The New York Giants won their first preseason game of the year against the Carolina Panthers at Giants Stadium, 24-17.
The game looked as though it was headed for overtime when the Carolina Panthers tied it with a touchdown, and a two-point conversion with 57 seconds remaining. The Carolina Panthers got the ball at their own 18 with 10 seconds left, Cantwell went back to pass when Leger Douzable rushed past the guard and knocked the ball out of the quarterback’s arm. The ball popped in the air, and Hill got a hold of it and continued to return the fumble 18 yards for the game-winning touchdown.
There were positives and negatives for both teams in the preseason opener.
-The NFC East champion New York Giants forced five turnovers and got a touchdown drive from quarterback Eli Manning in one of his two series.
-Brandon Jacobs rushed four times for 31 yards and Ahmad Bradshaw rushed five times for 35 yards.
-Eli Manning threw only three passes, completing two of them for 31 yards.
-The New York Giants defense held the Carolina Panthers to 91 total yards in the first half.
-The New York Giants sacked the Carolina Panthers quarterbacks four times.
-The Carolina Panthers sacked the New York Giants quarterbacks five times, got a safety on a punt block by linebacker James Anderson, and a 14-yard touchdown run by backup halfback Mike Goodson.
The New York Giants return to Albany for practice Wednesday and Thursday in preparation for their next game against the Chicago Bears on Saturday.
