New York Yankees Sweep ALDS

The New York Yankees finished off their sweep of the Minnesota Twins on Sunday, October 11 and are another step closer to winning their 27th World Series title. This 4-1 victory over the Twins was their first playoff series win in 5 years. The 4-1 win for the Yankees was game 3 in the AL Division Series, and was also the final major league game to be played inside of the Metrodome before the Twins move to Target Field next season.

The Yankees were scoreless until the 7th inning when they were able to overcome strong pitching by former teammate Carl Pavano. Home runs by Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada took the first steps to the 4-1 victory over the Twins. Mariano Rivera ended the Twins’ season with the final four outs of the game and closed out Andy Pettitte’s 15th career postseason win.

For the first time since 2004, thanks to the three-game sweep against the Twins, the New York Yankees are now in the American League Championship Series. On Friday, October 16 the Yankees will play the Los Angeles Angels at Yankee Stadium to begin a best-of-seven set. This season the Yankees were 5-5 against the Angels, but in 2002 and 2005 the Angels were the team that eliminated the Yankees from the road to the World Series.
