On Friday, The New York Rangers will open their season against the 2008-2009 Stanley Cup Winners, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Rangers will have their home opener at Madison Square Garden on Saturday against the Ottawa Senators.
The Rangers have successfully made it to the playoffs for the past 4 seasons, but they have not been able to make it past the 2nd round. With all the changes that were made in the off season, the New York Rangers hope to change that pattern this year.
Scott Gomez was signed to the Rangers 2 years ago, but he did not perform as expected, so the team sent him off to Montreal. They were able to acquire left winger Chris Higgins who is expected to total 50-60 points throughout the season.
Another addition to the team is Vinny Prospal, a former Tampa Bay left winger. He has proven that he is a powerful threat in the offensive zone as he has played well in the preseason.
Glen Sather, the general manager, signed the 27 year old Slovakian, Marian Gaborik. Since he is top notch talent in the NHL, the Rangers are hoping that he can remain healthy, which is something that doesn’t come easy to Gaborik. For the past 5 seasons he has battled groin injuries, and appeared in only 17 games last season due to a hip injury.
