Derek Jeter Swings Away at New Record

With just 4 more hits New York Yankees captain, Derek Jeter, will pass Lou Gehrig for the most hits in the Yankees’ history. He’s getting there very quick too! In just the past 26 games he had 44 hits. He’s not wasting any time!

After 17 seasons, Lou Gehrig had a record of 2,721 hits with the New York Yankees just before his illness related retirement at age 35. Gehrig has held this record for 70 years.

On Saturday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, New York fans cheered as Derek Jeter swung closer to breaking the record. In the New York Yankees 6-4 win over the Blue Jays, Jeter hit 2 singles bringing his record to 2,715 hits. That leaves him just 7 hits short of breaking the record.

On Monday, Derek Jeter has an excellent chance to break Gehrig’s mark in becoming the all time hitter when the New York Yankees return home to start their series against the Tampa Bay Rays with a double header. On this day, history could be made in New York at the New Yankee Stadium.
