Series. With his acquistion, Yankees fans are excited as well and some are certainly looking for Yankees tickets for their games this weekend against the Red Sox to welcome Ichiro to the Bronx.

TSN’s Darren Dreger first broke the story this afternoon that the New York Rangers have finally acquired superstar winger Rick Nash from the Columbus Blue Jackets. In addition to Nash, the Rangers also receive a 3rd round pick and an as yet unnamed minor league defenseman from Columbus. In return, the Blue Jackets receive Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, Tim Erixon and New York’s 2013 First Round pick.

The Rangers have been hot on Nash’s trail since the trade deadline last season when it was revealed he was available. As it turns out, Nash informed management that if they were going to rebuild again, he wanted out of Columbus and thought he could best help the franchise accelerate the process by being traded away. He clearly was their biggest asset.

Known for his size, skill and speed, Rick Nash is expected to becoming the first line Left Wing for the Rangers and play with Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik. Should they find chemistry, that trio could be a dominant force. Nash will also help New York on the power play where they struggled mightily last season and in the playoffs.

With their goaltending and defense already solid, New York has just addressed a glaring hole in their top 6 forwards with the acquisition of Nash. Should they be able to also court free agent forward Shane Doan, who visited New York last week, the Rangers will certainly be considered prime contenders for the Stanley Cup in 2013.

This exciting deal is expected to cause a spike in New York Rangers ticket sales for sure, you can bet that every Blueshirts fan is going to want to welcome Rick Nash to Broadway with open arms at their home opener Thursday November 1 vs the Dallas Stars.

Classic rock fans will be pleased to hear The Who have officially announced an upcoming tour which will feature the band playing their legendary album “Quadrophenia” in its entirety plus a bonus set of their smash hits. Talk about a show that packs a punch, the setlists for these concerts will contain “The Real Me”, “5.15”, “Love Reign O’er Me” for sure plus the chance to hear “Baba O’Riley”, “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, “Behind Blue Eyes”, “Who Are You”, “My Generation”, “Substitute”, “Pinball Wizard” and countless other gems from The Who.

Earlier this year a remastered version of Quadrophenia was released and there is also talk of new songs being written by Pete Townshend for a potential new album. Townshend was recently ranked #10 in the all-time top 100 guitar players by Rolling Stone. The interesting this is they had guitarists do the voting so he is clearly well respected among his peers.

Lead singer Roger Daltrey is still in fine form as he recently toured with a band performing The Who’s “Tommy”. On drums will be Zach Starkey, son of Ringo Starr, who has been with the band for at least the past 12 years. Simon Townshend will also join in as his guitar adds tremendously to the live sound of the band and his vocals are spot on for harmonizing with his brother and Roger. No official word on who will play bass but it is likely Pino Palladino will once again fill in admirably for the late John Entwistle.

Here is a list of tour dates scheduled so far and fans can sign up to be alerted when The Who tickets go on sale by registering for a free email alert.

The New York Mets suffered a big blow to their starting rotation when Dillon Gee went down with an injury earlier this week.

Unexpectedly, Gee was hospitalized during the All Star break to clear a blood clot in his right shoulder and it was determined he needs surgery to replace a portion of damaged artery in that right shoulder.

Who exactly will replace him in the lineup is open to debate but it is clear that the Mets need to give their team a reliable starter in that slot to keep their post-season hopes alive.

Mets Manager Terry Collins said Miguel Batista is the most likely candidate to take the spot but he wouldn’t completely rule out the possibility of recalling a pitcher from AAA. The name on everyone’s list of course is 2010 1st Round Draft Choice and blue chip NY Mets prospect Matt Harvey.

For AAA Buffalo, Harvey has a 7-4 record to go along with an ERA or 3.39 thus far this season. Decent numbers for sure and he’s even made the International League all stars but the question is, would recalling him this early in his career be a help or hindrance to his long term development? The Mets cannot afford to rush him to the big leagues only to shatter his confidence should he be overwhelmed by big league hitters. He should be brought along at his pace, not accelerated just to fill a need for the big club because in the long run, the Mets need him to maximize his potential. If that means the team goes out and trades off other assets in order to acquire a pitcher who can right help, then so be it. It is a delicate balance that teams walk when dealing with the top prospects in the organization. One false move could turn a future stud into a career-long dud.

Despite the concern over the starting rotation, the New York Mets are entering the 2nd half of the season on a mission to keep the team rolling. With a record of 46-40 and just 4.5 games out of first place, the Mets are challenging for the National League East lead and with a strong second half, could finish in first place this season.

Be there at Citi Field for the race to the pennant, find NY Mets tickets for all home games today.

Due to overwhelming demand to see him in concert, Jay-Z has added two more shows to his run at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Barclays Center is the newest venue in the New York area and will be home to the Brooklyn Nets once the NBA season opens. A number of concerts have already been scheduled and announced and there will only be more and more great shows coming to Brooklyn now that there’s a venue to support them.

As of right now, Jay-Z will perform five concerts. The first ever Barclays Center concert will be Jay-Z on September 28, followed by two more shows on September 29 & 30.

The two shows added earlier today are scheduled for October 4th and 5th.

The demand for Jay-Z tickets proved to be too much so they were forced to add two more concerts to accomodate his legion of fans.

The New Jersey Devils had a tremendous run to the Stanley Cup Finals this season before losing in 6 games to the Los Angeles Kings.

Once the season ended, fans circled July 1 on their calendars because they knew the team had some significant players set to hit Free Agency on that date, namely Martin Brodeur and Zach Parise.

In a surprise move, Brodeur hired an agent for the first time in over 15 years which led fans to believe he could leave town.

In the end, Brodeur fielded offers but came back to the only team he’s ever played for. The Devils locked him up for two years at $4.5M each season.

The Devils were not as fortunate with Parise, however. Reportedly having received interest from 20 teams and offers from upwards of 16 teams, Parise chose to accept a lucrative 13-year $98 million offer from his home state’s Minnesota Wild. Also signing with the Wild, to an identical contract, was former Nashville Predator defenseman Ryan Suter.

Now the Devils will be looking to replace the offense lost due to Parise leaving. There are several options available to them.

The best offensive free agent forward still unsigned is Alexander Semin. Other options would be to replace the offense by adding a few forwards, perhaps Shane Doan as well as Semin. Or they could explore the trade route. Everyone knows Rich Nash is available and there are rumors that Cherry Hill, NJ native Bobby Ryan could be had from the Anaheim Ducks. That could be a prime target for the Devils to pursue.

In any event, the Devils will address the problem and the rest of their team which reached the finals remains largely intact so fans can expect their New Jersey Devils tickets to be as popular as ever once the 2012-2013 season gets underway.

Sports Illustrated is reporting that the New York Mets are exploring the possibility of re-acquiring former reliever Francisco Rodriguez.

“K-Rod”, as he is known, was arrested after an altercation with his father-in-law at Citi Field during his tenure as a New York Met, fans may recall.

Rodriguez is currently pitching for the Milwaukee Brewers and struggling somewhat thus far this season with a record of 1-4 with a 4.00 ERA in 39 appearances this season.

In an unexpected turn of events, the Mets find themselves 3.5 games in back of Washington in the National League East as they near the mid-point of the season and adding a veteran pitcher such as Rodriguez may help them take hold of first place and carry them into the playoffs, or at perhaps challenge for a wild card spot if they do not win the division.

With low expectations entering this season, it is a great story that the Mets are even considering moves for a playoff run. That is part of what makes baseball, and really all sports, so exciting — you really never know what is going to happen.

With half a season remaining there is still time to buy Mets tickets and check them out at Citi Field as they look to reach the postseason.
