On Saturday night the New York Red Bulls lost 1-0 to the San Jose Earthquakes. They suffered this defeat at Buck Shaw Stadium in front of a sellout crowd of 10,525. The loss for the Red Bulls gives them a winless streak of 4 games and drops the team to a league worst of 4-18-6. On a more positive note, the Red Bulls have only given up 4 goals in their last 5 games.

The New York Red Bulls have their final game of the season, and their final game at Giants Stadium on Saturday, October 24 against Toronto FC. This game is also Fan Appreciation Day.

Eli Manning Injured

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

The undefeated New York Giants will return home on Sunday, October 11 against the Oakland Raiders after winning 3 games on the road. The real question is… will Eli Manning be with them when they do?

The 4-0 New York Giants had another easy win on Sunday over the 0-4 Kansas City Chiefs but it was overshadowed by Manning’s injury during the game. It was a non-contact injury that occurred with about 13 minutes left in the game when he attempted to throw a pass to Giants receiver, Steve Smith. As he planted his foot he hopped a little, stepped to throw, and after he released the ball he immediately dropped to the ground.

After the injury, Manning did stay in for one more play which was a short pass to Hakeem Nicks who was successfully able to turn that short pass into a 54-yard touchdown. At that point, the Giants were up 27-3 so the coaches pulled him from the game and the trainers began taping his foot.

Manning said he did not think that the injury was “awful,” and initially was not intending on missing Sunday’s game against the Raiders, but he said he would refrain from playing if he couldn’t play adequately or if it could make the injury worse. Also, Giants Coach Tom Coughlin made it known that they are being cautious with the injury.

New York Jets Lose to New Orleans Saints, 24-10

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

On Sunday, October 4 the New York Jets suffered their first loss of the season to the New Orleans Saints at The Louisiana Superdome. Heading into this game, the Jets were among only seven undefeated teams in the entire NFL. The Saints were also one of those seven teams.

The New York Jets’ defense got in the way of the Saints offense more than any other oponenent during this season so far. They stopped the Saints on 4th and 1 opportunities 2 times during Sunday’s game. They also held the Saints back in 9 third-down situations. They were able to limit the Saints to a season low of only 343 yards

The Saints used four Jets’ turnovers to their advantage to take the victory. Much of the blame for the team’s first loss of the season could be placed on Jets rookie quarterback and former USC star, Mark Sanchez. He lost the football in the Jets’ end zone which led to another score by New Orleans. He threw 3 interceptions and of them one was returned for a 99-yard touchdown.

The Jets’ 24-10 loss to the Saints leaves the team with 3 wins and 1 loss as they prepare for their next game against the Miami Dolphins on October 12.

Brendan Shanahan Leaves New Jersey Devils

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Brendan Shanahan, a veteran right wing for the New Jersey Devils, said on Thursday that he will not be playing with the team this season. This would have been his 22nd NHL season. On Wednesday, he was informed that he would not be a part of the Devil’s top three lines, and left the team the following day.

In a statement Shanahan said, “When I signed this past summer… I agreed that if we were unable to find a suitable fit in which I would be able to compete and contribute at the level I expect from myself, then I would simply step aside.”

He said that the decision was reached with the devils amicably and mutually. Lou Lamoriello, the Devils’s general manager has not ruled out the possibility of Shanahan coming back to the team later in the season, and of course he may even end up playing for another team.

Shanahan began his Devils career after being the number 2 overall pick in the 1987 draft. He has 656 career goals, which puts him 11th on the NHL list. He is 23rd in career points with 1,354 points under his belt.

The Devils may have lost their season opener to the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 on Saturday, but now they are getting ready to play their next game against the New York Rangers on October 5 at 7 p.m.

New York Rangers Season Opener This Friday

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

On Friday, The New York Rangers will open their season against the 2008-2009 Stanley Cup Winners, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Rangers will have their home opener at Madison Square Garden on Saturday against the Ottawa Senators.

The Rangers have successfully made it to the playoffs for the past 4 seasons, but they have not been able to make it past the 2nd round. With all the changes that were made in the off season, the New York Rangers hope to change that pattern this year.

Scott Gomez was signed to the Rangers 2 years ago, but he did not perform as expected, so the team sent him off to Montreal. They were able to acquire left winger Chris Higgins who is expected to total 50-60 points throughout the season.

Another addition to the team is Vinny Prospal, a former Tampa Bay left winger. He has proven that he is a powerful threat in the offensive zone as he has played well in the preseason.

Glen Sather, the general manager, signed the 27 year old Slovakian, Marian Gaborik. Since he is top notch talent in the NHL, the Rangers are hoping that he can remain healthy, which is something that doesn’t come easy to Gaborik. For the past 5 seasons he has battled groin injuries, and appeared in only 17 games last season due to a hip injury.
