NHL Winter Classic
The 2010 Winter Classic was the NHL’s 3rd annual Winter Classic, and was held on New Year’s Day at the historical Fenway Park in front of a crowd of 38,112 fans. It featured the matchup between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Boston Bruins.
The Philadelphia Flyers fell short of the Bruins in overtime to leave the score at 2-1. With this victory, the Bruins became the first home teame ever to win the NHL winter classic.
The first period left both teams scoreless at 0-0. During the second period, Danny Syvret of the Flyers scored the first goal for the Flyers. This was also the first goal of his NHL career. The Flyers held their lead with just 2:18 to go in the 3rd period when Former Flyer, Mark Recchi, tied the game.
With 3 minute remaining in overtime, Marco Sturm made a shot past Michael Leighton into the net to give Boston the win in overtime.
The 2011 NHL Winter Classic teams have yet to be announced by the NHL, but some NHL fans think that it will feature the New York Rangers vs. the Washington Capitals.
