Hank Steinbrenner Believes Yankees Can Do It Again

Monday, February 8th, 2010

The New York Yankees co-chairman, Hank Steinbrenner, believes that the Yankees may be on their way to another World Series Championship this year. In Tampa, Florida on Thursday Steinbrenner spoke very highly of the Yankees’ general manager, Brian Chashman, and the players he added to the team during the offseason. He gained a strong sense of belief in the Yankees after they added outfielder Curtis Granderson and pitcher Javier Vazquez to their roster.

Center fielder, Curtis Granderson was obtained from the Detroit Tigers. He was a 2009 American League All-Star, and will be playing at center field where Melky Cabrera once played. Cabrera was sent to the Braves in the trade made by Brian Cashman, which included the Yankees aqcuiring Javier Vazquez.

From the Atlanta Braves, Javier Vazquez joined the team and was added to the pitching rotation for the Yankees which includes CC Sabathia, Andy Pettitte, A.J. Burnett, and a fifth starter who has not been decided yet. New York is hoping that Vazquez will keep them from needing to rely on a three-man rotation like they needed to in the postseason and the World Series.

The Yankees also made other additions during the off season. They added outfielder Randy Winn, and designated hitter Nick Johnson, but also said goodbye to some great players such as Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon.

New Jersey Devils Trade With Atlanta Thrashers

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

In a trade made with the Atlanta Thrashers on Thursday night, the New Jersey Devils have added Ilya Kovalchuk to their roster. He will be a good addition to the Devils, who have recently had a tough time scoring goals. Kovalchuk has played in 49 games this season for the Thrashers, and with 31 goals and 27 assists he has become Atlanta’s leading scorer.

In addition, they have also acquired defenseman Anssi Salmela, who they traded in March of last year for Niclas Havelid and Myles Stoesz. Salmela played in 17 games of the Devils’ last season and had no goals and only 3 assists. During his 29 games he played for the Thrashers he had one goal and four assists.

In the trade, the Devils are going to give up three players. The first is Niclas Bergfors, a rookie winger. The second is Patrice Cormier, who is on suspension for the rest of the season for his hit to Mikael Tam. The third player that New Jersey will give up is defensemen Johnny Oduya. Along with these three players, the Thrashers will be receiving an unspecified draft pick.

The New Jersey Devils will play their next game against their rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers, at the Wachovia Center on February 8, 2010.

Will Dwight Freeney Play in Super Bowl XLIV?

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

As the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts take the field on Sunday, many NFL fans will be curious to see if Dwight Freeney of the Colts will be playing in the Super Bowl.

On Sunday night the colts were describing the defensive end’s injury to his lower ankle just a sprain, but ESPN described him as having torn ankle ligaments. They also made it clear that it is a serious injury and may keep Dwight Freeney out of the Super Bowl. In any case, he will most likely be sitting out for the major practices leading up to the big game.

A sports injury expert named Will Carroll explained that if the injury is a Grade 3 ligament injury that means the ligaments in his ankle are 50% torn or more. He suspects that injury won’t heal quickly enough since it occurred not long ago, towards the ending of the AFC Championship Game. However, he also mentioned that he couldn’t imagine Freeney not playing.

Super Bowl XLIV will be played on Sunday February 7, 2010 at the Sun Life Stadium (formerly Dolphin Stadium) in Miami, Florida. See for yourself in person if Dwight Freeney’s injury will be enough to keep him out of the biggest NFL game of the year.

New Jersey Nets May Move to Newark

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

The New Jersey Nets have been playing at the Meadowlands for 29 years since it opened in 1981. Now that the Meadowlands will be undergoing a $1.6 billion renovation, the Nets will need a new place to call home.

The New Jersey Nets are scheduled to move to Brooklyn in 2012, but they may be moving to the Prudential Center in Newark for their next two seasons. In October the New Jersey Nets played two games in Newark that brought in an average of 14,255 fans. At the Meadowlands the Nets are currently averaging 13,302 fans out of 22 home games.

Because of the Nets’ situation, the New Jersey Devils have reached a preliminary agreement with the team which allows the basketball franchise to play their home games, and be co-tenants with the Devils, at the Prudential Center. The agreement was made last week,  is expected to be signed this week, and is hoped to be approved by Governor Chris Christie shortly after.

The Nets would have to break their lease at the Meadowlands, which would normally result in a reported $7.5 million penalty. However, under this agreement the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority would waive the penalty against the Nets.

The New Jersey Nets will play their next game in Boston against the Celtics on Friday, February 5, 2010 at 7:30 ET.

Christopher Higgins and Ales Kotalik Sent to Calgary

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Late Monday night a trade was made between the New York Rangers and the Calgary Flames. The deal was completed after the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Flames 3-0 where questions of whether Olli Jokinen would continue his time with Calgary.

The trade sent the Rangers’ left winger Christopher Higgins and right winger Ales Kotalik to the Flames in exchange for center Olli Jokinen and left winger Brandon Prust. Kotalik, Higgins, and Jokinen are all experiencing bad seasons, but this trade gives them opportunities for fresh starts. The Rangers are hoping that their new center, Olli Jokinen, will be a great asset to NHL star, Marian Gaborik.

Out of Christopher Higgins’ 55 games with the Rangers, he only had six goals and a mere eight assists. Although Higgins was previously a first round pick from Yale, this is the second time in less than a year he has been traded.

In July Ales Kotalik signed a $9 million deal with the Rangers that was was supposed to last for three years. What the Rangers got was not what they were expecting. Instead of a power-play specialist, and a top player they received a team member who started off great, scoring six times in his first 17 games, but only managed to score twice after. Shortly after, head coach John Tortella sent Kotalik to the benches.

The New York Rangers will play their next game in Los Angeles against the Kings on Tuesday, February 2, 2010.
