New Jersey Devils Earn No. 2 Playoff Seed

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

When the New Jersey Devils won Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres they also earned the number two playoff seed in the Eastern Conference. The game was tied with three seconds left in regulation and Jamie Langenbrunner took a pass from Zach Parise. Langenbrunner then turned that pass into the game winning goal.

In order for the Sabres to have attained the number two seed they needed to win this game in regulation time. Since this was the case, they wanted an extra skater on the ice to increase their chances of scoring a goal. They pulled Patick Lalime, their goalie, with 10 seconds to go, but that plan fell flat when Langenbrunner scored on an empty net in the last few seconds of the game.

The NHL’s most winningest goalie, Martin Brodeur stopped 22 shots, but it only took one goal for him to earn his fifth William M. Jennings Trophy for fewest goals allowed. In fact this season New Jersey only gave up 191 goals this season, which is an NHL low.

The New Jersey Devils will face the seventh-seed Philadelphia Flyers in the first round of the playoffs. The Flyers are New Jersey’s long time rivals, and have beat them in five out of six games during this season.

Hurricanes Will Host 2011 NHL All-Star Game

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

The 2011 All-Star Weekend festivities will be held in Raleigh, North Carolina. The National Hockey League announced on Thursday that Carolina will be the next host for NHL All-Star Weekend 2011, including the main event: the NHL All-Star Game. The game will be held at the home of the Hurricanes in the RBC Center.

However, the Hurricanes were not always supposed to host the 2011 All-Star Game. The Phoenix Coyotes were initially chosen to be the hosts of next year’s game, but due to the Coyote’s financial situation the bidding was opened once again. A NHL Commissioner promised Carolina an All-Star game if they could get their season-ticket sales to 12,000. This deal was made back in 2001, and once the Hurricanes fulfilled this requirement it took some time for the commissioner followed through with his promise.

Although the NHL All-Star Game is the main event of the weekend, there are other festivities for hockey fans to be engaged in. The weekend also includes the Young Guns Hockey Game where hockey’s best young stars will be featured, as well as a Skills Competition that you do not want to miss.

All-Star Weekend is among the most exciting NHL events all season. The game’s brightest stars will compete with, and against each other. Tickets are not on sale yet, but you can sign up to be alerted when they are available.

Rangers Win, Enhance Playoff Chances

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Earlier this week the New York Rangers lost to a very strong team, the Buffalo Sabres. One day later they played an opponent who would provide the Rangers with a more equal matchup. The Rangers ended up blowing the Toronto Maple Leafs off of the ice by beating them 5-1 on Wednesday.

This win was clutch for New York as it enhanced their chances to enter the playoffs. The Rangers now have 84 points, and find themselves in ninth place. They only trail eighth-place Boston by one point, and they are two behind Philadelphia who is in seventh-place.

The journey to the playoffs for the Rangers has been a rough one. Considering they had lost eight out of 12 games before going into the Olympic break, the chances of the blueshirts actually entering the postseason was very unlikely.

The Rangers only need to do one thing now to be a part of the postseason, and that is to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers in both games. The New York Rangers will be given their first opportunity at victory on Friday, April 9 when they suit up and hit the ice in Philadelphia.

New York Jets and New York Giants Host New Stadium’s Opening Game

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

The New York Jets and the New York Giants will meet on August 16, 2010 as they both host the opening game at the new Meadowlands stadium. The NFL changed the original preseason schedule to allow this game to be the opening one for each of the two teams as they wished. Considering it is the The Jets’ turn to be the host in this rivalry, they will be the home team at their 42nd meeting ever in a preseason game.

Giants Stadium has been considered home to the Giants since 1976. The Jets moved in 8 years later in 1984 and became a new tenant. This new stadium will stop the Jets from feeling like a second rate team because the two teams will share a 50/50 partnership. It will be the only stadium that is shared by two teams, as was the old Giants Stadium.

The Giants and Jets flipped a coin to see who would open their regular season first. The Giants won, and will play their first regular season game on September 12. The Jets will open at the new Meadowlands stadium on the following Monday. However, in August you can experience the inaugural game between the two occupants of the new Meadowlands stadium. This is a once in a lifetime chance that you do not want to miss out on!

Eskendereya, Kentucky Derby Favorite

Monday, April 5th, 2010

The winner of the Wood Memorial horse race on Saturday was Eskendereya, and after this impressive win this horse is likely to be a favorite in the 2010 Kentucky Derby. Ridden by John Velazquez, Eskendereya’s made it clear that he is the horse to beat at the Derby considering that this was his second win by a significant margin in a row.

It seems as though Eskendereya may be his trainer’s first real shot at winning the Kentucky Derby. Todd Pletcher has won practically every race, but is 0-24 at the Derby and cannot seem to claim victory.

The Kentucky Derby in May is 1 1/4 miles, and has a 20-horse limit that Eskendereya has more than qualified for. It is clear that this horse is the top contender. Eskendereya is joined by another standout named Lookin At Lucky who finished in third on Saturday at the Santa Anita Derby. Despite this, Eskendereya will still remain the number one choice for the Derby.

The 2010 Kentucky Derby will be held on Saturday May 1, 2010, and you can experience Eskendereya’s and the other horses race for the win in person.

Tiger Woods Returns to Action at The Masters

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

The Masters Golf Tournament is being held this week in Augusta, GA, and this year will be very different from the previous ones. On March 16, Tiger Woods announced that he will be returning to the competition after a slew of his bad choices were made public when he hit a fire hydrant in November of 2009.

Although he has excellent focus on the golf course, the big question on everyone’s mind is how the fans will react to Tiger’s return after his scandalous behavior was exposed. On March 21 Tiger himself even told ESPN that he is “a little nervous about that…”

Although he is a four-time Masters champion, I would be a little nervous if I were Tiger as well. As details keep surfacing from his reported affairs, golf fans, and even the general public, will continue to lose more and more respect for Tiger. The public’s view has completely changed from his behavior, and he may be bound to experience things which he has never experienced before from fans such as being booed. This could possibly have a significant effect on Tiger’s focus and performance

The Masters Golf Tournament will be held at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, GA from Sunday, April 4 to Sunday April 11. Don’t miss your chance to see Tiger’s return to a major golf championship.
