Devils Lose as Islanders Try to Climb Out of the Gutter
Going into this weekend’s game the New Jersey Devils were ranked in the top of their division and 5th overall in the NHL, while the New York Islanders were pulling up the rear of the entire league, as well as the division, and the conference. With only 18 wins so far, the Islanders are certainly out of the playoff picture, but for one night, it was the Islanders who celebrated over their rivals.
The Islanders 4-0 win over New Jersey probably didn’t lift the spirits of too many fans, but it did show the teams potential to win big, and also perhaps exposed some of the flaws in the Devils team.
As 15,511 fans looked on, the Islanders struck early as Sean Bergenheim scored a wrist shot at 3:50 in the 1st period as he was assisted by Mark Streit. In the second period (at 8:45), Jon Sim backhanded an unassisted goal to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead.
The third period was all Islanders as well as Kyle Okposo and Bill Guerin both put in slap shots at 16:07 and 17:52, respectively.
The Devils are still the beat in the Atlantic Division, as the Islanders continue sit 20 games out but with just a little bit of pride in their weekend win.
