NL West Showdown Begins Tonight
With three games separating the Phillies and the Mets, a weekend showdown is a huge opportunity for both teams. For Philadelphia, it’s a chance to get back into a tie for the division lead with a sweep of the Mets. For New York, a three game lead could become a six game lead, potentially making a Philly comeback very unlikely.
We’ve seen this before. Remember last season when the Mets had a seven game lead in mid-September only to lose 12 of their last 17 games while Philadelphia stormed back to swipe the playoffs right out of their hands? Many call it the “greatest collapse in MLB history”, but a playoff run or a World Series Championship would likely remove it from our memory after only a season.
Regardless of what happens this weekend, it is unlikely that either of these teams will give up without a fight. The Mets have been revitalized since the mid-season dumping of Willie Randolph and have had their eyes set solidly on the playoffs every since.
Meanwhile, the Phillies what is probably the best NL lineup in the league, with back-to-back league MVPs Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard anchoring a solid team lead by Charlie Manuel. Look for this series to be a down-and-out brawl as both teams know what the stakes are at Shea Stadium. Grab some Mets tickets now and enjoy the action!
