Billy Elliot the Musical

In 2008 Billy Elliot the Musical came to the Broadway stage at the Imperial Theatre in New York City. According to Eric Fellner, the producer of the musical, the musical has made back their $18 million production costs, and has now turned to profit in just 14 months.

Billy Elliot the Musical is based on the British feature film from 2000. It comes to life on stage with help from musical legend, Sir Elton John, who wrote a brand new book and lyrics for the Broadway version of Billy Elliot.

The musical is about an 11 year old boy named Billy Elliot. The boy is a poor child growing up in a fictional northern town outside of London without a mother. The story takes place in 1984 during the Coal riots. Although his father would like him to take up boxing, Billy has no interest in doing so, and in addition he has no talent for the sport. Billy has a different plan. His dream is to use his mother’s love of music through dancing. He secretly takes dance class at the Royal Ballet School in London and hopes to make his dreams of becoming a dancer come true.
