Mets Use Big Inning to Sink Nationals

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

The Mets offense was on hold during the middle innings of last night’s game against the Nationals, but that didn’t matter at all, as they were able to pound out six runs in the third and four more in the seventh to out-duel Washington 13-10 in Shea Stadium.

What’s more for the Mets is that they didn’t need the long ball to complete their task, as the only home run was a two-run shot from David Wright in the 8th inning. The Mets simply strung together some timely hitting, combined with capitalizing on pitching mistakes and the type of heads-up aggressive base running that you want to see from a team fighting for their playoff spot.

Despite the big outbursts in the 3rd and 7th innings, the game was never in hand as neither starting pitcher left with a decision and the Mets blew a save attempt early on before Joe Smith picked up then win, while Luis Ayala picked up the save in place of an injured Billy Wagner.

The intra-division win was a huge one for the Mets as they now are up by 3.5 games in the division which means that even if they were to be swept in a three-game series, they would still hold on to the division. In a division like this, we won’t know anything for sure until the final days of the season, so grab your Mets tickets and come join the fun!

Yankees Get the Best of MLB’s Best

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

The New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim came into the week with complete opposite viewpoints, as Los Angeles was boasting a Major League best record and trying to creep out a 100-win season, while the Yankees had fallen into fourth place in the division and are just trying to finish the season with a win percentage above .500. Nevertheless, in this great game of baseball, anyone can win on any given night, and the Yankees did just that last night in Los Angeles – and in authoritative fashion.

When all was said and done, the Yankees ended the night with a 7-1 victory and a little bit of pride as they perhaps proved to themselves that they are better than their record insists. They will get another chance tonight as they face-off with the Angels again in Anaheim. Though the teams are very different, there will be many reasons to buy NY Yankees tickets and join in the fun.

The Yankees used the long ball, in part, last night to finish off the Angels, as ARod, teed off a three-run shot in the 6th, while Johnny Damon popped two out in the 7th and 9th innings (one solo and one a two run blast).

Little known Alfredo Aceves was on the hill for the Yankees and collected the win, while one of L.A.’s seemingly endless line of aces, Ervin Santana toed the mound in the losing effort.

Rent: Gone But Not Forgotten

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

After 12 years and more than 5,000 performances, one of Broadway’s most popular and powerful shows has come to an end. Rent, a 1996 Tony Award winner, ended its Broadway run on Sunday with a sold out show and an auditorium full of die-hard “Rentheads” who paid premium prices for their Broadway tickets to see the show for the last time. Their loyalty did not go un rewarded, as the final minutes of the show were highly emotional concluding with appearances by the original cast members on stage to sing “Seasons of Love” on last time.

Rent is a story of love, loss, and struggle during hard times in a Bohemian culture in New York City. Adding controversy to the mix, are storylines that revolve around AIDS, homosexuality, and severe drug use. Despite its controversial nature, the show has been a huge success for its entire run, as its realistic and hard-hitting themes are endured by thousands across the world.

Mixing the drama of the show with the rock n roll soundtrack adds to the popularity of Rent, as people everywhere see the show, sing the songs, and embrace Rent as part of their lives. The final show was dedicated, as was the first showing, to Jonathan Larson, the creator/writer of the show who lived many of the themes of the show and passed away from Marfan syndrome in January of 1996, a mere 3 months before the show’s Broadway premier.

Mariners Take Series as Yankees Fall Further in Division Race

Monday, September 8th, 2008

The Yankees’ woes continued this weekend as they traveled to Seattle to take on the worst team in the majors in the Seattle Mariners. What could have been a great opportunity to bounce back and take a stab at the division, became another stumbling block in their disappointing season as they lost two of three to the Mariners while seeing arch-rival Boston gain two games on Tampa Bay, who are now sitting only 1.5 games above the AL East fray.

What’s worse for the Yankees is that as of right now, they can’t even claim to be the third best team in the AL East as the Toronto Blue Jays have continued their great second-half run to pull just ahead of the Yankees in the division – giving them one more hurdle to surpass if they want to have any chance at the playoffs.

They have also fallen behind the Blue Jays in the Wild Card race, meaning that that avenue is unlikely as well. However, we have seen some crazy finishes in this great game over the years, and you never can count anyone out until that magic number is zero.

Regardless of the outcome of this season , this is the final stretch for “The House that Ruth Built” and NY Yankee tickets are sure to be hot items over the coming three weeks as we get set to say goodbye to a true landmark.

NL West Showdown Begins Tonight

Friday, September 5th, 2008

With three games separating the Phillies and the Mets, a weekend showdown is a huge opportunity for both teams. For Philadelphia, it’s a chance to get back into a tie for the division lead with a sweep of the Mets. For New York, a three game lead could become a six game lead, potentially making a Philly comeback very unlikely.

We’ve seen this before. Remember last season when the Mets had a seven game lead in mid-September only to lose 12 of their last 17 games while Philadelphia stormed back to swipe the playoffs right out of their hands? Many call it the “greatest collapse in MLB history”, but a playoff run or a World Series Championship would likely remove it from our memory after only a season.

Regardless of what happens this weekend, it is unlikely that either of these teams will give up without a fight. The Mets have been revitalized since the mid-season dumping of Willie Randolph and have had their eyes set solidly on the playoffs every since.

Meanwhile, the Phillies what is probably the best NL lineup in the league, with back-to-back league MVPs Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard anchoring a solid team lead by Charlie Manuel. Look for this series to be a down-and-out brawl as both teams know what the stakes are at Shea Stadium. Grab some Mets tickets now and enjoy the action!

Shrek and Billy Elliot – Where Hollywood Meets Broadway

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Coming off of a disappointing summer season, Broadway is looking to rebound this fall with an exciting schedule of new and old shows that are bound to keep fans buying Broadway tickets online in order to be a part of a great Broadway season.

More than 20 years after the 80′s success of Cats, Phantom of the Opera, and Les Miserables – three shows that came over from Europe – another show is opening this year that has all of Broadway excited and interested. Billy Elliot, which has been a huge success overseas, and is already creating quite a buzz – particularly at the box office, is set to open on November 13 at the Imperial Theatre.

Another show that could give Billy Elliot some competition (in name recognition, at least) is Shrek the Musical. The Dreamworks stage adaptation of the popular animated films will debut at the Broadway Theatre on December 14.

There are many great revivals on Broadway this year, as well as some exciting new shows. If you are looking for something fresh and new and exciting, check out Billy Elliot or Shrek the Musical when the open later this fall.

Mets Finish Milwaukee in 10

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

The Milwaukee Brewers would be put away easily yesterday as it took the Mets 10 innings to finally win 6-5. After pushing out to a four run lead in the third inning, the Brewers put up a four spot in the fourth, and the game was tied at fives for the remainder of the regulation game.

In the tenth, however, Daniel Murphy, the Mets Rookie left fielder came in to pinch hit for the pitcher, promptly hitting the game winning single as the Mets closed the door by shutting down the Brewers in the bottom half of the inning.

Carlos Beltran’s 3-run shot in the third inning was the lone homerun for the Mets and provided the majority of their offense throughout regulation. Ricky Meeks had a solo homer, as well, for the Brewers.

Both teams are facing a critical stretch run in September as the Mets look to hold on to a two game advantage in the East, while the Brewers are four games behind the Cubs in the Central. Currently Milwaukee leads the wild card race, trying to stave off Philadelphia whom they lead by 4.5.

The Mets need fan support to continue their run for the playoffs. Grab some Mets tickets and show your support!

Yankees Out-duel Tigers for Labor Day Victory

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Neither starting pitcher lasted very long in yesterday’s Yankees-Tigers game, as New York’s Sidney Ponson was lifted in the fourth, while Detroit’s Justin Verlander threw only 1.3 before getting the hook from Jim Leyland. Nevertheless, the two teams had plenty of offense to go around as the Yankees out-slugged the Tigers for a 13-9 Labor Day win.

There was a little contrast, however, in the way the two teams scored their runs. The Yankees relied primarily on timely hitting (something they have been needing more of lately), while the Tigers used the long ball to their advantage, slugging three home runs in the game to account for more than half of their runs. Brandon Inge, Gary Sheffield, and Miguel Cabrera were responsible, for the homers while Johnny Damon hit the Yankee’s sole long ball.

Both of these teams find themselves in a far different place than they would have expected, as the season enters its final month. The Yankees remain 12 games out of the division lead, while the Tigers find themselves in fourth place in the central by 11 games. As Yogi Berra said, however, “It ain’t over til it’s over”. Grab yourselves some NY Yankees tickets and enjoy the rest of the season, for better or worse.
