Yankees Take on Hairston at Deadline
In years past, the Yankees have made waves at trade deadline, helping make their team better, and better still. But this year, they sat idly by and watched as the deadline crept up – with seemingly no intentions of making any moves until an 11th hour trade with Cincinnati broke their silence and added a complementary player to their roster as the playoffs approach.
The Yankees closed a deal late on Friday that sent utility player Jerry Hairston, Jr, from the Reds for minor league catcher Chase Weems. This trade was the only move made by the Yanks during a heavy day of deadline trading.
“I’m happy with the effort made and feel real good about this club,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. “You always want to try and make it better if possible, but unfortunately we just never found anything that made that possible, other than the move we made.”
The acquisition of the 33 year old will help bolster the Yankees bench by providing experience, offensive proficiency, and defensive versatility. With Hairston’s help, the Yankees are hoping to make a return to the playoffs this year. Snag some Yankees tickets and find out if they have the right stuff.
