Mets Win First of ’09
One game played, one game won. For the Mets, 2009 got off to a good start as the Mets were able to outlast the Reds for a 2-1 win on opening day. Johan Santana was brilliant in his first start with the Mets, while newly acquired Francisco Rodriguez did what he does, recording his first save of the year, after setting a single-season record in 2008.
Because of the great pitching from New York, they only need two runs to close the door on Cincinnati, and those came courtesy of a two-run homer by rookie, Daniel Murphy. Whose third inning two-run bomb provided the Mets with all they needed for win #1.
Obviously, it’s a long season, but if you were to ask any of the New York Mets Mets organization – or any Mets ticket holders, for that matter- if they’d rather win or lose, their first game, they’d tell you they are perfectly happy with the results of opening day.
