Yankees Lose Early Lead to Red Sox
Going into Tuesday night’s series opener against Boston, there was a lot of buzz around the division about the Yankees current winning streak, as well as their dire need to continue that streak against the visiting Red Sox. When Johnny Damon led the Yankees off with a solo homerun in the first inning, it seemed that they may be on their way to doing just that.
Much of the speculation revolved around the Yankees need to either sweep or to take the first two games (when the Red Sox pitching would be weakest). The Yankees were unable to hold on to their lead and a two run third and a three run fifth from Boston sealed the Red Sox 7-3 victory.
Johnny Damon went on to hit another home run in the fifth as well, to provide two-thirds of the Yankees offense, while three hits from Coco Crisp, and two RBI from Jason Bay led the way for the Red Sox.
The situation in the AL East is more or less unchanged as Tampa Bay holds the division lead with the Red Sox now 3.5 back and the Yankees standing at a “backs against the wall” disadvantage of 9.5 games back.
This will be an historic series one way or another as this will likely be the last time that the arch-rival Boston Red Sox visit Yankee Stadium. Don’t let anything come in the way of seeing the two most tradition-rich teams go at it one last time in the league’s most tradition-rich ballpark – pick up your NY Yankees tickets today and be a part of the action as Paul Bird and Jon Lester lead the Red Sox against the Yankees’ Sidney Ponson and veteran Mike Mussina.
