Broadway is Recession-Proof
Despite the tumbling profits of industries nation-wide, several sectors of the entertainment industry are managing to hang on and even thrive under the heavy recession that is causing some other sectors to balk and even fold.
One of these entertainment sectors is Broadway, where apparently New Yorkers are flocking in order to escape the daily grind and the troubles of the recession. Back in January, it was being reported that a record number of Broadway shows were closing due to the looming recession and producers were pulling the plug, rather than taking the chance of seeing red in ’09.
But that was then. This week it was reported that Broadway grosses are holding their own and some shows -notably the revival of “West Side Story” – are doing $1 million a week even in previews. However, the growth spurt seems to be mostly centered on non-musicals, as very few musicals in even in production – probably because of the high cost of producing them.
There are also a huge list of notable TV and film cross-over stars who are starring on Broadway – which could also be a huge reason for the growing numbers.
Whatever the reasons, Broadway is growing despite the recession, so if you are looking for an escape, grab some Broadway tickets and join the fun!
