NY Yankees All-Star Preview

Monday, July 14th, 2008

The 2008 All-Star game is going to be a very special one for New York Yankees fans. The MLB has decided to send Yankee Stadium out with a bang by choosing to host the All-Star game in the Bronx. In addition to the grand stage being set in “The House that Ruth Built”, several Yankees’ stars are vying to make a splash while helping the A.L. win for the 11th time in a row (they tied in 2002).

Yankee starters include captain and shortstop, Derek Jeter, who the fans voted in despite a less-than-stellar first half. Jeter will be making his ninth appearance in the All-Star game. Joining Derek in the infield will be Alex Rodriguez, who will be making his 12th appearance in the All-Star game, and his ninth in a row.

For the first time in years, the Yankees are without representation on the A.L. bench, as no Yankee players were chosen as backups in the All-Star game. However, veteran closer Mariano Rivera will be making an appearance in the bullpen for the ninth time in his prolific career.

The American League has been unstoppable since the game began to secure home field in the World Series for the winning league. With the A.L. East always wide-open, the Yankees would love another victory and the opportunity for home field advantage should they make the Fall Classic once again.

There are still All-Star game tickets available, as well as plenty of NY Yankees tickets for the second half of the season. This is bound to be a legendary All-Star game, and an exciting season.

Hot Tickets from Select A Ticket

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Welcome back for our weekly installment of Hot Tickets from Select A Ticket. These events are the most popular on www.SelectATicket.com for the previous week.

Let’s get right into the list this week:

South Pacific

Lion King

New York Red Bulls vs Los Angeles Galaxy

Mary Poppins

Mamma Mia!

Once again Broadway Tickets were very popular on www.SelectATicket.com. The only sporting event to crack the list this week was David Beckham’s visit to Giants Stadium as the LA Galaxy take on the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer.

Be sure to return next week to see which events make the list. My guess is we’re going to see MLB All Star Game tickets up close to the top.

Mets Complete Giant Sweep

Friday, July 11th, 2008

After winning the first two games of the series on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Mets closed out their mid-week series with a 7-3 victory over San Francisco in Shea Stadium on Thursday.

The story of the day was Fernando Tatis, who led the way with four RBI, including a homerun and two doubles to accompany John Maine’s two hit performance in which he gave up all three of the Giants runs. The Mets are now riding a six game winning streak – their longest run since 2006.

In addition to the break-out performance by Tatis, David Wright also contributed heavily with two doubles of his own, while scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 7th inning. During the game, Mets ticket holders were persistently reminded by the team public-address announcers to text in their votes for Wright to earn the final N.L. spot on the All-Star roster.

Nevertheless, voting closed shortly after the conclusion of the game, and Milwaukee’s Corey Hart was added to the senior circuit ballot along with Tampa Bay’s Evan Longoria for the American League.

Next up for the Mets is a three-game series in New York against the Colorado Rockies in a matchup of two teams who entered the season with very high expectations that have yet to pan out for either team. This series, leading in to the All-Star break, should be exciting, as the Rockies bring in their explosive offense into Shea Stadium.

Yankees, Red Sox Close in on Rays

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

In a division that will probably be the most intriguing in all of baseball by season’s end, things just got a little more exciting.

Trailing the division-leading Rays going into Wednesday’s afternoon slate, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees were each able to pull out victories to tighten the division race just a little bit more heading into the final weekend before the All-Star Game. The Red Sox saw their bats come alive in an 18-5 thumping of the Twins while the Yanks finished off the two-game sweep of league-leading Rays 2-1.

The Red Sox and Yankees now trail the Rays by two and six-and-a-half games, respectively as Boston takes a day off before facing Baltimore in a three game series while New York faces off with Pittsburgh for a make-up game before challenging Toronto for a weekend series.

The two teams face each other again in two weeks, when the Yankees will venture to Boston for three games that could play a major role in ultimately deciding the division.

If you don’t already have your NY Yankee tickets, don’t hesitate. There’s still a lot of great baseball left to be played and, as usual, this division is sure to go down to the wire.

Changes in Rent 2009 Tour Dates

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

As Rent approaches its final show on Broadway on September 7th, original cast members Anthony Rapp (Mark Cohen) and Adam Pascal(Roger Davis) are preparing for their 2009 Rent tour across America. Tour dates for the shows were originally announced in April, but this past week, some scheduling conflicts were resolved resulting in some cities being left out of the mix.

According to Anthony Rapp’s blog, the dates for the tour’s showings in Chicago have been altered, as well as those for their back-to-back stints in Boston. The unfortunate side effect of these scheduling changes is that the previously-planned shows in Toronto and Atlanta are no longer on the schedule.

Rent may be the greatest of all American musicals and if you have never had the chance to see the show on stage, now is the time to get your Broadway tickets online. If you live outside of the New York area, check out the 2009 Rent tour and take the opportunity to see one of the last performances with two of the original cast members.

Mets Win Shootout in Philadelphia

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Every now and then a game is played that keeps the fans, players, and even the sports reporters on the edge of their seats, and anyone with Mets tickets to last night’s game against the Phillies was able to see one of those games first hand – though for Mets fans, it probably wasn’t the type of game they would want to repeat too often.

After a very strong start, the Mets took a 10-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, when Philadelphia began what was almost the biggest comeback of the season. Giving up homeruns to Pat Burrell, Ryan Howard, and Geoff Jenkins – in addition to an RBI double by Shane Victorino the Mets began to see the game slipping away as the Phillies eventually scored in the bottom of the 9th to come within a run at 10-9.

Despite giving up two runs with two outs in the 9th inning, Mets veteran closer, Billy Wagner limped out with his 20th save of the year, while barely preserving the win for the Mets.

Another notable event was that Phillies 2nd baseman, Chase Utley hit his 25th homerun of the year in the 4th inning. He leads the Majors in that category.

As the all-star break approaches, the NL East is one of the most exciting races in baseball. The Phillies lead the division at 48-42, with the Florida Marlins and Mets within 2.5 games.

Yankees Split Weekend Series with Sox in the Bronx

Monday, July 7th, 2008

After losing the first two games of the weekend series against the arch-rival Red Sox, the Yankees rebounded with two one-run victories to close out the first series against Boston since mid-April.

In game three, the Yankees held on to take the win 2-1 as veteran Mike Mussina out dueled Boston’s young Justin Masterson, while Mariano Rivera closed the game out with his 23rd save of the season. In a game in which each team only garnered six hits each, it was timely hitting by the Yankees that ultimately made the difference.

In yesterday’s series finale, it took 10 innings for the Yankees to edge the Red Sox 5-4. In a game where Joba Chamberlain and Tim Wakefield were ultimately non-factors, it was the closers for both teams who were involved in the decision. For New York, Mariano Rivera garnered his third win of the season, while Boston’s star closer, Jonathan Papelbon took this loss for his third of the year. Timely hitting, again made the difference as Brett Gardner made the game winning hit, a single up the middle, with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Currently the Yankees stand nine games out of the division lead as the Tampa Bay Rays continue their improbable run at the top of the AL East. The Red Sox are in second place in the division, five games behind the Rays.

As we continue to approach the final game ever at Yankee Stadium, NY Yankee Tickets will continue to be hot commodities, and even more so as the division heats up heading into the All-Star break.

Who’s Most Popular on Broadway Katie Holmes or Nicole Kidman?

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

The media is buzzing with gossip over Katie Holmes’ debut on Broadway. Holmes is appearing (fully clothed) in the Broadway play All My Sons on October 16th. This is measured by advance ticket sales. So far less than a million tickets have been sold to the show. Kidman sold $4 million tickets.

Also, prices are not as high. Tickets to see Holmes are getting about $300 a ticket while Kidman’s show got as much as $700 a ticket for The Blue Room which opened in 1998. Rather than blue, Holmes is probably seeing red right now. The leading ladies share something in common though. Holmes is, of course Tom Cruise’s current wife, and Kidman his former.

Also, times were different when Kidman was married to Cruise. His popularity was higher then. They were also starring together in the controversial film Eyes Wide Shut which featured some risque scenes between real life husband and wife. Those were good times. Also consider that a tickets to a Broadway play just aren’t drawing the type of prices they used to.

It’s brave for Holmes to step into this territory at this point. Some blame Cruise for dooming this opening night before it even begins. And as we can see, the media is not going to be easy on either one of them.

New York Mets Lose Monday Night’s Game

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Did you catch last nights Mets game? If you did, and you’re a Mets fan, you’re not feeling too celebratory ahead of this weekend’s holiday. While they did win Sunday’s game, Monday they were looking tired.

The New York Times described it this way:

“Shoddy fielding, a slumbering offense and poor pitching, stalwarts of the first 81 games, reappeared as the Mets opened the second half of their season with a 7-1 loss at Busch Stadium. With their lineup struggling as it is, their margin for error is minimal. Committing three errors and giving up runs in each of the first five innings, then, is no way to go ahead and ease the pressure.”

Interim Mets manager Jerry Manuel put it even more starkly: “We didn’t do too much defensively, we didn’t do too much offensively, we didn’t do too much in the manager’s seat, we didn’t do too much in the coaches’ seat, we didn’t do too much of anything tonight,” Manuel said. Pitcher Oliver Perez has proved to be on again, off again and this game it was off.

Defense was poor and the Mets lost to the Cardinals 7-1. Tomorrow is a new day: next up the Mets play the St. Louis Cardinals again at Busch Stadium.
