Phantom of the Opera Celebrates 20 Years!
The Phantom of the Opera is celebrating 20 years. It’s the longest running Broadway show in history. It’s been so successful that its worldwide box office over the past 20 years out-grossed the highest grossing film in history, Titanic. Phantom has grossed over $675 million and that also puts it at number one. Internationally that number goes to over $5 billion.
People see Phantom again and again, and most see the production in New York. 12.5 million of us have bought tickets to Phantom. It’s a classic that’s almost become synonymous with New York and Broadway. It sells out all over the country with its haunting story and music. The Phantom of the Opera won seven 1988 Tony Awards including Best Musical.
The show is based on the classic novel “Le Fantôme de L’Opéra” by Gaston Leroux, a wildly popular novel that sold out several times. The current cast of The Phantom of the Opera includes Howard McGillin in the tile role of the Phantom. Jennifer Hope Wills is Christine and Tim Martin Gleason plays Raoul. McGillin has performed the role of the Phantom more than any other actor in the Broadway production. He’s played it over 2,000 times.
It’s playing at the Majestic Theatre in New York City, (between Broadway & 8th Ave).
