Did You See “The Boss” at the Super Bowl?

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Despite being the highest rated Super Bowl of all time, as well as certainly being one of the most entertaining in the history of the game, there’s no doubt that one of the highlights of the night was the halftime show that starred Bruce Springsteen.

“The Boss” took the stage in front of a raucous crowd of more than 70,000 for the half time show of a life time, and he definitely did not disappoint. His “12 Minute Party” setlist consisted of:

  • Tenth Avenue Freezeout
  • Born to Run
  • Working on a Dream
  • Glory Days

It was a great show, and you can easily find it online, if you missed out on it on Super Bowl Sunday. Additionally, you can grab Bruce Springsteen tickets and see him on tour in a city near you! At 59, it’s hard to imagine Springsteen continuing to tour for many more years, so there’s no time like the present!

NFC Takes Pro Bowl Win

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Larry Fitzgerald may not have won the Super Bowl despite his huge performance, but his repeat performance in the Pro Bowl at least gave him something to celebrate.

The NFC took the Pro Bowl behind Fitzgerald’s two-touchdown performance, as well as Drew Brees’ 142 output. Meanwhile, for the AFC, Peyton Manning’s 151 yards and Kerry Collins’ 108 helped lead the AFC. It was the AFC who began the scoring, as Tony Gonzalez scored on a 19 yard pass from Manning, followed by a 9-yard TD from Collins to Owen Daniels.

The first half ended with Larry Fitzgerald scampering for a 46 yard TD from Drew Brees, while John Carney added a FG for the NFC in the first half.

In the Second half, Adrian Peterson led things off with a 10 yard TD run in the 3rd quarter followed by an answer from the AFC’s Le’Ron McClain whose 5-yard punch in made the score 21-14. Unfortunately for the AFC, the scoring would end there.

Larry Fitzgerald’s second TD came in the fourth quarter and John Carney added two late FGs for the NFC to seal the deal.

If you missed out on this year’s Pro Bowl, start planning now for the 2010 event which is sure to be a blast!

Manning’s Pro Bowl Prank… Oops!

Friday, February 6th, 2009

I’ve seen Indianapolis QB Payton Manning on Saturday Night Live, so I knew he had a good sense of humor… even if he doesn’t always think through his jokes and pranks. A recent story in the Indianoplis Star tells about a prank he and some others pulled on Denver Broncos (and fellow SEC) QB Jay Cutler while in Hawaii for the Pro Bowl.

The story is that Jets center Nick Mangold and Chargers guard Kris Dielman along with Manning, planned to give Cutler a “Pro Bowl Baptism” – meaning he would be thrown into the swimming pool at their resort.

Manning got Cutler’s cell phone, but overlooked another even more important electronic device.

Cutler is a Type 1 diabetic, and his blood-sugar monitor was in his pocket. The monitor didn’t survive the dunking but no harm; Cutler was re-equipped by lunchtime Wednesday.

“It was a bad audible on our part,” Manning said. “I think we were thinking right, trying to get the cell phone. Then we realize, the guy gets insulin shots. We missed that.”

Good to know that even the Mannings are human afterall.

Parcells Can Leave and Take His Money with Him

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

The Miami Dolphins may have made a mistake when they negotiated Bill Parcels contract two years ago. A clause in Tuna’s contract allows him to walk at any point AND keep his full pay. Additionally, if he signed with another organization, the Dolphins would not be entitled to any compensation.

The contractual clause stated that if Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga were to ever sell the team, that Parcels would essentially be an unrestricted free agent, free to walk at any moment. Parcels has said publicly that he is committed to the Dolphins through 2009, but has not made a statement specifically acknowledging his contractual agreement.

I would imagine that Dolphins fans across the country have to be a bit worried, as Parcels has often been noted as being rather short tempered and whimsical. As long as the new ownership treats him well, I would imagine that Dolphins ticket holders would not have too much to worry about, as we know that Tuna loves the game.

Its Pro Bowl Time (Are You Interested?)

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Unlike the NBA and MLB All-Star games, the NFL gets very little publicity and receives very little fanfare (outside of Hawaii, at least). The real honor for the players is to be named to the team, and not playing in the game itself. The two main reasons for the lack of enthusiasm for the NFL’s version of the All-Star game are the location and the timing of the game.

One thing that would make a huge difference in the viewership and enthusiasm surrounding the game would be to rotate it to different cities each year (just like they do in baseball and basketball). This would allow fans in different areas of the country to be a part of the game.

Another thing the NFL could change, is the timing of the game – this one might be harder, though. The mid-season scheduling of the NBA and MLB games give the fans a way to mark the climax of the season. With the NFL, the season is over, and the fans just aren’t as interested.

So, regardless of the cost of Pro Bowl tickets, most fans simply aren’t that into the game and couldn’t get to Honolulu even if they were. Hopefully the NFL will make some changes soon.

Steelers Win, But Not Without a Fight

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

In a game that perhaps exceeded the expectations of most of us, the Pittsburg Steelers outlasted the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl 43 on Sunday. Despite the great play of Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald – particularly late in the game – the Steelers were able to strike last and eventually put out the flames.

It was Ben Roethlisberger’s touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes (and subsequently Holmes’ phenomenal footwork) that gave the Steelers the win. This followed a phenomenal 2-minute drill that drove the Steelers down field to give them a chance in the final minutes.

Fans who were lucky enough to procure Super Bowl tickets were on the edge of their seats in the fourth quarter when Arizona QB Kurt Warner found Larry Fitzgerald over the middle for a 64 yard touchdown to put Arizona up 23-20 with 2:37 left in the game. But much to the credit of Mike Tomlin, the Pittsburgh coaching staff, and the Roethlisberger-Holmes connection, the Steelers closed the deal.

Santonio Holmes was named the Super Bowl 43 MVP, but the award could easily have gone to Roethlisberger, or James Harrison, who’s 100-yard interception return to end the first half set the pace. All-in-all, Super Bowl 43 was one of the best football games of the century, and great way to close out the NFL season!
