Spider-Man the Musical Loses It’s Mary Jane

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Among the many problems delaying the opening of the Broadway musical, “Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark” is yet another hindrance. This time the actress set to play Mary Jane has dropped out. In a statement made by the producers of “Spider-Man” they said that Evan Rachel Wood dropped out of the musical due to a scheduling conflict.

Just 15 months after the announcement was made that she would be starring as Mary Jane, Wood made her departure public. The statement made by the producer, Michael Cohl, made it clear that Evan Rachel Wood was not required to stay with the musical, and that a search for a new Mary Jane was in progress. He also announced that the opening of the show would be delayed until later this year.

The creators and producers of “Spider-Man” have began to worry that other cast and crew members would also be taking on other projects and would therefore drop out of the musical. Cast members include Reeve Carney, who is set to star as Peter Parker and his alter ego, Spider-Man, and Tony Award winner Alan Cumming.

No dates have been set for rehearsals, preview performances, or an opening night. But you can sign up to be alerted when tickets are on sale.

New York Yankees Opening Day 2010

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Baseball’s big 2010 Opening Day is less than one month away. Spring training is already underway in order to prepare the New York Yankees for their 2010 return to the field.

Opening Day is always a big event for every baseball team, but this year is particularly special for the Yankees. This is the first home game after winning last years’ World Series Championship. This season also marks the final season of Derek Jeter’s contract with New York.

Fans of the Yankees are hoping on back to back World Series Titles, and in early February the co-chairman of the Yankees spoke highly of their chances. Hank Steinbrenner said this strong sense of belief came from the changes to the roster in the offseason.

The New York Yankees baseball franchise has been providing fans with amazing ball games since 1923. With 27 World Series Championships to their name, the Yankees are now known as the most successful team in baseball history.

The New York Yankees will have their opening day game on April 13, 2010 at Yankee Stadium against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Weather Brings Decline in Broadway Ticket Sales

Monday, March 8th, 2010

The last week in February made for a slow week at many Broadway box offices. The New York City area has experienced many heavy snowstorms this winter which made ticket sales decline for many musicals and plays on the stages of Broadway.

Many plays in previews such as “Looped,”and “Next Fall,” had a slow week in sales. Some of the Major musicals experienced a drop of 30% or more in their weekly box office grosses. “West Side Story,” “Mamma Mia!,” “The Lion King,” and “Chicago” were a few out of the many musicals that were affected by the harsh snow storms in the NYC area.

However, there was one musical that did actually do well at the box offices. “A Little Night Music” is a musical revival which had a return from its star, Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Broadway’s slow end to February grossed a total of 14.2 million as opposed to the $17.8 million grossed the week before.

Now that the snow storms are over, it is your chance to come enjoy the beautiful New York City weather and see a Broadway play such as Phantom of the Opera, Jersey Boys, American Idiot, Wicked, and more!

Devils Return from Olympic Break With a Win

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

After a two week Olympic break the New Jersey Devils returned to the ice with a victory. On Tuesday night the Devils beat the San Jose Sharks 4-3. The game featured a total of 13 players who participated in the Olympic games, three of which were from the devils.

The Devils’ captain, Jamie Langenbrunner was a part of the USA silver medal winning team as was Zach Parise. In the first quarter of Tuesday’s game Parise was praised during a video tribute to all olympians because he scored the tying goal in the last minute of Canada’s win over USA. New Jersey’s goalie, Martin Brodeur also played in the Olympics, and earned the gold medal while playing on the Canadian team.

In the first game after the Olympics, Zach Parise made two assists, and his teammate Jamie Langenbrunner made one assist as well. In the beginning of the game Martin Brodeur barely even got a chance to show his stuff. The Sharks were unable to get past Brodeur until the third period where they made three goals in under three minutes. But those three goals were not enough to surpass the Devils.

The New Jersey Devils will suit up and hit the ice up next on Friday, March 5, 2010 against the Calgary Flames.

Barnum’s Funundrum at MSG and Izod Center

Monday, March 1st, 2010

The Ringling Bros Circus is coming to town and is presenting the show Barnum’s Funundrum! This show is to celebrate P.T. Barnum, a showman and entertainer who founded the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and the 200th anniversary of his birth.

This once in a lifetime show will feature over 100 performers for you to be amazed by. Along with cowboys, mermaids, and pirates you can also be mystified by the Sky High Ice Gliders on the high wire. They do splits and flips, and even walk with their partner balancing on their head while using their acrobatic skills.

Another thing you will see in this circus is the Spherical Miracle where seven motorcyclists drive around inside a 16-foot diameter globe with speeds up to 65 mph. You will also see intricate flying trapeze moves brought to you by the Flying Caceres. There’s no doubt that you will be amazed by Mighty Meetal, the strongest man when he lifts over 1,2000 pounds. Other things you will see include a two tiered trampoline, amazing contortionists who are able to fit 3 bodies into a cube that is the size of a milk crate, and also hand balancers.

This massive spectacle will also feature many exotic animals that you won’t find elsewhere. Some of these animals include llamas, ponies, horses, tigers, and more. The amount of Asian elephants in Barnum’s Funundrum is more than most other North American circuses.

The Ringling Bros Circus will be at the Izod Center and Madison Square Garden. The Barnum’s Funundrum show will be at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, NJ on March 10, 2010 through March 14, 2010. You can also see this amazing circus show at Madison Square Garden in New York City beginning March 25, 2010 through April 4, 2010.
