Phillies Steal Game, Division Lead with Six Run Ninth
“Wow!” was undoubtedly the most common word uttered after last night’s Mets game, in which the Philly’s found a way to win – and regain the division lead – with a six-run ninth inning. After mounting a 5-2 lead going into the final inning, Mets fans had to feel confident in their bullpen to close the game out and maintain the team’s lead in the National League East. However, the Phillies had other plans as they mounted one of the best come back of the year to take the game 8-6.
A small rally in the ninth wasn’t enough to regain the lead for Mets as they mounted one run in the home half of the inning. If there was a star in this game, it was Shane Victorino whose 2-4 performance included a home run in the 6th inning that help the Phillies stay alive in the final innings.
A game like this only reiterates the notion that the National League East is going to go down to the wire this year as we are looking at what could one of the most parity-filled years in memory. There’s definitely a lot of baseball left, and it could easily come down to the final week for four of the six Major League divisions.
